    3. Surnames: Short, Coffin, Trujillo, Swofford, Henson, Caldwell, Sherrill Frederick William Short, 63, a resident of The Dalles, died at the local hospital on Friday, January 11, 2002. He was born on October 29, 1938 in Sulphur Bluff, Hopkins County, Texas, to Frederick Jackson and Pearl Elizabeth (Coffin) Short and moved with his family to Oregon at the age of five. He grew up at various towns in Oregon, including Sutherlin, Roseburg and Elkton. As a young man he worked for the U.S. Forest Service fighting forest fires and mapping state parks. Living in Hood River at the age of 19, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served in the Seattle Air Defencse Sector and on Okinawa as a radar specialist. He moved to Pasadena, California in 1963 and studied under Herbert W. Armstrong, founder of Ambassador College, and was baptized in 1964. As a member of the Church of God he served for 36 years along with his wife Eunice, whom he married in Central Point on November 26, 1965. He was an active member of the church's Spokesmen's Club. He was ordained as a deacon in 1999. He moved back to Oregon in 1970 and worked at various trades, including thinning timber for the Bureau of Land Magement, Weyerhaeuser, and the U.S. Forest Service. He was a master carpenter and owned his own custom cabinet shop for 20 years. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and hiking and hand crafted his own bows and arrows. After becoming a father in 1966 he raised six children and seven grandchildren who survive him along with his wife Eunice, The Dalles; sons Frederick W., Raymond S. and Joseph W., Phoenix, Arizona, Richard D. and Jonathan D., The Dalles, and daughter Sarah E. Trujillo, Portland; grandchildren Frederick III, Bethany, Alexandra, Andrew, Devon, Gage, and Pearl; his brother, Floyd, Hood River; and sisters Freeda Swofford, Richland; Martha Henson, Portland; and Gilona Caldwell and Judy Sherrill, Hood River. He was preceded in death by a brother, Friday, 9n 1959. A service in celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 16 at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 1100 Pentland Street in The Dalles. Pastor Don Smythe of the Philadelphia Church of God presiding. Disposition was by cremation, and his ashes will be inurned at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Memorial contributions may be made to the Philadelphia Church of God, P.O. Box 3700, Edmond, Oklahoma 73083. Arrangements were by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
