    3. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through the Chornicle's Files June 29, 2003. Looking Back is researched and compiled each week by Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, June 29, 1983 The amount paid for legal services by the Northern Wasco County PUD came under fire at the PUD commissioners meeting Tuesday night. Hazel Phillips, who said she was appearing only as a PUD ratepayer, asked for an accounting of the legal fees for PUD, particularily those paid to Stan Heisler, the attorney for the local PUD. A team from The Dalles brought the Sasquatch Fours golf championship back to town with a victory in the two-day, 36 hole event held at The Dalles Country Club. Bobbie Griffiths, Dolores Smith, Fumi Sato and Bev McKinney combined for a low net score of 264 to beat another The Dalles team by three strokes. 40 Years Ago, June 29, 1963 The new Zoning Improvement Program (Zip) of the Post Office Department will go into use Monday throughout the nation, Acting Postmaster James Sandoz pointed out today. It is a five-digit system (the number for The Dalles is 97058) designed "to speed mail delivery by cutting down on the number of steps required to move mail from sender to addressee" Sandoz said. The Wasco County Democratic Central Committee re-elected three offices Friday night, including Robert Welty as chairman, Mrs. Charles Wilson as vice-chairman and Georg Wernmark, treasurer. Mrs. Otis Sheets was named as secretary, succeeding Alvina Morris. 60 Years Ago, June 29, 1943 The two county fire trucks, in charge of H.R. Robinson of Rowena (Oregon), and Herbert Morrow, road foreman at Wasco (Oregon), were called at 3:16 Monday afternnon to help extinguish a fire on 12 acres of brush pasture land owned by J.E. Kennedy, three miles south of Wamic. 80 Years Ago, June 29, 1923 A special meeting has been arranged to take place tonight at the Chamber of Commerce for the purpose of organizing The Dalles branch of the Oregon State Motor association. Business men generally have been invited to meet with A.H. Lee, president, and Fred DeElliott, field secretary of the Oregon State Motor association, who are in the city to complete arrangements. Through a transaction which was completed yesterday, C.S. Hampton of Pendleton (Oregon) purchased the Hackett-Gott furniture from D. Gott, possession by Mr. Hampton taking effect immediately. The new owner of this well known local business establishment is a furniture man of long experience. Mr. Hampton recently sold his half interest in the Cruickshank-Hampton of Pendleton. Following the disposal of his Pendleton business, Mr. Hampton visited many points in the northwest looking for a location. 100 Years Ago, June 29, 1903 A distressing accident in which Fred Foster, one of the deck hands on the steamer Dalles City lost his life, occurred near Bingen (Washington) landing yesterday. It appears that he was scuffling with a fellow, and attempted to run around the yard rail, when he missed his footing and fell overboard. The alarm was immediately given and a boat lowered, but before assistance could reach him he sank and no trace could be found of him. Andy Baldwin, who for a number of years had been proprietor of the Baldwin saloon in The Dalles, has purchased the Columbia Hotel and will take charge of the same tomorrow. Mr. Baldwin is well and favorably known throughout Eastern Oregon and when formerly in business was one of the most popular men in that line, and that he will make a success of the venture is a safe prediction.
