The Dalles Chronicle May 4, 2003 Compiled by Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, May 4, 1983 A fragile bipartisan coalition of Oregon and Washington lawmakers is preparing to introduce a rival piece of legislation to protect the Columbia River Gorge, claiming it will provide more local control and less federal involvement than an earlier bill introduced by Oregon Republican Senator Bob Packwood. Dr. Roger A. Crebbs of George Fox College has been named president pro-tempore at Judson Baptist College (The Dalles) to replace Dr. Robert Anderson who retires from the presidency on June 30. Dr. Crebbs is the chairman of business and economic at George Fox. School District 12 directors Tuesday night completed the first five interviews for a replacement for Superintendent George Yertson who has announced his retirement effective June 30. Board president Ann Bryant said that the board had selected six candidates for interviews, that one has withdrawn and the other five have been interviewed. A total of 33 applied and a screening committee recommended ten for interviews. 40 Years Ago, May 4, 1963 Alice Kaseberg of Wasco (Oregon) and Joe Monohan of Condon (Oregon) are among the 21 4-H Club members chosen to attend the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago next November. Five more youths from Oregon may get to attend if their records impress 4-H judges in Chicago. Miss Kaseberg, a 10-year 4-H members, was chosen for her work in the swine program. A Sherman County grand jury session Thursday and Friday resulted in a first degree murder indictment against Jake C. Gross, 61, of Wasco (Oregon) and a second degree murder charge against Dolphus L. Baker, 53 of Rufus (Oregon). The two men were arraigned before circuit judge E. Howell yesterday afternoon and later transported to the Wasco County jail (The Dalles). Mrs. Ben Koch and Mrs Joe Hillis will meet in the finals of the championship flight of the women's annual Spring Handicap at The Dalles Country Club. Mrs. Koch defeated Mrs. Joe McNaught and Mrs. Hillis defeated Mrs. James Odell in the semifinals. 60 Years Ago, May 4, 1943 Kenneth H. Ferguson, principal of the Whittier junior high school (The Dalles) tendered his resignation to become effective at the end of this school year. He stated that he had been elected principal of the senior high school at Cottage Grove (Oregon), a school of approximately the same enrollment as the local high school. Ferguson came to The Dalles School system from Juneau, Alaska four years since. George S. Grant, Yeoman third class in the U.S. Navy, today was transferred from the Portland office to be first assistant at the naval recruiting substation in The Dalles to M.A. Tague, in charge of The Dalles area. Grant replaces A1 Woods, who after one years service as assistant to Tague, left last Saturday to become an aviation cadet. Miss Shirley Spickerman, popular Dalles soprano who has been attending school in Portland, will be presented in recital at The Dalles high school auditorium on the evening of Saturday, May 15, by Miss Irene Moore of Portland, formerly of The Dalles High School faculty. 80 Years Ago, May 4, 1923 Candidates who leave tomorrow morning to attend the large Shrine ceremonial at Salem (Oregon) over the weekend are as follow: John Milne, L.B. Bolton, Roy Taylor, Ben F. Clouse, Niel McFadden, Duff McAndies and T.B. Phillips. Mrs. Milne and Mrs. Phillips were also to accompany them. Lois Aldrich, the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.N. Aldrich of 414 W. Ninth Street, has received notification from the Portland Chamber of Commerce, Associated Industries Department that she has been awarded the first prize amounting to $15 for the best 500-word essay on Oregon manufacturers. 100 Years Ago, May 4, 1903 Mrs. Henry Snipes, who lives up in the pines back of the city, was a victim of a serious case of ptomaine poison yesterday which came near proving fatal. With some neighbors the Snipes family went picnicking down near Snipes lake yesterday morning. In the picnic lunch was some canned goods, which proved to be a poor diet for Mrs. Snipes and her little daughter were brought home ill, the former seriously so Dr. Geisendorffer was called and gave remedies usual in such cases. Today she is reported out of danger. Among the foolish, unfounded reports in circulation concerning the smallpox situation in Shaniko (Oregon) is one that a clerk in the Edward C. Peace (Pease) store there deceased. There is not a word of truth in the report, the clerks all being in good health, with not a fear of the smallpox, since it is crushed out there.
