    3. The Dalles Daily Chronicle Thursday, January 29, 1891, page two The dispatches yesterday announced the death of W.A. McPherson at Portland. Mac was well known throughout the state especially among the newspaper fraternity of which for years he was an honored and brilliant member. He was a man of fine attainments, a graceful and pleasing writer, thoroughly versed in Oregon history a part of which he was. He was the friend of such men as Nesmith and the "Sage of Yoncalla" and was full of reminisences of pioneer days. Poor old Mac! the ship of his life was wrecked on the bar that is ruled by old Silenus, and he has gone to his last sleep. He had but one enemy, himself. May he rest well beneath the verdent sod of Oregon he loved so tenderly, until the last great day, and that then he may be judged as he has judged his fellow man. LOCAL BREVITIES page three Mrs. E.L. Hemingway of Almota is visiting friends here. Reverend H. Brown and wife went to Portland this morning. Mr. Thompson is getting along nicely and will be able to be out soon. Mr. Bailey who has been visiting friends left for Albina (Oregon) this morning. Mr. J.F. Magee who has been sick for a long time was on the street for the first time in several months yesterday. Honorable A.J. Dufur visited our sanctum today. He has just returned from Salem (Oregon) and feels confident the portage railroad bill will pass. Mrs. E.T. Scott's lecture tonight in Congregational church is "Sowing and Reaping or What we give to Posterity". Everybody should hear it. The commissions for the examing surgeons for the pension bureau have arrived. Drs. Shackelfore, Doane and Logan comprise the board. Mr. John Bost reports the ground in fair condition for the plow the other side of Fifteen Mile, though it is somewhat dry yet. Quite a snow storm prevailed there Tuesday. If you want a good meal cooked as your mother used to cook it go to the Baldwin. Mrs. Graham has charge of the kitchen and that alone is guarantee enough for us. A fine bunch of lettuce from Mr. Beers garden was left at this office this morning. If there is another state in the Union in the same latitude that can grow garden sass in January we would like to hear from it. The partnership heretofore existing between Drs. Doane and Boyd has been dissolved by mutual consent. Dr. Doane will retain the office now occupied by the firm. Company A, Third regiment, had a large attendance at company drill last evening and Captain Thompson says it is his intention to have a larger turnout next week. Several new recruits were brought in, and we hope that the interest that is now being shown may be continued. HOTEL ARRIVALS Umatilla House L. Neustadter, Wasco (Oregon). C.R. Rollins, M.D., Grass Valley (Oregon). N. P. Hausen, Monkland (Oregon). Geo. P. Towne, Portland. L.J. Patterson, Portland. Chas E. Morrison, Portland. H.C. Ellet, Kansas City. J.A. Weston, Kansas City. G.E. Nolin, Dufur (Oregon). A.J. Dufur, Dufur. S.R. Husbands, Mosier (Oregon). E.S. Medler, Wasco. Karl S. Breckenridge, Paris (Oregon?). Little Jimmie Freedman, Portland. Big Jimmie Freedman, Portland. NOTICE The "Y's" will meet Friday, January 30th (3 p.m.) at the residence of Mrs. Colonel Houghton. All members who can, please attend. (signed) Mrs. Jas. Carnaby. 3. The Dalles Chronicle February 2, 2003 compiled by Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, February 2, 1983 The reorganization committee made up of two local school districts will meet tonight at the Wasco Education Service District meeting room. The committee will discuss the reorganization report compiled by Dr. George Martin, who was hired by the ESD (Education Service District) to conduct the study. Jill Conlee and Michael Sullivan came away with top honors in their respective divisions at the Sherman County Chess Tournament held at the Wasco Grade School. Miss Conlee won in the seventh and eight grade division and Sullivan won in the fifth and sixth grade division. 40 Years Ago, February 2, 1963 Alan (Jerry) Rogers, 33, a former member of The Dalles Police reserve for several years has joined the local police department, replacing Wood W. Barker, who resigned in December, Chief Robert Brower reported this week. 60 Years Ago, February 2, 1943 Another member of the famous Dick family of The Dalles has carved a niche in University of Oregon basketball game. He is Ed Dick, youngest of four brothers who have played at Oregon, considered the best prospect in the bunch by Coach Howard Hobson. It is stated by local rationing boards that athletic coaches or teachers who use their personal cars for transporting their athletic teams to the practice field, gymnasiums or games may be considered as using their vehicles occupationally and therefore be eligible for supplementary "B" rations. 80 Years Ago, February 2, 1923 F.B. Ingels of Dufur (Oregon) was elected president of the Wasco County Farmers Union at their meeting held here Wednesday. The other officers chosen were: Roy Batty, of Maupin, vice president; O.W. Moore, secretary-treasurer; Samuel Walke, doorkeeper; H.R. Richards, chaplain; and Willard Richards, conductor. The executive committee is comprised of John Hix, J. Hillman, H.R. Richards, J.C. Johnson and Sam Brown. Ben R. Liftin, general manager of the CHRONICLE PUBLISHING COMPANY has acquired possession of the stock held by William P. Merry, and now is sole owner and published of the CHRONICLE. Negotiations were concluded in Portland Wednesday. Reorganization of the corporation took place today. The directors chosen were Ben R. Liftin, president; A.K. Liftin, vice-president; and L. Schassen, secretary-treasurer. 100 Years Ago, February 2, 1903 The young people of the Lutheran church have organized a new Luther League, the offices selected for the following year being Miss Anna Stubling, president; Miss Bertha Kellar, vice president; Gus Walther, treasurer; and Margaret Stuben, secretary. An unlucky number of applicants were admitted into the antlered herd at their meeting Saturday night, two from this city and eleven from Sherman county. The local order of Elks is in a most flourish condition at present now numbering 163 members with prospects of several more in the near future. 3. The Dalles Chronicle February 2, 2003 (Text Only) The building on Third Street was the first home of C.H. Urness Motors, founded in 1946. Lots of folks knew this one, and most recognized the winged horse on the pumps as a logo for Mobilgas. Lots os extras came with the calls. Jake Grossmiller said the cars in the photo are a Ford, a Studebaker, a Ford roadster and a Plymouth. Lee Agidius said his uncle, Walt Agidius, worked at the gas station for many years. His Grace, the Rt. Rev. Rusty Kimsey (Ret.) calling both for himself and his cousin Duff Kimsey, said the station was owned by his uncle, Dolph Kimsey. Ruth Radcliffe said the gas station was later converted to Stewarts Real Estate and her husband worked there many years. Several other folks nentioned that behind the gas station, next to the alley, was a small building where Harry Morioka had his first radio repair shop, in the days before television. The former Auto Electric building at Second and Union, located where the new post office is today. According to George, Auto Electric had the downstairs and the upper floor was given over to the Union Rooms, at one stage a brothel presided over by "Big Betty". 3. The Dalles Chronicle January 26, 2003 Compiled each week by Elroy King. 40 Years Ago, January 26, 1963 Work began this week to clear an additional portion of the old St. Mary's Academy site on Third Street and make way for construction of a building to house Joseph Knoll's Dodge dealership here. Harry Walther, from whom Knoll of Knoll Motor Company in Hood River is leasing the property, said plans have been dropped to request the planning commission to grant a variance from city ordinance requiring a 30-foot setback from the front property line. A new volunteer fire department with Than Kramer appointed as chief has been organized in Dufur (Oregon) with the assistance of Dalles Fire Chief Charles Roth Jr. Twenty-two men turned out for the first meeting Wednesday and larger attendance is expected for classes in an educational program to be conducted by Roth. Paul Glenn, grand exaulted ruler of The Dalles Elks Lodge No. 303 died at 9:30 a.m. today in Astoria (Oregon) while attending the mid-winter meeting of the Oregon Elks Association. Death was attributed to a heart attack. 60 Years Ago, January 26, 1943 Eight men from The Dalles who are attending the University of Oregon at Eugene this week were initiated into fraternities: Robert Bloom, Theta Chi; Ed Crane, Dolph Kimsey, Edgar Dick and Jim Dunahoo, Sigma Nu; Bill Galloway and Wilbur Peterson, Kappa Sigma; and Lawrence Beaudoin, Phil Delta Theta. The Moro high school Huskies lost the second game of the league series in Moro (Oregon) last Friday evening, when the tall Kent (Oregon) quintet took a hard fought game 21-30. Twenty of Kents points were made in the first half, Moro holding them to ten points in the last half, while the home team scored 11 counts. Jack von Borstel of Kent was the high scorer, making 19 of his teams 30 points. H. Zeigler was top man for the Huskies, scoring 8 points. The CHRONICLE suffered another causality to the Portland shipyards this week when E.T. Carswell, advertising manager, left to be employed by the Willamette Iron & Steel Company. Carswell has been employed in the advertising department of The Chronicle since 1936. 80 Years Ago, January 26, 1923 Using the "Mission of the Ku Klux Klan" as his topic John A. Jeffry, Portland attorney, last night addressed a capacity house at the civic auditorium. Many were turned away, unable to gain entrance to the theater, in which every available bit of standing room commensurate with safety was occupied. Jeffry defended the ideals and purposes of the klan, declaring that it was not responsible for outrages attributed to it over the country. He also spoke of the Americanism of the order. 100 Years Ago, January 26, 1903 Honorable E.O. McCoy has purchased the Main street lot and buildings of W.A. Wallis in Moro, including the brick store. Word was received in the city of the death of Thomas M. Bennett, father of Judge A.S. Bennett, at the home of his son, Sam Bennett, last night at 8 o'clock at Tygh Valley (Oregon). 3. The Dalles Chronicle January 19, 2003 20 Years Ago, January 19, 1983 Thursday will be an important day for Kelli Bray, The Dalles Area Junior Miss in her quest for the title of Oregon Junior Miss. Kelli and other constants will have their interview with the judges at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Above average water yields are expected for the rest of 1983, according to measurements taken in the city watershed on January 13, Bill Keyser, director of the department of water supply and treatment, said the rain and snow accumulations at the High Prairie Snow Court on that date showed an average snow depth of 86.78 inches with a water content of 31.64 inches and an average density of 36 percent. He said the average precipitation for the entire year at the 6,100 foot elevation is 40 inches. 40 Years Ago, January 19, 1963 At the annual meeting of the First Congregational Church last Sunday, Dr. John M. Campbell was re-elected as moderator. Serving with him in 1963 will be J.W. Tindall, clerk; James M. Beer, treasurer; Elvera Myers, financial secretary; John Thompson, Sunday School superintendent; Mrs. Lawrence Evans, assistant Sunday School superintendent. Construction of a large freezer room and holding cooler is underway in preparation for the re-opening February 1 of the Grandview Market, 2301 E. 10th Street. Leonard Huston and his son, Harold (Bud) Huston have returned here and will open the business under the name of Huston's Grandview Market. 60 Years Ago, January 19, 1943 The first ice seen in the Columbia River at The Dalles this winter put in an appearance last night, most of it pouring into this waterway from the John Day, it was reported by rivermen this morning. The Upper River tugboat, "Megler", which sank at the edge of the Washington shore in the big wind storm Friday, was raised yesterday by a derrick from Portland, sumped out, temporarily reconditioned, and then proceeded under its own power from The Dalles to Portland, where today it is in dock undergoing repairs. The "March of Dollars and Dimes" was set moving at a meeting held at The Dalles last night by Mr. and Mrs. Willis Darnielle, Alf E. Wernmark, Lay A. Carlisle, Maynard Culver, Lee E. Johnson and Joseph H. Steers. Carlisle reported $363.90 in the treasury from a year ago, of which $99.46 was a refund from the national committee in New York. 80 Years Ago, January 19, 1923 Recent examinations of local vineyards made by Professor H. Hartman of Oregon Agricultural college, in conjunctions with local horticulturists, disclosed that this district is free from grapevine diseases. Accordingly, the chamber horticultural bureau has made arrangements to propagate at least 25,000 vines, from cuttings taken locally during the present year, W.N. Nelson said today. The cuttings will be propagated by the Milton Nursery company. 100 Years Ago, January 19, 1903 Flags have been at half mast throughout the city today in respect to the memory of our late congressman Thomas H. 3. The Dalles Chronicle January 19, 2003 (Text Only) Last week's puzzler, drew few responses, even though we gave the Sherman County clue. Many folks guessed a grain elevator, which is understandable. But Paulen Kaseberg, Pat Arthur and John Lundell knew it as a distillery in the community of Grant (Oregon) at the base of the cliff west of Rufus and east of Biggs Junction. It's not surprising that few knew of the community, which was washed away in the flood of 1894 and never rebuilt. But not all the town was lost. Dorothy Mathison of Hood River called to tell us at the time of the flood her grandfather, Lucias Clark, operated the ferry between Biggs and Columbis (as Maryhill (Washington) was known at the time). He spotted the distillery floating down the Columbia, and with the help of a Mr. McDonald, rowed out and maneuvered the building into shore about a mile below Biggs. He salvaged the timber from the building and built a house in the area. Our thanks for a great story. Does anyone know if the house still exists? Partial articles from the newspaper. 17 Coyote Puppies Meet Death Against Walls of Court House Seventeen live coyote puppies, comprising two litters which wer found in one den, were brought to the court house this morning by Frank E. Kirkham of Dufur (Oregon). Kirkham wanted to keep the coyotes and raise them, and also collect the bounty on them. He was informaed that the law prohibits payment of bounty on live animals, and accordingly took them outside the building and killed them. He collected a total of $51 in bounty upon the lot. Bodies of Man and Saddled Horse Go Over Celilo Rapids Evidences of a tragedy somewhere along the upper reaches of the Columbia river, was seen by persons watching the Indians fish at Celilo Falls yesterday when the body of a man floated over the falls and continued down the river. A short time later the body of a horse, with a saddle still fastened to it, also passed by. Coroner Barget said this morning that he had not been notified of the incident. Whether or not the body is far down the river now depends upon whether it caught in any of the numerous whirl-pools in the eddies between Celilo and Seufert's (cannery). Heroic Priest of World War Dies Father Malloy, Irish Chaplain, To Be Buried in The Dalles. Father F. Malloy, who served as chaplain with an Irish regiment during the world war, succumbed to the effect of wounds, gas and shellshock at Heppner (Oregon) Saturday night, and will be buried her Wednesday morning following requiem mass at St. Peter's Catholic church. Father Malloy's war record was a splendid one. He was a resident of New Zealand, but at the outbreak of the war went to London (England), where he volunteered and was assigned as chaplain of an Irish regiment. With this organization he served at Gallipoli, in France and in Belgium, participating in practically every major engagement. After the war, suffering acutely from his injuries, he cam to this country and traveled for his health, at the same time campaiging vigorously for the soldiers' bonus. Several weeks ago he went to Heppner to visit Father Cantwell, of St. Patrick's parish, an old school mate. There he was taken down with a relapse from his injuries, and death followed Saturday night after much suffering. Legion to Participate The body will be b rought to The Dalles tomorrow afternoon. The Burget-Mogan company is in charge of funeral arrangements. Right Reverend Joseph F. McGrath, bishop of eastern Oregon, with headquarters at Baker will officiate at the funeral services. Commander Pat Foley of the American Legion post here has asked that the post take part in the funeral services, and arrangements will be made tomorrow, he announced this afternoon. If it does not conflict with the burial services of the Catholic church, a firing squad may take part in the concluding services at the grave-side in the Catholic cemetery. Looking Backward page two April 24, 1897 About two weeks ago Mrs. Obarr, in brushing some dust from her shoulder with her left hand, struck a needle which had stuck in her dress. The needle penetrated the end of the third finger, eye foremost, and broke off, as subsequent events proved, leaving two of the broken pieces in her finger. She went to Mr. McArthur, at the electric light plant, and had him take an X-ray photograph of the finger. The picture showed the piece of the needle lying with the eye near the fingernail. It was removed. Mr. Josh French returned last night from San Francisco (California) coming up on the Dalles City (stern wheeler boat). He had been away since last November. Mrs. Mary French returned from San Francisco, where she had spent the winter. 3. The Dalles Chronicle January 12, 2003 Compiled by Elroy King of the Chronicle staff. 40 Years Ago, January 12, 1963 The first training session in a series for community leaders in the Civil Defense program will be held February 6 it was announced this week. It will be a medical self help class, under direction of Dr. E.E. Berg, medical officer of the Wasco-Sherman Public Health Department and will consist of six three-hour sessions on consecutive Wednesdays. Unless winter storms produce a good supply of snow in coming weeks irrigation water supplies from streams may be deficient this year in the Hood River-Wasco County area. The snowpack as of January 1 was one of the poorest ever measured, according to W.T. Frost, snow survey supervisor for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service, cooperating with Oregon State University and state engineers. The Redskins of Maupin (Oregon) opened their Deschutes League play last night with a 43-29 win over hosting Dufur (Oregon). Lawrence Peetz led the victors in scoring and rebounds with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Rick Cantrell was high for Dufur with 10. 60 Years Ago, January 12, 1943 Presented with a gigantic key to Dalles City (only one of several names city has been known as) by Mayor George P. Stadelman, as the Union Pacific streamliner City of Portland steamed into The Dalles station on time at 7:55 this morning Captain Marion Carl and his bride received the acclaim of some two hundred citizens of this city gathering on the depot platforms. Handshaking and not a few kisses for the bride from Brooklyn became the order of the moment. (Note: Captain Carl was Oregon's war ace as mentioned in a previous account.) 80 Years Ago, January 12, 1923 Fourteen candidates were initiated into The Dalles Lodge of Elks at last nights meeting. The names were Clarence Lamborn, Frank Callaghan, W.F. Doak, J.S. Miller, C.A. Harth, C.F. Emerson, John McLeod, Walter Ross, G.W. Sickafoose, R.W. Breyman, J.J. Van Dellen, J.P. Rath, John Milne, Harry W. Dodge. J.B. Kilmore was made a member of The Dalles Lodge by demit from Astoria (Oregon) Lodge No. 180. The annual meeting of the directors and officers of the Wasco county bank was held last night. All of the old members of the board were reelected and the only changes in the list of officers was in the addition of Jess L. Sexton as assistand cashier. The officers of the bank are as follows: George C. Blakeley, president; T.H. West, vice-president; E.E. Fitzwater, cashier; H.W. Scherrer and Jess L. Sexton assistant cashiers. The directors are George C. Blakeley, J.Park Bolton, Dr. H.C. Dodds, C.A. Tonn, George Webb and T.H. West. 100 Years Ago, January 12, 1903 As will be noted by an announcement in another column, H.C. Liebe has been appointed watch inspector for the O.R. & N. (Oregon Railroad & Navigation) Company. This will no doubt meet with the approval of the railroad boys, many of whom are accustomed to frequenting Harry's place of business and have great faith in him as a workman. John M. Parry has been appointed as postmaster at Moro (Oregon) in Sherman County. 3. The Dalles Chronicle January 12, 2003 (Text Only) Last week's photo was a stumper for most folks, and we got guesses from Lyle (Washington) to White River (Washington) to the Deschutes (Oregon) to Biggs (Oregon). The lone correct answer came from Jo Ann Wixon of The Dalles, who e-mailed, "I can't help but respond to this weeks mystery photo, which is Mitchell Point (Hood River county, Oregon)...more specifically my Grandmother, Elsie Tenney and her dog Klondike! Do I get extra points for knowing the dogs name?" We're happy to throw in extra points for nifty details like that. Mike Tenney, who supplied the photo, added this background: "Elsie E. "Babe" Tenney (along with her dog Klondike) ran the Texaco station, lunch counter, tourist court and the hunting lodge in the upper right from about 1932 until her death in 1944. Former President Theodore Roosevelt used to hunt elk up over the mountain behind as a guest of the lodge, which had a split-log staircase and was like a miniature Timberline (Lodge), Mt. Hood) It burned to the ground in the early 1960s." 3. The Dalles Daily Chronicle, Monday, January 26, 1891, page 3 LOCAL BREVITIES J.G. Farley and Robert Mays are in Salem. A.A. Bonney shipped a carload of cattle to Clarnie (Oregon) yesterday. Miss Annie Williams has gone to Tacoma (Washington) to enter the Annie Wright seminary at that place. Mr. Charles Richmond was taken suddenly ill yesterday afternoon with a congestive chill. He is much better today and will be out again in a day or so. Messrs. S.J. LaFrance and Oscar Stranahan of Hood River (Oregon) are in the city, and so is nearly everybody else from that fruitful precinct. An alarm of fire last night was caused by a burning flue at Mr. Rowland's place on the corner of Fourth and Laughlin. There was no damage done. The trip down to the Cascades yesterday was a merry one, but on the way back M.T. Nolan opened a bundle of OREGONIANS and these absorbed the crowd. Messrs. Mosier and Davenport of Mosier (Oregon), both old timers who came here in the early fifties (1850s) are in the city today, and honored our sanctum with a visit. Mr. V.C. Brock of Sherman county Saturday evening turned over to County Treasurer Ruch seventeen Sherman county warrents representing in value the sum of $8,364,96 the amount owing to Wasco (county) according to the settlement agreed upon on the division of the country. A YOUNG FOLKS PARTY A very pleasant surprise party was given to Lena Liebe on Saturday afternoon. Those present were, Christine, Clara and Julia Nickelsen, Gussie Meins, Annie Wentz, Georgie Sampson, Lena Thompson, Pearl Williams, Grace Glenn, Dora Neilsen, Bessie and Lena Vogt, Valesca Liebe and Lena Liebe, George Newman, Charlie Schmidt, Georgie Ruch, Georgie Arnald, Peter and Theodore Nickelsen, George Gundlach, Theodore Liebe. BURNED TO DEATH A sad occurrence was witnessed on Lower Trout on Thursday of last week at the residence of Mr. Linville, in which a little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Linville, about four years of age, lost her life. Mrs. Linville had left two children, aged about two and four years respectively, in the house while she was attending to some work outside the house. During her absence the smaller of the children was playing with a fire poker and with it ignited the clothes of the four-year-old girl, and before Mrs. Linville arrived and put out the flames the little girl was so badly burned that she died from her injuries the following day. The little girl suffered intense pain for twenty-four hours until death came to her relief. The remains were laid to rest at the Hay Creek cemetery on Sunday last.
