Looking Back: A Glimpse Through the Chronicle's Files July 13, 2003 researched and assembled from the Chronicle archives each week by Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, July 13, 1983 Despite strong opposition from two school board members and most of the audience; the District 9 board voted 3-2 at a special meeting Tuesday night to change a proposal it had earlier on the cost of District 12 using Sid White football field. The new proposal kept the flat $250 fee per game but eliminated $1,000 in money or material toward a new broadcast booth at the field. County Commissioner Rick Cantrell announced today he was resigning effective August 10 to accept a missionary assisgnment for his church. Cantrell served four years as Wasco County judge and on November 2, 1982 was elected to a four year term as commissioner. 40 Years Ago, July 13, 1963 Dedication of the new gymnasium and convent of St. Mary's Academy will take place with ceremonies the afternoon of Sunday, July 21. Principal speakers will be Most Reverend Francis P. Leipzig, bishop of the Baker (Oregon) diocese. Various other deignitaries will gather for the occasion. The Reverend Virgil Brown, new minister at the Evangelical United Brethren Church, replaces the Reverend Roy Erford, who left for Los Angeles in June to do graduate work toward his doctorate degree. Reverend Brown has previously served churches in Reardon, Washington, for two years and in Colfax, Washington. 60 Years Ago, July 13, 1943 The Pines Dairy, largest fluid milk supplier in the local areas, will go out of business July 15 it was announced today by Mrs. Gladys L. Rogers, owner. Inability to operate under the OPA milk price ceiling, plus a serious shortage of experienced help, motivated the decision to quit, Mrs. Rogers explained. The Pines Dairy has been in business her for 18 years. Construction work on the second story of the administration building at The Dalles airport began last Friday in a small way but "really got underway yesterday:, according to Councilman Paul Weigalt today. The necessary lumber is on the ground, and the contractor and carpenters are pushing work on the building, which when finished will be occupied by the civil aeronautics administration personnel, now housed at the old airport field and by the S & M Flying Service of Portland, which leased the field for commercial and civilian flying last week. 80 Years Ago, July 13, 1923 Amid a great tribute of flowers and in the solemn confines of the First Congregational Church, last rites for Mrs. P.J. Stadelman, wife of Mayor Stadelman, were held this afternoon at 3 o'clock. The church was packed with friends and relatives of the deceased. All stores and business houses of the city were closed between the hours of 2:30 and 4 o'clock this afternoon during the ceremonies in reverence to the departed woman, who was held high in the esteem. With a change in the management of the Franklin Motor care company and the addition of two men in the repair shop, announcement of a policy of "better service" to Franklin and Star car owners was made yesterday. H.F. Murch who has been with the Portland Motor car company for the past three years has taken over management and George Kerr has been engaged as bookkeeper for the company. 100 Years Ago, July 13, 1903 Saturday Judge Sears overruled the motion of Martin V. Leasia for a new trial and sentenced the convicted murderer of his father in law, Ferdinand H. Drews, to imprisonment for life. Thirty days were allowed the prisoner's attorneys Murray and Watts, in which to prepare and file a bill of exception. Those who have made the trip to Mt. Hood over the Barlow route or from Portland, will remember Hector Campbell, who kept the Summit House. A visitor to that place last Wednesday found his dead body in his isolated store, where he had died alone and unattended. The coroner of Clackamas county investigated the case and found that death resulted from natural causes. Interment was made in Portland.
