    3. Surnames: Weir, Alt Christians, Schalk, Bean Catherine "Alta" Weir, 87, a resident of Hood River (Oregon), died at her residence on August 28, 2002. She was born May 16, 1915, in Astoria (Oregon), the first of five children born to John F. and Irene Alt Christians. She grew up in Astoria and attended school there, graduating from Astoria High School in 1933. She then moved to Portland and lived with an aunt and uncle while attending business college, and after that moved back to Astoria and went to work for a dairy. She married Leonard F. Schalk on October 16, 1938. They were active members of the community especially the Clatsop County Historical Society. She taught history at the Clatsop Community College, hosted a radio program and was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. Her husband died in 1958 and soon after that she went to work and worked for the YMCA and later Cox Cablevision. She married Thomas M. Weir in 1966 and they moved to Trail, B.C. (British Columbia, Canada) where she lived for the next 34 years. After her husband died in October 2000 she moved back the "states" and lived at Flagstone Assisted Living in The Dalles and a year later became the first resident of Hawk's Ridge Assisted Living in Hood River, which allowed her to be closer to her son and family. She is survived by her sons, Eldon Schalk and his wife, Sharon, White Salmon (Washington); and Steve Schalk and his wife, Patricia, Fresno, California; a granddaughter, Judy Bean and her husband, Kevin, Vancouver; grandsons, Eldon "Lenny" Schalk and his wife, Kim, White Salmon; Thomas Schalk, Salem (Oregon) Bradley Schalk and his wife, Elizabeth, Vancouver; Wesley Schalk and his wife, Kristin, Vancouver; and Chris Schalk and his wife, Staci, Fresno (California); and 11 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Ted, two husbands, and granddaughter, Laurie and a great-grandson, Kody. Services were held at Anderson Tribute Center in Hood river. Private interment was at Greenwood Cemetery in Astoria. Memorials may be made to the Clatsop County Historical Society, c/o Anderson Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont, Hood River, Oregon 97031.
