The Dalles Chronicle January 5, 2003 Compiled by Elroy King 20 Years Ago, January 5, 1983 Ground searchers worked through the night and helicopters took to the air for a second day today in hopes of finding a twin-engine plane that went down in the Columbia River Gorge with five people aboard. Skamania County (Washington) Sheriff Bill Closner ordered an all night search in the event any of the passengers survived the Monday night crash. Strong signals from the aircraft's locator transmitter prompted searches to focus the search on an area north of Augsburger Mountain in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The airplane was on a flight from Portland to Idaho Falls, Idaho. The Dalles Chamber of Commerce Tourism Development Committee will contract for an inventory of historic sites in the city.
