The Dalles Chronicle January 2, 2002 By Elroy King of The Chronicle Two men died when they were struck by a pickup that skidded out of control on an icy overpass at Milepost 43 on I-84 Monday night. Dead at the scene were Hector Manuel Virgeon-Orozco, 32, 3344 AGA Road, No.J-8, Hood River (Oregon); and Kevin Ronald Fitzsimmons, 28, Tacoma, (Washington). An Oregon State Police report said the fatal incident involved two accidents. In the first, at 9:27 p.m., Orozco's Nissan eastboung pickup went out of control on icy overpass and veered to the right and hit a side slope and rolled over, coming to rest on its wheels. Orozco was not injured in the initial accident, and another vehicle with two occupants stopped to assist. Fitzsimmons got out of his vehicle and he and Orozco were standing next to the Nissan pickup when a Toyota pickup, operated by Augusten Reyez-Chavez, 26, Aberdeen, Washington also went out of control on the ice. It hit the Nissan pickup and hit the two men, then hit the Nissan pickup and rolled over. Fitzsimmons' body was found under the Toyota pickup. Chavez was taken to the Hood River hospital for treatment of a broken leg and was later taken to a Portland hospital. A passenger in the Toyota, Gabriel Fuentes, 22, had head lacerations and was taken to the Hood River hospital. A second passenger, Rigerberto Reyez, 19, was not injured. The other person in the Fitzsimmons vehicle, Desiree Durand, also of Tacoma, did not get out of that vehicle and was not injured. The OSP report said Chavez consented to having blood and urine samples taken, but at this point there is no reason to believe alcohol was a factor in the accident, the OSP office said.
