The Dalles Chronicle June 1, 2003 HISTORY MYSTERY PHOTO (Text Only) John Lundell, Eldon Wagenblast and Jane Rolfe all knew our star attraction last week in the photo was Bessie, or "Old Bess", a Percheron that hauled freight for American Express for eight years, starting in 1916. Jane Rolfe of Grass Valley (Oregon) said her uncle, Fred Wegener, was the driver, and that Bessie, who was very popular with the citizens of The Dalles, was so proficient, she often made the right stops without being told. John Lundell said when foot trouble necessitated her reitrement, former Congressman Malcolm A. Moody bought her from the freight company and she retired to his comfortable farm, where she received the best of care.
