The Dalles Chronicle April 11, 2003. Looking Back is researched by Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, April 13, 1983 Five local restaurants are participating in a program sponsored by the Oregon Wheat League by serving the "True Oregon Cake" to their customers from April 19 through April 23 to correspond with the Cherry Festival. The restaurants are the Dobre Deli, Tapadera, Portage Inn, the French House and Ole's Supper Club. 40 Years Ago, April 13, 1963 Club objectives and projects were discussed at an organizational meeting of the Wasco County Teenage Republican Club held at the home of Mrs. Phillip Dougherty. High school students in attendance expressed an interest in learning more about the objectives of each of the two major political parties and in discussing matters related to taxation and other current legislative proposals. Linda Combs, junior at Arlington (Oregon) High School, was recently chosen to attend Girls State this year on the Willamette University campus. Linda was chosen for scholarship, personality and the activities in which she participates. The hosting Arlington (Oregon) Honkers of Don Rich won the third annual Arlington Invitational track meet and 14 Mid-Columbia A-2 and B schools entered and five new meet records. High point man of the day was Dave Jensen of Cascade Locks (Oregon) who took firsts in the javelin and shot put and a third in the discus. 60 Years Ago, April 13, 1943 Bertha Sparling was called into the justice court of Judge Glenn O. Allen yesterday on complaint of Harry E. Walther that she was allowing 10 goats to roam at large in the Cherry Height area, where she resides and keeps the goats. She was fined $25 by the court, but the sentence was suspended to give her time eighter to pen the goats or dispose of some of them. Among the five judges of the contest for junior weekend queen on the campus of the University of Oregon at Eugene is Roger Dick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank G. Dick of The Dalles. 80 Years Ago, April 13, 1923 P.W. Marx, county roadmaster, and J.W. Hix and L.B. Kelly, county commissioners, returned last night from an inspection trip in the Antelope (Oregon) district. The rains of last week and the heavy traffic on the roads made the travel a little rough, Marx stated. All road construction work in the district is going along smoothly it was reported. A.E. Gronewald, county school superintendent. and Burr E. Tatro of the high school faculty, will attend the community meeting to be held in Friend (Oregon) tonight in the interest of the proposed Dufur (Oregon) union high school. Gronewald and Tatro will outline the proposed system and state the benefits that would be derived. 100 Years Ago, April 13, 1903 Wasco county has a new post office called Friend, to be supplied by special service from Kingsley (Oregon). Theodore Bushkuhl has been appointed post master. We understand that The Dalles is to lose her O.R. & N. agent and that if you want to go to "Ireland" you soon will have to go to Goldendale, (Washington) as James Ireland has accepted the position as agent for the new railroad at that place. No doubt the O.R. & N. dislike to depart with so trustworthy an agent as Mr. Ireland has proven himself in the years he has served them, and we can truthfully say we will regret to lose him and his excellent wife. Whitman college again won the intercollegiate debate with Washington Agricultural College at Pullman (Washington) and we notice that a Dalles young man was a leader in the winning side in the person of E.D. Baldwin.
