History Mystery Photo The Dalles Chronicle June 22, 2003 page A10 With the news earlier in the week about the wind-driven collapse of the 100-year-old Klondike School, we thought most people would guess last week's mystery photo. Instead, only Doris Fleck and Gordon Hilderbrand knew that it was a picture of the Klondike School student body for the 1907-08 school year. Mr. Hilderbrand was kind enough to send along a photocopy from a Serman County Historical Society publication which reporduced the phot and identified most of the students: Back row left to right: "Elner Helyer, Thelma Anson, John Mattias, Teacher Miss Banmber, unknown, unknown, unknown. Middle row......Sylvia girl, Ross Hilderbrand with left hand on desk and Andy Walter with right hand on desk." The publication also said this about the school: "Klondike School was built of brick obtained in Goldendale, Washington by George Hilderbrand who lived nearby. It is the only brick country school in the county and was ready for use in 1907 and last used in 1932." We were sorry to see a part of Sherman County's history topple -- perhaps it passed the torch of landmark to the slowly turning blades of the nearby wind farm.
