    3. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicle’s Files Sunday, November 30, 2003 20 Years Ago, November 30, 1983 While the short term condition of the aluminum industry is vigorous, accelerating power costs project an unstable future the president of Martin Marietta Aluminum said today. David C. Dressler said that while the plants were running at 90 percent capacity now, the future held a different condition depending on power costs and world markets. Dressler was asked to comment on the occasion of the 25th year of manufacturing aluminum in The Dalles. Installation of James J. Hogue as worshipful master of Wasco Lodge No. 15 will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 4 at the Masonic Temple and other elective and appointive officers will be installed. Most bowlers may bowl a lifetime and never come close to picking up the 7-10 split. But 13 year-old Toni McCollum has her 7-10 conversion out of the way already. Toni, an eighth grader at The Dalles Junior High, picked up the hardest to get split last Saturday during Ed’s McMuffin (Junior and Senior) league play at Recreation Lanes. 40 Years Ago, November 30, 1963 Assault and battery warrants have been drawn against three unidentified men who signaled a car to stop on The Dalles-California Highway three miles north of Dufur (Oregon) and administered a beating to a Portland couple, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Jeffers, formerly of The Dalles. Five old slot machines turned over to county authorities by a man in the Dufur area, who found them in a house he had purchased, were destroyed this week. Hauled to the city dump, the machines were broken and then for good measure were run over by a bulldozer to flatten them further. An order signed by Circuit Judge Malcolm W. Wilkinson called for the destruction of the machines, possession of which is prohibited by statue. Candy Fowler, A Dalles teenager, tied for third in the 50 yard dash in the junior girls midget division at the AAU Junior Olympics track and field meet held last summer, that organization announced today. She ran the sprint in 6.5 seconds. 80 Years Ago, November 30, 1923 Alluring visions of $13,000 reward for the capture of the three DeAutremont brothers, wanted for murder and the robbery of a Southern Pacific train at Siskiyou on October 11, speeded two automobile loads of Wasco County officers to Celilo (Oregon) late Wednesday night. Assurances on the part of C.E. Frye, store proprietor at the village that he had recognized Roy DeAutremont resulted in the flying trip. The officers returned with their hopes smashed and their revolvers smokeless, in absence of an anticipated battle. In a foot ball game marked by spectacular plays, The Dalles High School eleven defeated Albany (Oregon) on Amotan field [The Dalles] yesterday by a score of 18 to 7. By this victory the local school team won an undisputed right to test its mettle against the best Oregon has to offer for state championship honors. The game was featured by an 85-yard run by Quarterback “Pete” Stadelman for a touchdown. 100 Years Ago, November 30, 1903 The James W. Nesmith Post G.A.R. attended the funeral of their late comrade, Andrew Jackson Linton, in a body yesterday afternoon. The services, which were conducted by Reverend W.E. Rossman, were held at the family residence on the East Hill. Deceased, who was a victim of consumption, came from Wyoming to Oregon on account of his health twenty years ago and settled on Ten Mile Creek. He resided there until last summer when with his wife he came to The Dalles. At the time of his death he was 65 years of age.
