Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicle's Files June 8, 2003 researched and assembled by Elroy King 20 Year Ago, June 8, 1983 The Antelope City Council, heavily dominated by followers of Rajneshee unanimously passed an ordinance "setting aside city property for relaxation and recreation without wearing clothing." The public nudity ordinance proposed by council member Ma Deva Parmita and passed Tuesday night, states that "the people of Antelope believe that the human body is beautiful" and that residents "wish to regain their innocence and get in touch with themselves and nature and learn to accept themselves totally as they are." The Schultens Motors Columbia Gorge Hustlers found themselves in a wild game last night as they defeated David Douglas 25-22 in American Legion action. The Hustlers, who officially became the Ray Schultens Motors Hustlers yesterday, played a game of tu-of-war with Douglas before finally shutting down their hosts in the last three innings and taking the victory.There were 47 runs, 32 base hits and 11 errors in the game and every starting Hustler had at least on RBI, with Max Clizer leading the way in that department with seven. 40 Years Ago, June 8, 1963 Cara Linn Wheeler, who was graduated this week from The Dalles High School, received a scholarship award this week from the Ford Foundation to study ballet at the San Francisco Ballet School for eight weeks this summer, beginning July 8. She will be taking instruction from Harold and Lew Christensen, brothers of William Christensen, head of the University of Utah ballet department in which Cara Linn will enroll this September. Dave Schreiber of Maupin (Oregon) has received a $3,000 half time research assistantship at Washington State University, PUllman (Washington), in agricultural engineering starting in September. Schreiber will work toward his master's degree while at WSU, where his special field of study will be soils and water. Jim Peterson's Chenowith Bulldogs (The Dalles) had a near perfect season this year with a 9-1 record, the loss being to the junior high school eighth graders. With that team, however, Chenowith won four out of five games. The Chenowith sluggers scored 51 runs on 43 hits to 28 runs and 26 hits by the opponents. 60 Years Ago, June 8, 1943 Marvin L. Markman of The Dalles and Wesley R. Ross of Wamic (Oregon) received B.S. degrees in engineering at the commencement exercises held May 29 at Oregon State College. Melvin A. Look of The Dalles received a B.S. in agriculture and Miss E. Ruth received a B.S. in secretarial science. Roy Darnielle of Gresham (Oregon), brother of Willis Darnielle of this city, is in The Dalles today in connection with his purchase of the D.S. Doyle grain and stock farm on Eight Mile Creek. The ranch already produces wheat, cherries, cows and hots and Darnielle states he intends to improve it further. Miss Margaret McDermid, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. McDermid of Wasco (Oregon) was graduated on Friday from the Oregon College of Education at Monmouth (Oregon). She received the degree of bachelor of science in elementary education and has signed a contract to teach next year at Oswego (Oregon). 80 Years Ago, June 8, 1923 Roscoe Krier and Griffith Williams started at 4 o'clock this morning on a bicycle trip to Portland. The boys were to make the city in two days time, reaching Cascade Locks tonight where they will make camp. A telephone call from Hood River about the middle of the morning assured their parents here that they were having a fine outing and keeping with the schedule. When in Portland they will visit at the home of Griffith's grandmother, Mrs. John Goss, and enjoy the Rose Festival. Four of the best golfers in the Pacific Northwest, Rudolph Wilhelm, Russell Smith, Walter Nash and Bill Handley, will play exhibition matches at The Dalles Country Club Sunday afternoon, as a result of arrangements made by local directors of the club. 100 Years Ago, JUne 8, 1903 A serious accident happened to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hunter last week at Mosier (Oregon). They had filled a beer keg with unslaked lime and afterwards poured in water when an explosion occurred and they both almost completely lost their eyesight. They were taken to Portland yesterday to ascertain whether or not anything can be done for them. Homer Angell, of whose record Dallesites are proud, returned this morning from New York, where he has just finished his course at Columbia college and received the degree of LL.B. {Bachelor of Laws}. As yet his plans for the future are not yet formulated. He expects, however, to wait until fall before entering his profession and will no doubt spend the summer on a surveying trip.
