Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicles Files May 16, 2004 20 Years Ago, May 16, 1984 Mayor John Lundell of The Dalles today held a 37-vote lead for the Republican nomination to the state legislature from House District 56. Unofficial but complete returns from the five country [sic] district gave Lundell 3063 and Swyers had 3025. Lundell carried Wasco and Sherman counties, Swyers carried Hood River, Gilliam and Wheeler counties. Gene Sugg has been promoted to director of advertising for THE DALLES CHRONICLE-COLUMBIA WEEK effective today, Steve Bennett, publisher of the newspaper announced. Sugg was in sales 13 years before joining THE CHRONICLE-COLUMBIA WEEK this year. He succeeds Mark Williamson, who has joined Ray Schultens Motors in sales, advertising, community and public relations. Rufus [Oregon] Mike Beers and partner Dee Pickett of Caldwell, Idaho are the leaders this week in team roping, according to the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association statistics released this week. Beers and Pickett hold a $2,500 lead over Walt Rodman. The pair has won $10,488 this year. 40 Years Ago, May 16, 1964 Wasco County voters, bucking some trends and going along with others, favored Henry Cabot Lodge by a narrow margin in the Republican presidential balloting Friday. The busy day at the polls ended with a photo finish in one of the races for nomination to Port of The Dalles Commission and approval of measures on the nonpartisan ballot. Final outcome of that contest for the four year port commissioner term will remain in doubt until the official abstract is made at the county clerks office. The unofficial tally, with all port district precincts reporting gave Dr. John Zapp 1052 and Calvin Horn 1051. Incumbent Wilbur Kelly is the other candidate, having received 1067. 60 Years Ago, May 16, 1944 Sam Markman of the Marines, who has just seen 21 months of service in the South Pacific area, and his brother, Marvin, of the Army, who has been in the service three months, were fortunate enough to meet recently somewhere in the South Pacific area, according to word received here by their parents. In observance of national music week, the pupils of the Court Street School presented a program at the school assembly held Friday afternoon, May 12. The first grade under the direction of Mrs. Mildred Lundstrom sang a group of songs. Special numbers were Little Bow Wow and Little Meow by Janet Berger and Jean Wray; Climbing by Gailia Collins and Bobbys Nose by Gordon Mee. The first annual Mothers and Daughters banquet of the Girls Athletic Association of The Dalles High School was an event of Saturday, May 13. The speaker of the evening was Dr. S.H. Jameson of the University of Oregon. 80 Years Ago, May 16, 1924 The Girl Reserves of the Y.W.C.A., under the direction of Miss Allie Liebetrau, entertained their mothers with a lawn party at the Y.M. headquarters Wednesday evening, the program consisting of a series of solo and group dances, recitations and songs by the little girls. The first cover spray for coddling moth on apples and pears is due about next Wednesday according to County Agent C.W. Daigh. The spray is necessary now on account of the exceedingly warm weather experienced during the last 10 days. 100 Years Ago, May 16, 1904 Our wholly roller Bradshaw, Schanno, Waldron, Kurtz and Houghton came home yesterday with the fray with Multnomah covered with glory and all stuck up over their victory, having won the contest Saturday night by a score of 942 to 910. For a few hours they held the Felderheimer cup, being the first time any team outside of Portland had held it. Then Multnomah lost to Astoria [Oregon] and the latter carried away the trophy. Our bowlers put up a fine game, surprising themselves with their skill. H.E. McGinn, attorney for Norman Williams, was in the city Saturday on business connected with the murder trail [sic] and left yesterday for Hood River [Oregon] to look over the ground alleged to be the scene of the double murder. Judge McGinn gave it out while here on Thursday that he will file a petition for a change of venue.
