    3. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicle's Files May 25, 2003 20 Years Ago, May 25, 1983 The Wasco County court today is meeting with residents of Antelope (Oregon) before making a decision on a request from the Rajneesh Foundation to back a Rajneesh amendment to the state's land use law. The 1983 legislature made the incorporation of a city a land use matter in that incorporations must comply with land use goals, District Attorney Bernie Smith said at a court meeting this morning. Karla Hendrickson and Dennis Anderson were named outstanding students of the year at Wahtonka High School on Tuesday. The award is sponsored by the Wyam Kiwanis Club and the selections are made by the schools faculty, which considers character, citizenship and service. Joe Brabender was just looking to throw strikes and Brad Snodgrass was just looking for something he could hit. Riverside (Oregon) might have as well been looking for a way out as Brabender and Snodgrass, a pair of seniors with two years of state playoffs experience already behind them, led the Wasco County Redsides to an 8-2 victory over the host Pirates in the CBC district 7-A baseball championship in Boardman (Oregon) Tuesday night. 40 Years Ago, May 25, 1963 District 6B champion Maupin (Oregon) bombed Butte Falls 8-2 in the quarterfinals for the state B championship Friday and now plays Adrian (Oregon) at Adrian next Tuesday night. The Redsides gave up two unearned runs in a shaky first inning, but then senior hurler Lawrence Peetz settled down and held the invaders to one hit the rest of the seven inning game. 60 Years Ago, May 25, 1943 Nine youths and girls yesterday purchased season tickets good at the Dalles city natatorium when it opens for the summer months June 1. Purchasers were Hugh Steers, Alice Sawyer, Gretchen Stiefel, Caroline Stiefel, Mary Welty, Shirley Holmes, Leon Martin, Barbara Martin and Gerry Creswell. The thieves who rifled the Maupin (Oregon) drug store, owned and operated by Estel Stovall, druggist, Sunday night, it was reported today stole nine cases of liquor valued at approximately $750, all of which was the property of the Oregon state liquor commission, for which Stovall is the agent at Maupin. Included in the take were cases of such high priced whiskeys as "Johnny Walker" at $4 a bottle, "Old Granddad" and quantities of gin and rum. The robbery was fully investigated yesterday by the Maupin city police, the state police and the Wasco county sheriff's office, but without any apprehension of the criminals. 80 Years Ago, May 25, 1923 What is believed to have been the premature explosion of a dynamite blast yesterday evening resulted fatally to David Arnold of Lyle (Washington) and in serious injuries to Matt Glavin, Portland contractor, and Clarence Smith, an itinerant laborer. The accident occurred about 7 o'clock, a short distance from Lyle when the three were engaged in working on the construction of the north bank highway. United Artisans will hold a national convention in this city September 2,3 and 4 according to an announcement made by L.L. Alden, special representative of the lodge, who is at present here in the interests of the membership of the local assembly. Members of the Boy Scouts organization of The Dalles will leave tonight to the top of the Klickitats, just beyond Goldendale (Washington). The party will be under the leadership of Bruce H. Hull, principal of the East Hill school and will assemble at the Libby, McNeill & Libby at 5 o'clock. A huge bonfire will be built on the mountain at 9 o'clock it was stated. The return trip will be made tomorrow. 100 Years Ago, May 25, 1903 The play of Evangeline was put on the boards at the Armory on May 16 and was entirely satisfactory to the well filled house, yet the promoter, a Mr. Kendall, went off the fresh fields and failed to liquidate his advertising bill. Nine of Oscar Beck's friends surprised him last night by calling at his residence and reminding that they were aware of the fact that he is growing older and has reached the interesting age of 20 yesterday. Though he was greatly surprised, Oscar had the presence of mind to invite them in and they spent the evening at Flinch, refreshments following. The boys and girls who celebrated with Oscar were Ellen McCoy, Raezola Cluff, Loto Kelsey, Cornelia Wilson, Mark Rorick, Hallie Rice, Joe McInerny and Paul McCoy.
