    3. Transcriber's Note: I've refrained from copying articles that do not include names of residents, some of the colloquial terms we'll have to guess at the meaning of, present day capitals used on certain words were not used then. Fraternity names and organizations I am not familiar with. Advertisements placed in the newspaper were coded for easy identification in later issues. The Dalles Daily Chronicle, Monday, December 15, 1890, LOCAL BREVITIES page 3 Mr. C.E. Bayard left Portland for Eastern Oregon Friday to examine into the matter of Indian depredations. He will be occupied there a month and will then go to Astoria (Oregon). The funeral of the late Leslie James, who was killed in a railroad collision near the John Day (river), Thursday night, took place from the residence of Mr. Frank Egan, yesterday. Mr. Jack Britten is in the city for a brief visit. He tells us most of the former emplyees here who are now at Albina (Oregon), would gladly return, much preferring The Dalles to the present location. Reverend A. Lambert is giving a mission at St. Peter's church, commencing yesterday morning, and will conclude next Sunday. All Catholics and others are cordially invited to attend. The will is dated April 8th, 1886, is witnessed by William Wiley and by its provisions $500 are left to St. Peter's church to be used in building a new church; $500 to the St. Mary's academy, and $500 to the First Congregational church, the testator stating that this bequest was made through his esteem for the founder of the church, the Reverend Thomas J. Condon. It also provides for Edward J. Handley, his son who died two years ago. All other property is left to his widow for life, to revert to Edward J. Handley at her death. Mrs. Kate Handley, George Liebe and J.W. French are appointed executors without bonds. ---------------------------- Dead in the Saddle A special from Payson, U.T. (Utah Territory?) says John Bolton accidently killed himself while going horseback from Payson to Salem (Oregon). In the middle of the forenoon he left town to visit his sister in Salem, taking with him a double-barreled shotgun, with which he shot himself. He was found on horseback with half the right side of his head blown off. He was sitting in the saddle leaning his head over the horses neck. Apparently the horse had not moved since the gun exploded. It is believed that he had been dead in the saddle two hours. Cor (correspondent or contributor) San Francisco (California) Chronicle.
