    3. The Dalles Chronicle January 12, 2003 Compiled by Elroy King of the Chronicle staff. 40 Years Ago, January 12, 1963 The first training session in a series for community leaders in the Civil Defense program will be held February 6 it was announced this week. It will be a medical self help class, under direction of Dr. E.E. Berg, medical officer of the Wasco-Sherman Public Health Department and will consist of six three-hour sessions on consecutive Wednesdays. Unless winter storms produce a good supply of snow in coming weeks irrigation water supplies from streams may be deficient this year in the Hood River-Wasco County area. The snowpack as of January 1 was one of the poorest ever measured, according to W.T. Frost, snow survey supervisor for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service, cooperating with Oregon State University and state engineers. The Redskins of Maupin (Oregon) opened their Deschutes League play last night with a 43-29 win over hosting Dufur (Oregon). Lawrence Peetz led the victors in scoring and rebounds with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Rick Cantrell was high for Dufur with 10. 60 Years Ago, January 12, 1943 Presented with a gigantic key to Dalles City (only one of several names city has been known as) by Mayor George P. Stadelman, as the Union Pacific streamliner City of Portland steamed into The Dalles station on time at 7:55 this morning Captain Marion Carl and his bride received the acclaim of some two hundred citizens of this city gathering on the depot platforms. Handshaking and not a few kisses for the bride from Brooklyn became the order of the moment. (Note: Captain Carl was Oregon's war ace as mentioned in a previous account.) 80 Years Ago, January 12, 1923 Fourteen candidates were initiated into The Dalles Lodge of Elks at last nights meeting. The names were Clarence Lamborn, Frank Callaghan, W.F. Doak, J.S. Miller, C.A. Harth, C.F. Emerson, John McLeod, Walter Ross, G.W. Sickafoose, R.W. Breyman, J.J. Van Dellen, J.P. Rath, John Milne, Harry W. Dodge. J.B. Kilmore was made a member of The Dalles Lodge by demit from Astoria (Oregon) Lodge No. 180. The annual meeting of the directors and officers of the Wasco county bank was held last night. All of the old members of the board were reelected and the only changes in the list of officers was in the addition of Jess L. Sexton as assistand cashier. The officers of the bank are as follows: George C. Blakeley, president; T.H. West, vice-president; E.E. Fitzwater, cashier; H.W. Scherrer and Jess L. Sexton assistant cashiers. The directors are George C. Blakeley, J.Park Bolton, Dr. H.C. Dodds, C.A. Tonn, George Webb and T.H. West. 100 Years Ago, January 12, 1903 As will be noted by an announcement in another column, H.C. Liebe has been appointed watch inspector for the O.R. & N. (Oregon Railroad & Navigation) Company. This will no doubt meet with the approval of the railroad boys, many of whom are accustomed to frequenting Harry's place of business and have great faith in him as a workman. John M. Parry has been appointed as postmaster at Moro (Oregon) in Sherman County.
