Reed Sr., 69, of Boise, (Ada Co.) Idaho, died of a massive heart attack on October 13, 2001. He was born in Hood River, (Hood River Co.) on June 21, 1932, to MIldred Pomeroy Reed Sunderland and Paul Ralston Reed. He attended grade school in Hood River and Newport, and graduated from Newport High School (Lincoln Co., OR) in 1950. During high school, he was active in football, basketball and basebal, and was student body president his senior year. The year after graduation, he helped his mother and stepfather, Paul Sunderland, establish a dairy farm in Turner. He obtained his bachelor's degree in agricultural economics from Oregon State University, Corvallis, in 1955. He spent two years in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Benning, GA., and Camp Otsu, Japan. He was trained as a ranger and attained the rank of first lieutenant. He remained in the Army Reserve and retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1992, and served in the selective service department. He was employed by Travelers Insurance Company as a farm and ranch appraiser in 1958 until his retirement in 1989 as vice-president in the real estate investment department. He enjoyed traveling to appraise farms and ranches in Oregon, Washington, Nevada and Idaho. He was involved in the development of agriculture in the Snake River Valley and surrounding areas. He was president of the Caldwell Swim Team. After retirement, he was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and the Idaho Elks Rehabilitation Center. He enjoyed entertaining, reading, tennis, fishing, hunting, and racquetball. He was a fan of the Yankees, Oregon State University Beavers, and Green Bay Packers sports teams. Survivors include his wife, Betty; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and John DeMeyer of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; son and daughter-in-law, Don Jr. and Marcia Reed of Portland; two stepsons; a stepdaughter; a sister Shirley McDermott of Dundee; grandchildren Ruby and Sam Reed of Portland; five step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. His first wife is Evellyn Allen Reed of Canby. He was preceded in death in 1981 by a daughter, Diane "Mitzi" Reed. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. October 25 at Boon Memorial Presbyterian Church 14th and Dearborn, Caldwell, Idaho. Arrangements are under the direction of Dakan Funeral Chapel of Caldwell. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial conributions be made to the American Red Cross, Disabled American Veterans or a chosen charity.
