    3. The Dalles Optimist Friday, January 7, 1944 page two Tygh Ridge Boy Leaves for Camp Harold Bohlender left New Years day for his camp after spending his furlough with his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Louie Schrieber and children of Friend [Oregon] and Aaron Easton were dinner guests at the Garfield Easton home on New Years day. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gardner were callers at the George Bourland home Sunday. Local residents shopping in The Dalles Monday included Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gardner, Mr. and Mrs. Garfield Easton, John Godknecht, Mr. and Mrs. Ned Underhill, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hulse and Mrs. Mary Hulse. Those who attended the dance at Tygh Valley New Year’s eve from this vicinity were Mr. and Mrs. Frank May, Stanley Hillgen, Miss Genevieve Hillgen, Francis Hillgen and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gardner. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Busch and daughter, Dorothy, came from Sisters [Oregon] Friday evening to spend New Years with Mr. and Mrs. George Bourland. Mr. Busch left Sunday for his work at Sisters but Mrs. Busch and daughter are staying at the Bourlands for a while. Leland Hendricks went to Portland last week to be with his wife who has been there taking care of her mother. Clarence Gardner took two loads of stock to Portland Tuesday night and Wednesday for Garfield Hudson and Garfield Easton. Jim Hunt took a load of hogs to Portland Tuesday for Jim Underhill. Lodge at Tygh Has Xmas Party Tygh Valley – Tuesday evening of last week the local Rebekahs held their annual Christmas party, beginning with an 8:30 pot luck supper after which games and contests were the amusement of the evening. One feature which held fun and excitement for the group was the sale of :white elephants” which were donated by Rebekahs and friends. A beautifully decorated Christmas tree graced one side of the lodge room and gifts were exchanged by the members and their guests. Mrs. Howard Conley left last week for San Francisco [California] where she will visit her son, Tommy Gibson, who has been transferred from Corpus Christi, Texas, to the west coast. Miss Barbara Crabtree accompanied the Misses Henrietta and Evelyn Peetz to Portland last week where she visited relatives for several days. Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Dodd returned Sunday from Portland where they spent their Christmas vacation visiting with relatives. DIES AT YAKIMA Word was received here Friday of the death of Mrs. Emma N. Chastain at the home of her son, Frank, at Yakima [Washington]. Mrs. Chastain, who made her home here for a number of years before going to Yakima, has many relatives and friends in this and the Wamic [Oregon] community to mourn her passing. Mrs. Frank Bayer, Jr. and daughter, Julia Catherine, of Grass Valley [Oregon] accompanied the Willis Brittain family home Tuesday of last week and spent several days visiting here. Mr. and Mrs. William Aldridge of Wamic visited here a short time Wednesday at the Willis Norval home. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Jones of Klamath Falls [Oregon] and Mrs. Esther Jones of Madras [Oregon] arrived here on Thursday evening and spent two days visiting at the home of Mrs. Norman Jones’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Miller. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hauser were dinner guests Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Muller at Wamic. Mrs. Callie Bigbee returned from Portland Sunday to take up her duties as teacher in the local school. H. L. Morris was a business caller in The Dalles Saturday. Willis Brittain was employed at the Sam Stark ranch Thursday and Friday of last week. Mrs. C.W. Booth and son, James went to The Dalles last week to meet Mrs. Booth’s mother, Mrs. Alvia Crone, of Highwood, Montana, who spent several days visiting the Booth family at their home on the Flat. Ralph Delco of Wamic was a business caller here Monday morning. Mrs. Monica Muller left this week for Long Beach, California, where she expects to spend the remainder of the winter. Mr. and Mrs. L.P. Chastain and Leonard Chastain of Harper, Oregon, arrived here Sunday evening to attend funeral services for Mrs. Emma Chastain, held at Maupin Tuesday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. L.O. Wing left Tuesday for Portland where they will spend the remainder of the winter. Mr. Wing will be employed there. Mr. and Mrs. E.S. Baxter, who have been in Portland the past few months, returned to their home here Sunday.
