    3. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through the Chronicle's Files, May 18, 2003. Researched and compiled by Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, May 18, 1983 The Dalles senior center fielder was named to the Mt. Hood Conference softball all league team Monday by a vote of the league coaches, Morgan finished the season batting close to .400 and committed just one error the entire season. The Indians had three players selected to the all league second team. They were senior infielders Katja Ellertson and Kim Johnson and junior pitcher Teri Leavitt. Robert Snyder of School District 12 led all first year drivers during the Oregon annual schoolbus rodeo Saturday in Salem (Oregon). Snyder competed in the novice class for first year drivers. Bonnie Davis and Vern Parmentier also participated. Jo Anne Koch of Sherman County is this year's American Association of University Women's The Dalles Branch scholarship winner. Mrs. Koch, on leave from the Sherman County Extension office, is at Oregon State University and plans to complete her undergraduate studies this August in human development family studies and to complete her master's degree in adult education with a minor in extension methods in March next year. 40 Years Ago, May 18, 1963 A passenger in a light plane was killed and the pilot received critical injuries Friday afternoon in a crash on Chenowith Road about nine miles southwest of The Dalles. Killed instantly when the bright yellow craft gouged a wing into the bank of the northwest side of the road, then crashed upside down on the graveled route that extends up Chenowith Creek was John Gene Smith, 28, The Dalles. Injured was Marquis Wollenweber, about 42. 60 Year Aog, May 18, 1943 Four persons of alien birth were admitted to citizenship by Judge Fred W. Wilson in the circuit court this morning as follows: Nora Elizabeth Eddins, born in England; Antonio Guarniere, born in Italy; John Daniel Thondel and Elfreda Jackson, both born in Germany. Fire of unknown origin, starting under the merchandise on the truck bed, completely destroyed a truck load of machinery, carpenter tools and household goods early this morning on the Columbia River Highway just east of the Country Club. H.R. Robinson, county fire warden, responded with the county fire truck, but was called too late to reach the scene in time to save the load. 80 Years Ago, May 18, 1923 The Gannett motor company of The Dalles was awarded the Gold Star trophy for winning the 100 per cent sales campaign which started six months ago. The award was made at a recent meeting of Ford dealers of Campaign Oregon at which I.D. Jordan, general manager of Portland addressed salesmen on the subject of the new enrollment plan. Forty-eight dealers were present. 100 Years Ago, May 18, 1903 A number of Portland tough lads were from Missouri and got shown a thing or two by our marshal yesterday. While going up Second street indulging in all kinds of oaths and forbidden language, Wood came driving by and ordered them to stop at once or be arrested. When he passed on one of the "smarties" was heard to say "I'd like to see him take me". And he saw it. Wheeling about the marshal grabbed him by the seat of his trousers and swung him onto the horse in front of him while the crowd hooted and follwed in his wake. After he had carried him two blocks amid his petitions for mercy Wood dropped him like a hot potato and he was shown. 3. History Mystery Photo The Dalles Chronicle May 18, 2003 [Text Only] Our mystery for last week proved to be a stumper. None of our history sleuths came up with the correct answer. According to the caption on the picture, this depicts a house situated on a mound at Benton and Laughlin streets which was constructed in 1863 of sandstone quarried from a rimrock ledge to the south. It had 10 rooms, each with a fireplace, and Gothic windows. Colonel J.H. Neyce was the original owner, but lost the place due to bankruptcy. A succession of owners followed, including Henry Marlin, Robert Mays, Hugh Frazier, T.M. Gatch, J.O. Mack, J.M. Russell and H.W.Wells. During times when the house was unoccupied, there were tales of mysterious noises and other strange goings-on. The house finally succumbed to fire in 1905 when shingles from a nearby burning house set the roof ablaze. Though it's been gone nearly a century, while it was around, it was known variously as "The Mays Building," "The Old Stone House," "Neyce's Folly," and, of course, "The Haunted House." For queries regarding the picture, contact Rodger Nichols, 541-506-4603, fax: 541-298-1365 or e-mail rnichols@eaglenewspapers.com. 3. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicle's Files May 25, 2003 20 Years Ago, May 25, 1983 The Wasco County court today is meeting with residents of Antelope (Oregon) before making a decision on a request from the Rajneesh Foundation to back a Rajneesh amendment to the state's land use law. The 1983 legislature made the incorporation of a city a land use matter in that incorporations must comply with land use goals, District Attorney Bernie Smith said at a court meeting this morning. Karla Hendrickson and Dennis Anderson were named outstanding students of the year at Wahtonka High School on Tuesday. The award is sponsored by the Wyam Kiwanis Club and the selections are made by the schools faculty, which considers character, citizenship and service. Joe Brabender was just looking to throw strikes and Brad Snodgrass was just looking for something he could hit. Riverside (Oregon) might have as well been looking for a way out as Brabender and Snodgrass, a pair of seniors with two years of state playoffs experience already behind them, led the Wasco County Redsides to an 8-2 victory over the host Pirates in the CBC district 7-A baseball championship in Boardman (Oregon) Tuesday night. 40 Years Ago, May 25, 1963 District 6B champion Maupin (Oregon) bombed Butte Falls 8-2 in the quarterfinals for the state B championship Friday and now plays Adrian (Oregon) at Adrian next Tuesday night. The Redsides gave up two unearned runs in a shaky first inning, but then senior hurler Lawrence Peetz settled down and held the invaders to one hit the rest of the seven inning game. 60 Years Ago, May 25, 1943 Nine youths and girls yesterday purchased season tickets good at the Dalles city natatorium when it opens for the summer months June 1. Purchasers were Hugh Steers, Alice Sawyer, Gretchen Stiefel, Caroline Stiefel, Mary Welty, Shirley Holmes, Leon Martin, Barbara Martin and Gerry Creswell. The thieves who rifled the Maupin (Oregon) drug store, owned and operated by Estel Stovall, druggist, Sunday night, it was reported today stole nine cases of liquor valued at approximately $750, all of which was the property of the Oregon state liquor commission, for which Stovall is the agent at Maupin. Included in the take were cases of such high priced whiskeys as "Johnny Walker" at $4 a bottle, "Old Granddad" and quantities of gin and rum. The robbery was fully investigated yesterday by the Maupin city police, the state police and the Wasco county sheriff's office, but without any apprehension of the criminals. 80 Years Ago, May 25, 1923 What is believed to have been the premature explosion of a dynamite blast yesterday evening resulted fatally to David Arnold of Lyle (Washington) and in serious injuries to Matt Glavin, Portland contractor, and Clarence Smith, an itinerant laborer. The accident occurred about 7 o'clock, a short distance from Lyle when the three were engaged in working on the construction of the north bank highway. United Artisans will hold a national convention in this city September 2,3 and 4 according to an announcement made by L.L. Alden, special representative of the lodge, who is at present here in the interests of the membership of the local assembly. Members of the Boy Scouts organization of The Dalles will leave tonight to the top of the Klickitats, just beyond Goldendale (Washington). The party will be under the leadership of Bruce H. Hull, principal of the East Hill school and will assemble at the Libby, McNeill & Libby at 5 o'clock. A huge bonfire will be built on the mountain at 9 o'clock it was stated. The return trip will be made tomorrow. 100 Years Ago, May 25, 1903 The play of Evangeline was put on the boards at the Armory on May 16 and was entirely satisfactory to the well filled house, yet the promoter, a Mr. Kendall, went off the fresh fields and failed to liquidate his advertising bill. Nine of Oscar Beck's friends surprised him last night by calling at his residence and reminding that they were aware of the fact that he is growing older and has reached the interesting age of 20 yesterday. Though he was greatly surprised, Oscar had the presence of mind to invite them in and they spent the evening at Flinch, refreshments following. The boys and girls who celebrated with Oscar were Ellen McCoy, Raezola Cluff, Loto Kelsey, Cornelia Wilson, Mark Rorick, Hallie Rice, Joe McInerny and Paul McCoy. Miss Bailey won the Beta Sigma Phi Plate and Sawyer got the Kiwanis Club award and both seniors won May Barnum Memorial Scholarships. In addition to the top award both of the top seniors were named as Oregon Scholars for the classes of 1983. The Dalles may receive a $75,000 grant from the state to pay for engineering studies on remedies for the slide area. Governor Vic Atiyeh's community relations representative, Bob Montgomery, toured the slide area on Tuesday with City Manager Del Cesar. Montgomery decided to have the state technical people inspect the area next week to determine whether the project qualifies for state assistance. Mark Williamson has been appointed Advertising Director of The Dalles Chronicle-Columbia Week, Steve Bennett, publisher of the newspapers announced today. 40 Years Ago, May 11, 1963 Two Hood River (Oregon) men drowned in a murky Columbia River slough near Rowena (Oregon) Friday night after their skiff capsized as they were tying a line to a wooden pile about 200 feet from shore. The victims, who apparently had intended to go fishing, were Jim Powers, 69, and his son-in-law, Joe Arbuckle, 35. James Kimball of The Dalles today was announced as winner of one of the $200 scholarships awarded in the 17th annual Oregon AFL0CIO scholarship contest. The award was made on the basis of a competitive examination on labor and industrial problems and scholastic achievement. Keith Gallaher and Cliff Piland combined to shoot a 141 and win the blind partners with handicap play Thursday at The Dalles Country Club. Three teams tied for second with 143, including John Re and Fred Yeager, Lane Heisler and Bob Twiss and Hank Maier and Hank Smith. 60 Years Ago, May 11, 1943 Norman W. Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.G. His course, which will last five months, will cover academic courses as well as elementary flying training. Upon his successful completion of the course he will be appointed an avaiation cadet in the A.A.F. The Misses Myrtle Baker and Mildred Baker, known in The Dalles as the Baker twins, are to be graduated Saturday afternoon, May 16, in the 1943 class of the Deaconess school of nursing at the Deaconess hospital in Spokane (Washington). A reception for the 31 members of the class and their friends will be held after the exercises. 80 Years Ago, May 11, 1923 The accidental explosion of a box of dynamite caps while he was engaged in blasting holes in the ground for grape planting yesterday, cost Fred E. Evans of Mosier (Oregon) the loss of one eye, deafness in one ear and general body injuries from flying cartridge metal. Evans was at once taken to The Dalles hospital, where Dr. J.A. Reuter last night removed one eye, which was rendered sightless by flying copper from the caps. By unanimous vote at the 15th annual convention of the Oregon Retail jewelers' association in Portland, May 10, W.F. Boettcher, jeweler of this city was elected president of the association for the coming year. 100 Years Ago, May 11, 1903 Saturday, Mr. and Mrs. S.S. Smith disposed of their new house on the hill, just west of the East Hill school, to Mr. and Mrs. John Berry of High Prairie, Klickitat county (Washington). The consideration for the house and 12 lots were $3,000, the Smiths retaining three lots that they may again build if they so desire when they return from their trip east. Saturday, Mrs. Temple, who has bought out the millinery business of Mrs. Christians took possession of the business and is now engaged in rearranging the store preparatory to putting out her new stock. She has an entire new stock and will continue to receive new goods. From what we learn of Mrs. Temple she is a first class milliner and one deserving the best patronage this city can afford. 3. The Dalles Chronicle May 4, 2003 Compiled by Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, May 4, 1983 A fragile bipartisan coalition of Oregon and Washington lawmakers is preparing to introduce a rival piece of legislation to protect the Columbia River Gorge, claiming it will provide more local control and less federal involvement than an earlier bill introduced by Oregon Republican Senator Bob Packwood. Dr. Roger A. Crebbs of George Fox College has been named president pro-tempore at Judson Baptist College (The Dalles) to replace Dr. Robert Anderson who retires from the presidency on June 30. Dr. Crebbs is the chairman of business and economic at George Fox. School District 12 directors Tuesday night completed the first five interviews for a replacement for Superintendent George Yertson who has announced his retirement effective June 30. Board president Ann Bryant said that the board had selected six candidates for interviews, that one has withdrawn and the other five have been interviewed. A total of 33 applied and a screening committee recommended ten for interviews. 40 Years Ago, May 4, 1963 Alice Kaseberg of Wasco (Oregon) and Joe Monohan of Condon (Oregon) are among the 21 4-H Club members chosen to attend the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago next November. Five more youths from Oregon may get to attend if their records impress 4-H judges in Chicago. Miss Kaseberg, a 10-year 4-H members, was chosen for her work in the swine program. A Sherman County grand jury session Thursday and Friday resulted in a first degree murder indictment against Jake C. Gross, 61, of Wasco (Oregon) and a second degree murder charge against Dolphus L. Baker, 53 of Rufus (Oregon). The two men were arraigned before circuit judge E. Howell yesterday afternoon and later transported to the Wasco County jail (The Dalles). Mrs. Ben Koch and Mrs Joe Hillis will meet in the finals of the championship flight of the women's annual Spring Handicap at The Dalles Country Club. Mrs. Koch defeated Mrs. Joe McNaught and Mrs. Hillis defeated Mrs. James Odell in the semifinals. 60 Years Ago, May 4, 1943 Kenneth H. Ferguson, principal of the Whittier junior high school (The Dalles) tendered his resignation to become effective at the end of this school year. He stated that he had been elected principal of the senior high school at Cottage Grove (Oregon), a school of approximately the same enrollment as the local high school. Ferguson came to The Dalles School system from Juneau, Alaska four years since. George S. Grant, Yeoman third class in the U.S. Navy, today was transferred from the Portland office to be first assistant at the naval recruiting substation in The Dalles to M.A. Tague, in charge of The Dalles area. Grant replaces A1 Woods, who after one years service as assistant to Tague, left last Saturday to become an aviation cadet. Miss Shirley Spickerman, popular Dalles soprano who has been attending school in Portland, will be presented in recital at The Dalles high school auditorium on the evening of Saturday, May 15, by Miss Irene Moore of Portland, formerly of The Dalles High School faculty. 80 Years Ago, May 4, 1923 Candidates who leave tomorrow morning to attend the large Shrine ceremonial at Salem (Oregon) over the weekend are as follow: John Milne, L.B. Bolton, Roy Taylor, Ben F. Clouse, Niel McFadden, Duff McAndies and T.B. Phillips. Mrs. Milne and Mrs. Phillips were also to accompany them. Lois Aldrich, the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.N. Aldrich of 414 W. Ninth Street, has received notification from the Portland Chamber of Commerce, Associated Industries Department that she has been awarded the first prize amounting to $15 for the best 500-word essay on Oregon manufacturers. 100 Years Ago, May 4, 1903 Mrs. Henry Snipes, who lives up in the pines back of the city, was a victim of a serious case of ptomaine poison yesterday which came near proving fatal. With some neighbors the Snipes family went picnicking down near Snipes lake yesterday morning. In the picnic lunch was some canned goods, which proved to be a poor diet for Mrs. Snipes and her little daughter were brought home ill, the former seriously so Dr. Geisendorffer was called and gave remedies usual in such cases. Today she is reported out of danger. Among the foolish, unfounded reports in circulation concerning the smallpox situation in Shaniko (Oregon) is one that a clerk in the Edward C. Peace (Pease) store there deceased. There is not a word of truth in the report, the clerks all being in good health, with not a fear of the smallpox, since it is crushed out there. 3. The Dalles Chronicle May 4, 2003 (Text Only) Just about everybody knew that the sheriff featured in last week's paper was Harold Sexton, who served from 1939 to 1953, and later became a U.S. Marshall. His father, Felix Sexton, had been sheriff 1902-1906. Correct guessers included......Rick Cantrell (a former sheriff himself). Loye Ann May remembered the beautiful horse. Maggie Brown recalled him riding the horse up Cherry Heights Road and Mary Carol Wallace said her uncle Joe Henricks was a former deputy.
