    3. Surnames: Smith, Shumway, Neal, McCoy, Westgaard, Herreid, Fredrickson Thais Donna Smith, 80, a former resident of The Dalles, died in Aloha (Oregon) On July 4, 2003. She was born in Hood River (Oregon) on June 16, 1923 to Marion and Viva (Shumway) Neal. She graduated from The Dalles High School in 1941. She attended nurses training at The Dalles General Hospital with her three Sisters, with training at OHSU and Dornbecher's Children's Hospital. She Graduated in 1945. She met her husband of 58 years in The Dalles and they married on October 27, 1945 in a double ring ceremony with her sister. They made their first home in The Dalles and moved to Eugene (Oregon) in 1946, Then to Cottage Grove (Oregon) until 1949. They lived in McNary until 1951 then lived in Walla Walla (Washington) until 1958. They moved to Portland where they have lived until retirement in 1984 when they Returned to The Dalles. She was a homemaker. In Portland, she volunteered in local activities such as The PTA and served as president of the PTA of Cedar Mill School for many years. She used her nursing skills to help distribute polio vaccine to school children In the 1960s. She was an active member of the Corps of Engineers wives organization in McNary, Walla Walla and Portland. She was associated with the Episcopal Church and volunteered in the women's auxiliary in Walla Walla and Portland. She spent many hours volunteering at Mid-Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles. She enjoyed horses, bowling and Arts and Crafts. Survivors include her husband, Charles; and her children, Donna McCoy, Portland; Pam Westgaard, Aloha; Bev Herreid, Portland; and Lyle Smith, The Dalles; two Brothers, Noel Neal, Hood River; and Forest Neal, Enterprise (Oregon); a sister Sheila Fredrickson, Ocean Shores, Washington and seven grandchildren. At her request, no funeral service will be held. Cremation will take place after Family visitation on Wednesday, July 9. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
