The Dalles Chronicle January 12, 2003 (Text Only) Last week's photo was a stumper for most folks, and we got guesses from Lyle (Washington) to White River (Washington) to the Deschutes (Oregon) to Biggs (Oregon). The lone correct answer came from Jo Ann Wixon of The Dalles, who e-mailed, "I can't help but respond to this weeks mystery photo, which is Mitchell Point (Hood River county, Oregon)...more specifically my Grandmother, Elsie Tenney and her dog Klondike! Do I get extra points for knowing the dogs name?" We're happy to throw in extra points for nifty details like that. Mike Tenney, who supplied the photo, added this background: "Elsie E. "Babe" Tenney (along with her dog Klondike) ran the Texaco station, lunch counter, tourist court and the hunting lodge in the upper right from about 1932 until her death in 1944. Former President Theodore Roosevelt used to hunt elk up over the mountain behind as a guest of the lodge, which had a split-log staircase and was like a miniature Timberline (Lodge), Mt. Hood) It burned to the ground in the early 1960s."
