Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicle’s Files April 25, 2004 20 Years Ago, April 25, 1984 The Dalles Liquor Store will move later this year to a new location, only the fourth such move in the 50-year history of the store. Jim Comini, agent for the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, said he has purchased a complex of buildings in the 1000 block of West Sixth Street. The liquor store will occupy the position of the building now occupied by Super on Sixth. Testimony has been completed in the arbitration of legal fees charged to the Northern Wasco County PUD [Public Utilities District] by attorney Stan Heisler and the board of directors is awaiting the result, PUD Board Chairman Milt Skov announced Tuesday. Skov read portions of a letter from Doug Ragen, a Portland attorney hired to represent the PUD during the arbitration process. Twenty three people attended a public forum Tuesday on the proposed creation of a recreation district to serve The Dalles suburban area. County Clerk Sue Proffit told the group that while the county court does have the power to form the district without an election, she expected the court would go through the election process if it got opposition of any kind. 40 Years Ago, April 25, 1964 This year’s delegate from The Dalles High School to the 23rd session of girls state, to be held June 15 to 21 at Willamette University, Salem [Oregon], has been announced. Selected by the sponsoring American Legion Auxiliary to attend the session were, Barbara Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Williams; and Betty Kennedy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Edmiston. 60 Years Ago, April 25, 1944 Al Cox, coach and athletic director at the Oregon College of Education at Monmouth [Oregon] for 14 years, has signed a contract to coach athletics and direct the health and physical eduction departments of The Dalles High School, according to an announcement made today by Superintendent of Schools Paul McCulloch. Cox will take over his duties here at the start of the school year next fall. An investigation into the climatic conditions for the growing of flower bulbs was made in The Dalles yesterday by Clyde Homan, representative of a lawn seed company, and John Weiman, from the state department of agriculture. A final report on the investigation will not be available for some time. Miss Dorothy Godknecht of Boyd [Oregon], sophomore in journalism at the University of Oregon in Eugene [Oregon], was one of 29 students tapped for Phi Theta Upsilon, junior women’s service honorary, at the installation assembly for ASUO officers held last week at McArthur Court. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Godknecht of Boyd. 80 Years Ago, April 25, 1924 A statement upholding the position of Superintendent of Schools Will E. Wiley, in the controversy which has shaken the city school system and resulting in Wiley’s resignation, prepared and signed by every teacher except one in the high school and grade school was made public by the teachers today. The one exception is Burr T. Tatro, the other man referred to by the school board at a meeting Wednesday night, when Wiley’s resignation was submitted and accepted and it was decided finally that Tatro would not be re-elected. 100 Years Ago, April 25, 1904 Arthur Kennedy, formerly of this city and an employee of THE CHRONICLE office, has purchased the PRINEVILLE REVIEW and will assume the duties of chief quill pusher and proprietor. Mr. Kennedy has been lessee of the plant for the past six months.
