    3. History Mystery Photo The Dalles Chronicle May 18, 2003 [Text Only] Our mystery for last week proved to be a stumper. None of our history sleuths came up with the correct answer. According to the caption on the picture, this depicts a house situated on a mound at Benton and Laughlin streets which was constructed in 1863 of sandstone quarried from a rimrock ledge to the south. It had 10 rooms, each with a fireplace, and Gothic windows. Colonel J.H. Neyce was the original owner, but lost the place due to bankruptcy. A succession of owners followed, including Henry Marlin, Robert Mays, Hugh Frazier, T.M. Gatch, J.O. Mack, J.M. Russell and H.W.Wells. During times when the house was unoccupied, there were tales of mysterious noises and other strange goings-on. The house finally succumbed to fire in 1905 when shingles from a nearby burning house set the roof ablaze. Though it's been gone nearly a century, while it was around, it was known variously as "The Mays Building," "The Old Stone House," "Neyce's Folly," and, of course, "The Haunted House."
