The Dalles Chronicle April 6, 2003 20 Years Ago, April 6, 1983 Wasco County deputies already in the area on the investigation of a cattle shooting rescued a Prineville (Oregon) man who was thrown in the water when he went over Shearar's Falls in a kayak Tuesday evening. The victim of the kayak accident, identified as Marty Ray Carroll, 20, was pulled out of the Deschutes River below the falls by a deputy. He was taken to the hospital by Maupin (Oregon) ambulance and treated for hypothermia and released. 40 Years Ago, April 6, 1963 Three candidates are in the race for the District 12 school board position to be vacated June 30 by Dr. John Gilhousen, present board chairman. As the deadline for candidacy neared the field Friday afternoon included L.W. Hoskins, Edgar Dick and Dale Fallon. Mrs. Bonnie Smith, who had taken out a petition, did not file a candidacy. Harry Hogan, former Wasco county district attorney, has been named associate solicitor for water and power in the Department of Interior in Washington, D.C. Hogan has been serving as regional solicitor for the Department in Portland. Interior Secretary Steward Udall made the announcement. Another school record was broken again Friday during the first annual Mid-Columbia Invitational Track meet held in The Dalles. This time however it was a Hood River High School mark and in the pole vault. Frank Eastlery vaulted 11 feet, one-quarter inch breaking Hood River's old mark of 11 feet. Ironically, Steve Lawrence, The Dalles, set a new DHS (Dalles High School) record at Hood River Monday when he soared 11-7. 60 Years ago, April 6, 1943. The bomb reconnaissance school being held tonight at the civic auditorium, starting at 8 o'clock, will hold its second session this evening with Lt. John P. Tipper of the army bomb disposal command in charge. Anyone interested is asked to communicate with Charles Roth Jr., fire chief, or enroll personally in the class at the auditorium. Miss Celia B. Hood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Hood of Tygh Valley (Oregon), is the first young woman from that district to enlist in the WAVES. 80 Years Ago, April 6, 1923 A resolution condemning the proposed referendum movements on the state income tax and oleomargarine bill, was adopted by the Pomona Grange of Wasco County at a recent meeting held at Eightmile. It was pointed out in the general discussion that Governor Pierce, in his campaign as governor of Oregon, made a state income tax as one of the principal talking points of his candidacy. Grangers took the stand that the income tax as passed is the fulfillment by the governor of this pledge and that the measure should at least be given a trial. Abandonment of the bounty system of predatory animal extermination, and a cooperative effort between the county and the United States Biology Survey to trap these pests by means of paid men is asked in a petition filed in the county court this morning by County Agriculture Agent C.W. Daigh. Wasco County already has two government trappers, one maintained by the Biological Survey and another by stockmen and sheepmen. 100 Year Ago, April 6, 1903 News has just reached us on the total destruction by fire of G.W. Bowen's store and post office at Glenwood (Washington). The fire started Wednesday evening while Mr. Bowen was at supper. The blaze spread rapidly to the oil room, and before even the books could be saved the entire building was destroyed. The Dalles Chronicle April 6, 2003 (Text Only) As can be seen by the inscription around the edges of last week's photo, our subject was the original home of Judge Joseph Gardner Wilson, dating from 1865-1915. The site of the home, which looks to be quite far out in the country from the photo, is at Ninth and Lewis Streets in The Dalles, not far from the Joseph G. Wilson school that was named in his honor. Joseph G. Wilson graduated from Cincinnati Law School in 1852. He married Elizabeth Millar in November, 1854 and the couple lived in the Salem (Oregon) area. In 1862, Wilson was named the first circuit court judge in Wasco County. Ten years later he was elected to Congress and moved to Ohio. He died in Ohio in 1873 and his wife and four children moved back to The Dalles. Elizabeth Millar Wilson taught for one year at the Union Street School and the following year, 1874, became the first woman Postmistress in the U.S., appointed to run The Dalles office by Ulysses S. Grant. She served until 1886. In 1925, the name of East Hill School (originally built in 1894) was changed to Joseph G. Wilson School. The Dalles Chronicle March 20, 2003 Looking Back is compiled weekly by Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, March 30, 1983 Persons interested in finding a solution to the condemnation of the first base bleachers at Quinton Street Ball Park (The Dalles) are being asked to attend a meeting at noon at Spooky's Pizza Village. Jack Willis and Jerry Urness have called the meeting to determine any action the public might take in helping school district 12, the owner of the property, solve the problem. 40 Years Ago, March 30, 1963 Petersburg school board visited the upper Chenowith School Friday night to learn more about Chenowith's plans for physical facilities and curriculum for the high school to be operated there this fall. Petersburg Chairman Carl Kaser said the board met twice at Chenowith - first with the District 9 (Chenowith) board and then independently after viewing the upper building. Dalles Fire Chief Charles Roth Jr. and Lt. George D. Telfer will be among more than 200 fire service command officers from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, California, Hawaii and British Columbia attending the fifth annual Northwest Command School April 1-4. 60 Years Ago, March 31, 1943 Delmar Kendrick, Dalles High School senior and son of Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Kendrick, was the winner last evening of the American Legion oratorical contest for Eastern Oregon held at the Eastern Oregon College of Education at La Grande. He earns the right to go to Salem (Oregon) to enter the state contest and his name will be placed upon a plaque. Miss Anna Macnab, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.S. Macnab of Wasco (Oregon) was on the honor roll at Marylhurst Normal for the term ending March 9. Miss Macnab is a senior at Marylhurst and holds the office of student body president. 80 Years Ago, March 30, 1923 An oil portrait of Joseph H. Sherar, a former pioneer of Wasco County, builder of the Sherar's grade and of Sherar's bridge, which at the present time is being replaced by a new structure, is now in the office of Circuit Judge Fred W. Wilson and along with other pictures of Wasco pioneers, will be hung in the courthouse in the near future. A portrait of Orland Humason, the first county judge of Wasco County and the man who introduced the bill making Wasco County, will soon be hung over the bench in county court. 100 Years Ago, March 30, 1903 Last Tuesday night the cellar at the William Jordan home on Chenowith Creek was entered and a lot of wine taken, the house ransacked and $35 in money, a note for $107 and a mortgage stolen. Coming into the city later, Mr. Jordan reported to Marshal Woods, producing a pipe which the culprit had left behind. Strange as it may seem, the marshal recognized the pipe as the property of a man by the name of W.G. Cullen, who he had in jail last summer for mistreating his little daughter. Cullen lives in the Chenowith neighborhood and it seems that with him was a harness maker by the name of Oscar Helgrin, and the two men being under the influence of liquor, told neighbors they had taken some things from Jordan's. This morning a warrant was issued for their arrest and the preliminary hearing has not take place as we go to press. The Dalles Chronicle March 23, 2003, page B4 Compiled by Elroy King. 40 Years Ago, March 23, 1963 With the promotion of Sergeant Les L. Thouvenel to head the local office of the Oregon State police, Corporal James Shelton of Pendleton (Oregon) has been assigned to The Dalles as second officer in charge effective April 1. Thouvenel took over the office here March 1, with the retirement last February of Sergeant C. A. U'Ren, who is now in charge of The Dalles Bridge. An inky black mixture of silt and water spewed from the end of a (15,000) foot long pipeline here Friday as dredging began on The Dalles Highway bypass project. The material is being pumped from the bottom of the Columbia River into the area on which the freeway's grade is being built by the contractor, Roy L. Houck, [&] Sons. 60 Years Ago, March 23, 1943 Two more dairies supplying The Dalles are going out of business according to announcements made today. J.Y. Gibson, operator of Alfalfa Lawn dairy for the last 10 years said this morning that he is quitting business April 1. The recent half cent increase in the milk price in not sufficient to compensate for higher feed and labor costs, Gibson declared. The second dairy operation that will go out of business is the Ingels herd in the Dufur (Oregon) valley. The prize herd of 22 Jersey cows this week were advertised for sale. Milk supplied by the herd had been sold wholesale to Dalles distributors. According to Frank Ingels it has been found impractical to continue operations under the present price and labor setup. 80 Years Ago, March 23, 1923 Records of the transfer of title to the Dufur (Oregon) Farm and Fruit company, by the Washington Securities company, of the property purchased by the latter company at the sheriff's sale of the Dufur Orchard CoOwners company on January 15 were filed in the office of the county clerk this morning. The new company is capitalized at $200,000 and C.G. Frisbie, Marvin E. Holland and William C. Holland are the incorporators. The Women's Christian Temperance Union met on Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. H.M. Ford, who had charge of the program for the day. Mrs. C.A. Fox, vice-president, presided over the meeting. Reverend John L. Logue gave the main address, entitled "Law Enforcement." J.O. Randall, recently employed by the Welcome restaurant, and Mrs. E. Randall, have purchased the Rhodes cafe at 512 Second Street from Amos Rhodes. 100 Years Ago, March 23, 1903 In the future passenger conductors on the O.R.& N. (Oregon Railroad & Navigation) will receive about $140 per month instead of $12 and those on freight trains will receive $3.45 per 100 miles instead of $3 as formerly as a 15 percent increase in wages for all freight train employees of the O.R.& N. and ten percent better wages than has in the past been paid to those serving in the passenger branch of the company service has been announced as the result of a conference that has been on for some time in Portland between Superintendent J.P. O'Brien and a committee from the operating department. J.P. Kononen went down to Lyle (Washington) this week and he reports the track laying crew would reach Swale Canyon yesterday. John Martin went down yesterday and says they reached the canyon. Track is now laid within sixteen miles of Centerville (Washington). The Dalles Chronicle March 23, 2003. page B4 (Text Only) Thanks to Nedra Faught, we were able to identify the three folks above. Rather than three sheriffs, we have three brothers: Isaac, Frank and Thomas Driver. The Dalles Chronicle March 16, 2003 Compiled by Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, March 16, 1983 A "historic" statement on principles and key elements to be sought in proposed federal legislation setting up a Columbia River Gorge Commission was signed Tuesday by governors of Oregon and Washington. Governors Vic Atiyeh of Oregon and John Spellman of Washington met in a hotel overlooking the river to sign the joint statement on what they wanted in the way of legislation establishing a commission whose members they would appoint. The governors presented a list of 22 principles and eight key elements they said they wanted in the legislation. 40 Years Ago, March 16, 1963 Dr. John Gilhousen, in his 10th year of service, has announced he does not intend to run for re-election to the District 12 school board this spring. He told the board at its meeting this week that other demands on his time and energy are so great he does not feel justified in seeking another term. Dr. Gilhousen is now serving as board chairman. Silas H. Shotwell, minister of the local Church of Christ, has been awarded the J.W. McGarvey fellowship to do graduate work this summer Abilene Christian College in Abalone, Texas. The fellowship, which is awarded annually to 50 ministers throughout the U.S., provide tuition, room and board for one summer session. A lot of sports fans, nearly a Civic Auditorium full, missed some good amateur bouts when the novice championships were conducted in The Dalles area Friday night. Only a handful, mostly parents and friends, witnessed the 21 bouts. Championship trophies were presented to the winners and second place trophies to the losers. Eddie Sluder and Cotton Light served as referees. 60 Years Ago, March 16, 1943 Six Lions Club members Sunday went to a site near the old ball park and fenced in three lots donated to them for victory garden use by Willis F. Darnielle. Spading of the land thus enclosed already has begun and will be continued each afternoon and on Sundays until the Victory Gardens are completely planted with peas, potatoes, radishes, onion sets or what have you. 80 Years Ago, March 16, 1923 A special St. Patrick's Day program was held this afternoon at St. Mary's Academy in honor of Reverend Patrick J. O'Rourke, pastor of St. Peters Catholic Church whose "name day" it is. 100 Years Ago, March 16, 1903 After being confined to his home for several weeks with erysipelas, grippe and lately rheumatism, J.H. Cross was this morning able to come down to his store, though it was with difficulty that he makes his way around. The family of Reverend D.V. Poling again finds themselves under quarantine rule, Irene, the oldest daughter being the victim of the fever this time. They certainly seem to be having more than their share of the disease. Saturday Miss Anne Haslam, who had for several years been employed as a clerk in the dry goods department of the Edward C. Pease Co., laid aside her duties preparatory to leaving soon for Winnipeg (Canada?) where the Haslam family expects to make their home.
