    3. Surnames: Etcher, Murray, Anderson, Shearer, Albright, Zuercher, Schmid, Jones, Shepard Vance G. Etcher, 70, a former resident of The Dalles, died at his home in Petersburg, Alaska, on September 15, 2002. He was born in Knoxville, Iowa on March 6, 1932. He moved to The Dalles with his mother and father and two sisters in 1945. He started working at logging camps during the summer when he was 16. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1951 and served in the Korean War from August 1951 through August, 1952. He married Shirley Murray in 1951 and they celebrated 51 years of marriage. After being discharged from the Marines in January of 1954 he went back into the logging and construction industry for approximately 20 years. He and his wife moved to Petersburg, Alaska in 1978 where he started logging with a self loading logging truck and skidder and then changed to construction in 1983. He retired about 1996. He enjoyed hunting deer, elk and moose and has a few trophy horns. Survivors include his wife, Shirley; two sisters, Joyce Anderson and her husband and two children in Dufur (Oregon); and Dixie Shearer and her husband and two children; a brother, David Etcher and his two children, both of The Dalles; children, Michael Etcher, Petersburg; Vickie Albright and her husband, Yakutat, Alaska; and Cindy Zuercher and her husband and two children, Whitney and Kyle, Hood River (Oregon), grandsons, Michael Sean Etcher of Elma, Washington; Joshua Etcher, Petersburg; and Christopher Schmid, Reno, Nevada; two step-granddaughters, Debbie Jones and her husband and son, and Loretta Albright, Monroe, Washington; and one step-grandson, Darrell Albright and his wife and four children, Everett, Washington; and great-grandson and various nieces and nephews. A sister, Judy Shepard, preceded him in death in 1988. Memorials may be made in his name to the Petersburg Fire Dept. EMS and EMTS, Petersburg, Alaska 99833. A memorial service will be held for friends and family at St. Peter's Parish, 1111 Cherry Heights Road, in the Dalles, 2 p.m., Saturday, September 28. The Dalles Chronicle September 24, 2002.
