The Dalles Chronicle January 19, 2003 20 Years Ago, January 19, 1983 Thursday will be an important day for Kelli Bray, The Dalles Area Junior Miss in her quest for the title of Oregon Junior Miss. Kelli and other constants will have their interview with the judges at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Above average water yields are expected for the rest of 1983, according to measurements taken in the city watershed on January 13, Bill Keyser, director of the department of water supply and treatment, said the rain and snow accumulations at the High Prairie Snow Court on that date showed an average snow depth of 86.78 inches with a water content of 31.64 inches and an average density of 36 percent. He said the average precipitation for the entire year at the 6,100 foot elevation is 40 inches. 40 Years Ago, January 19, 1963 At the annual meeting of the First Congregational Church last Sunday, Dr. John M. Campbell was re-elected as moderator. Serving with him in 1963 will be J.W. Tindall, clerk; James M. Beer, treasurer; Elvera Myers, financial secretary; John Thompson, Sunday School superintendent; Mrs. Lawrence Evans, assistant Sunday School superintendent. Construction of a large freezer room and holding cooler is underway in preparation for the re-opening February 1 of the Grandview Market, 2301 E. 10th Street. Leonard Huston and his son, Harold (Bud) Huston have returned here and will open the business under the name of Huston's Grandview Market. 60 Years Ago, January 19, 1943 The first ice seen in the Columbia River at The Dalles this winter put in an appearance last night, most of it pouring into this waterway from the John Day, it was reported by rivermen this morning. The Upper River tugboat, "Megler", which sank at the edge of the Washington shore in the big wind storm Friday, was raised yesterday by a derrick from Portland, sumped out, temporarily reconditioned, and then proceeded under its own power from The Dalles to Portland, where today it is in dock undergoing repairs. The "March of Dollars and Dimes" was set moving at a meeting held at The Dalles last night by Mr. and Mrs. Willis Darnielle, Alf E. Wernmark, Lay A. Carlisle, Maynard Culver, Lee E. Johnson and Joseph H. Steers. Carlisle reported $363.90 in the treasury from a year ago, of which $99.46 was a refund from the national committee in New York. 80 Years Ago, January 19, 1923 Recent examinations of local vineyards made by Professor H. Hartman of Oregon Agricultural college, in conjunctions with local horticulturists, disclosed that this district is free from grapevine diseases. Accordingly, the chamber horticultural bureau has made arrangements to propagate at least 25,000 vines, from cuttings taken locally during the present year, W.N. Nelson said today. The cuttings will be propagated by the Milton Nursery company. 100 Years Ago, January 19, 1903 Flags have been at half mast throughout the city today in respect to the memory of our late congressman Thomas H. Tongue, whose body passed through the city on No. 5 this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock on the way to his late home at Hillsboro (Oregon), where the funeral will take place. A special car was occupied by a son and daughter of the deceased, Miss Ruan and the escort, headed by Representative Moody.
