    3. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicle's Files, April 20, 2003. Compiled each week by Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, April 20, 1983 A review of the site plan for a new Calvary Baptist Church in the Columbia View area of The Dalles is on the agenda for the planning commission when it meets Thursday night at city hall. The church plans to build on property at the intersection of Columbia View Drive and Wasco Drive but no tentative dates have been set for the start of construction and the building design for the new church has not been set yet, Jack Howe, a church spokesman said. 40 Years Ago, April 20, 1963 The Dalles strengthened its hold on first place in the Western Division of Intermountain League play Friday with a day-night double-deader win over hosting Redmond (Oregon). The Indians (The Dalles), behind the five hit pitching of Mark Jensen, won the opener 9-6 and then came back in the second game with a 3-2 victory on another five hitter, this one thrown by veteran ace Paul Duus. Both Jensen and Duus remained undefeated. The Dalles Country Club fairways were windy and cold Friday afternoon but that seemed to have little effect on Prineville's (Oregon) number one prep golfer, Allen Hudspeth. The veteran senior carded a 37-40-77 in IML play here yesterday, a full ten strokes better than his nearest competitor, a teammate. John Miller was installed as the new president of the Senior High PTA at the Thursday evening meeting of the group. Others seated were Richard White, vice-president; Mrs. Dale Fallon, secretary; and Mrs. Don Spencer, treasurer. 60 Years Ago, April 20, 1943 Members of the Townsend Club, No. 1 met Saturday evening at the Arcadian Hall in regular session with Walter Ryan presiding. It was voted to help Alf Wernmark with a program to be given at the Eastern Oregon Tuberculosis Hospital on the evening on May 5. 80 Years Ago, April 20, 1923 As a result of the findings of the circuit court in the adjudication of water rights in Wasco County, records compiled by T. Leland Brown, district water master, show that there are now in access of 10,087 acres in the county under irrigation. Direct bus service between The Dalles and Portland will be inaugurated Sunday by the Jayloff bus company of Portland as a result of a deal completed by A.J. Jayloff of Portland, who purchased the line operating between The Dalles and Hood River (Oregon) from Bruce Stranahan of Hood River. Frank A. Viles and C.W. McMahon, both well known business men of this city will open a new drug store on or about May 1 in the building formerly occupied by Mack's Place on Second Street according to an announcement by McMahon this morning. A complete line of drugs, cigars and cigarettes and a first class soda fountain service will be installed, it was stated. 100 Years Ago, April 20, 1903 After all we bid fare to have baseball teams galore. For some time the Wasco Warehouse team has been organized and also the Boys Club team and Saturday night the original Dalles nine reorganized. The latter are prepared to take up all challenges and outside teams that desire games should address Robert Murray. Four small boys, among whom were Guy Jones and Tom McNeal, who were watching the baseball game yesterday afternoon, ventured too near to home base and were taught a lesson. One of the players tossed a bat aside, striking the lads and knocking Tom senseless for a time and cutting a large gash in Guy Jones' head, which it required three stitches to mend. They were brought home and are today little the worse for wear.
