History Mystery Photo (Text Only) "We had a huge response to last week's photo, and no surprise. This is one of the most famous photos taken in the area. When it appeared in The Chronicle, it was headlined "Remarkable Rescue." The incident took place on September 7, 1952 at Celilo Falls. Eight-year-old Danny Sampson, a Yakima Tribal fisher, fell from his platform upriver. Archie Bushman, of the Umatilla Tribe, was fishing on a downriver platform and used his dipnet to pull Sampson to safety. The photo was taken by Robert L. Wheeler, founder of Wheeler's Electronics in The Dalles an amateur photographer who happened to be on the scene that day. "Life" magazine used a slightly different shot from the same roll of film as its cover, calling it "miraculous." Celilo Falls, 12 miles upstream from The Dalles, was covered by the waters impounded behind The Dalles Dam at the completion of the dam in 1957. We heard from many people, including Kristina (Sampson) McConville who said Sampson was her father's older brother and that he has since passed on. Joe George sent this message: "I was fishing at Celilo the day it was taken, about 100 yards downstream, but I didn't know of it until I got back to my car at the Celilo Cafe a few hours later. I didn't think much about it as one or more Indians would fall in each summer during the big fall run. Footing was wet and slippery. The scaffolds were rickety, making it very tricky footing." Willis Goldsten said his father and older brother were both at the falls that day and saw the whole thing."
