The announcement came at a special meeting of the Antelope City Council held in the basement of the Antelope School House. Karuna read her letter of resignation to a large crowd which included resident followers of the Indian mystic Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, longtime Antelope residents, local ranchers and media representatives. Dan Conner is valedictorian and Suzanne Kincaid salutatorian for Sherman Union High School. Conner has a grade point average of 3.69. Kincaid has a grade point average of 3.47 40 Years Ago, June 1, 1963 Construction of the new privately sponsored nursing home on the northwest side of Mill Creek, beyond Erickson's Addition, [Evergreen] is expected to start about July 1. L. Dean Torkelson of Hermiston (Oregon) told the Chronicle Friday the project which in its first phase may entail an investment of some $300,000 is definitely in the "go" stage with "all commercial financing" confirmed. Torkelson, who is in partnership with Dr. Milton L. Johnson in operation of a nursing home in Hermiston, said the initial X shaped frame building will be constructed on about two acres of the site that includes close to six acres. 60 Years Ago, June 1, 1943 Carl G. Thompson of Rufus (Oregon) this week advertised his cattle and dairy equipment for sale, making a total of a half dozen dairymen locally and in surrounding districts to forsake dairying for more lucrative employment. "Higher costs and lower profits" have been given as the reason in the majority of cases. 80 Years Ago, June 1, 1923 Wasco County road bonds commanded a premium today when $200,000 of the $800,000 issue voted for the construction of The Dalles - California highway were sold to Farris and Hardgrove and Stearns Brothers and Company, Spokane (Washington) firms, bidding jointly. Bids were opened at the local courthouse. A total of $200,620 was paid by the Spokane firms for the issue. The baccalaureate sermon for the seniors who are graduating this year at The Dalles High School will be given by Reverend John L. Bogue Sunday evening at 8 o'clock at the high school auditorium it was announced by Paul K. Abrahamson, principal today. The following officers have been elected to preside over the freshman class of the local high school for the ensuing year: Marion Sexton, president; Walter Marx, vice-resident; Jacquetta Moorhead, secreatry; Donald McGowan, treasurer; George Stadelman, board of control; Fred Lemke, sergeant-at-arms. 100 Years Ago, June 1, 1903 Bids for supplying school district No. 12 with wood for the coming year were opened at the meeting of the board Friday night. The contract for 50 cords of slab wood at the high school and 15 cords of fir for the East Hill primary were let to J.T. Peters, the former at $2.75 a cord and the latter at $3.90. The remainder of the wood will be furnished by Nat Garman at $3.75 a cord. William Glasius was re-elected janitor. J.A. McArthur of the Wasco Warehouse Milling Company was interviewing some of Dufur's (Oregon) businessmen yesterday with a view to installing a substation at Dufur and furnishing the Dufur people with chained lightening. The proposition is to put in sixteen candle lights at the rate of 75 cents each in lots of three, or $1 per light when single lights are used. The company will also furnish power for mechanical purposes if desired.
