Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicle's Files May 11, 2003 researched and assembled by Elroy King 20 Years Ago, May 11, 1983 Brenda Bailey and Steve Sawyer were named the outstanding seniors during the annual scholastic honors awards assembly held at The Dalles High School Wednesday morning. Miss Bailey won the Beta Sigma Phi Plate and Sawyer got the Kiwanis Club award and both seniors won May Barnum Memorial Scholarships. In addition to the top award both of the top seniors were named as Oregon Scholars for the classes of 1983. The Dalles may receive a $75,000 grant from the state to pay for engineering studies on remedies for the slide area. Governor Vic Atiyeh's community relations representative, Bob Montgomery, toured the slide area on Tuesday with City Manager Del Cesar. Montgomery decided to have the state technical people inspect the area next week to determine whether the project qualifies for state assistance. Mark Williamson has been appointed Advertising Director of The Dalles Chronicle-Columbia Week, Steve Bennett, publisher of the newspapers announced today. 40 Years Ago, May 11, 1963 Two Hood River (Oregon) men drowned in a murky Columbia River slough near Rowena (Oregon) Friday night after their skiff capsized as they were tying a line to a wooden pile about 200 feet from shore. The victims, who apparently had intended to go fishing, were Jim Powers, 69, and his son-in-law, Joe Arbuckle, 35. James Kimball of The Dalles today was announced as winner of one of the $200 scholarships awarded in the 17th annual Oregon AFL0CIO scholarship contest. The award was made on the basis of a competitive examination on labor and industrial problems and scholastic achievement. Keith Gallaher and Cliff Piland combined to shoot a 141 and win the blind partners with handicap play Thursday at The Dalles Country Club. Three teams tied for second with 143, including John Re and Fred Yeager, Lane Heisler and Bob Twiss and Hank Maier and Hank Smith. 60 Years Ago, May 11, 1943 Norman W. Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.G. Davis of The Dalles in now at Oklahoma A & M college at Stillwater, Oklahoma for a course of army air force instruction, where he is member of the 90th college training detachment (aircrew). His course, which will last five months, will cover academic courses as well as elementary flying training. Upon his successful completion of the course he will be appointed an avaiation cadet in the A.A.F. The Misses Myrtle Baker and Mildred Baker, known in The Dalles as the Baker twins, are to be graduated Saturday afternoon, May 16, in the 1943 class of the Deaconess school of nursing at the Deaconess hospital in Spokane (Washington). The exercises, which will climax a week of commencement events, will be held at 3 o-clock at the Central Methodist church. A reception for the 31 members of the class and their friends will be held after the exercises. 80 Years Ago, May 11, 1923 The accidental explosion of a box of dynamite caps while he was engaged in blasting holes in the ground for grape planting yesterday, cost Fred E. Evans of Mosier (Oregon) the loss of one eye, deafness in one ear and general body injuries from flying cartridge metal. Evans was at once taken to The Dalles hospital, where Dr. J.A. Reuter last night removed one eye, which was rendered sightless by flying copper from the caps. By unanimous vote at the 15th annual convention of the Oregon Retail jewelers' association in Portland, May 10, W.F. Boettcher, jeweler of this city was elected president of the association for the coming year. 100 Years Ago, May 11, 1903 Saturday, Mr. and Mrs. S.S. Smith disposed of their new house on the hill, just west of the East Hill school, to Mr. and Mrs. John Berry of High Prairie, Klickitat county (Washington). The consideration for the house and 12 lots were $3,000, the Smiths retaining three lots that they may again build if they so desire when they return from their trip east. Saturday, Mrs. Temple, who has bought out the millinery business of Mrs. Christians took possession of the business and is now engaged in rearranging the store preparatory to putting out her new stock. She has an entire new stock and will continue to receive new goods. From what we learn of Mrs. Temple she is a first class milliner and one deserving the best patronage this city can afford.
