    3. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through the Chronicle's Files June 22, 2003 researched and compiled each week by Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, June 22, 1983 New Judson Baptist College President Dr. Roger Crabbs Tuesday laid out a plan that he and his management team hope will make The Dlles "one of the educational centers of the Northwest>" The management team, which includes Crabbs, presidential academic administrator Dr. Neil Roth, presidential fiscal administrator Rudolph Resnick and development consultant Larson Ross, presented a five year development plan at a press conference. Members of the Jackson Engine Company, No. 1, made a strong showing at the Milwaukie (Oregon) Daze Firemen's Muster last weekend. The company also took some new equipment - a 1918 Americn LaFrance fire truck that had been purchased by city fireman Charles Norris for use by the muster club. The truck won two trophies its first time out and the team took firsts in two categories. The Northwest Open Masters Decathlon will be held July 8-9 at the Wahtonka (The Dalles) High School track. The meet is being hosted by Wahtonka football and girls track and field coach Buck Gent, who is a nationally ranked age group decathelete. 40 Years Ago, June 22, 1963 A panel from which the jury will be chosen for the first degree murder trial of Jake G. Goss will report Monday in Wasco County Circuit Court, Judge Edward H. Howell of Canyon City (Oregon) presiding. The charges were brought against the 66-year-old in Sherman County on May 4 as the result of the death April 14 of Frank Edward Finnegan, 43. Finnegan died in a bunkhouse at the Fred Dormaier ranch, east of Wasco (Oregon) where both men were employed. County Weed Control Officer Grant Mead attacked poison oak areas at three public stair and walkways from the lower to higher levels of town recently in an effort to eliminate the hazard in the city. C. Dean Smith, city manager reports. Amitrol-T was used at the Harrison Street trail, the stairway leading up the Fourth Street grade and at the Washington Street-Scenic Drive trail. 60 Years Ago, June 22, 1943 The Dalles war price and rationing board last night revoked the right of a Clair Brace, a minor, to get any more gasoline for the duration of the war as a result of promiscuous motoring in a car bearing an "A" sticker, the gasoline for which was obtained, it was stated on coupons illegally used. These coupons, board members said today, were taken by the son of a service station operator from his father's stack of used ration coupons, then used by Brace, and it is alleged, other youths who spent much of their time driving hundreds, perhaps thousands of miles with gasoline this illegally obtained, in defiance of all war restrictions on the use of gasoline. 80 Years Ago, June 22, 1923 Friends received word here today that Richard P. Strahl, a graduate of the class of 1916 at The Dalles High Schhol, was graduated from the college of denistry at North Pacific college in June and successfully passed the Oregon State Board examinations. Additional bee licenses were taken out at the office of the county clerk yesterday and include the following apiarists: W.H. Reams, E.C. Beck, E.F. Sharp, G.R. Walton, E.C. Malloy, J. Kaser, D. Cochran and B.H. Hayes. 3. History Mystery Photo The Dalles Chronicle June 22, 2003 page A10 With the news earlier in the week about the wind-driven collapse of the 100-year-old Klondike School, we thought most people would guess last week's mystery photo. Instead, only Doris Fleck and Gordon Hilderbrand knew that it was a picture of the Klondike School student body for the 1907-08 school year. Mr. Hilderbrand was kind enough to send along a photocopy from a Serman County Historical Society publication which reporduced the phot and identified most of the students: Back row left to right: "Elner Helyer, Thelma Anson, John Mattias, Teacher Miss Banmber, unknown, unknown, unknown. Middle row......Sylvia girl, Ross Hilderbrand with left hand on desk and Andy Walter with right hand on desk." The publication also said this about the school: "Klondike School was built of brick obtained in Goldendale, Washington by George Hilderbrand who lived nearby. It is the only brick country school in the county and was ready for use in 1907 and last used in 1932." We were sorry to see a part of Sherman County's history topple -- perhaps it passed the torch of landmark to the slowly turning blades of the nearby wind farm. 3. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicle's Files June 8, 2003 researched and assembled by Elroy King 20 Year Ago, June 8, 1983 The Antelope City Council, heavily dominated by followers of Rajneshee unanimously passed an ordinance "setting aside city property for relaxation and recreation without wearing clothing." The public nudity ordinance proposed by council member Ma Deva Parmita and passed Tuesday night, states that "the people of Antelope believe that the human body is beautiful" and that residents "wish to regain their innocence and get in touch with themselves and nature and learn to accept themselves totally as they are." The Schultens Motors Columbia Gorge Hustlers found themselves in a wild game last night as they defeated David Douglas 25-22 in American Legion action. The Hustlers, who officially became the Ray Schultens Motors Hustlers yesterday, played a game of tu-of-war with Douglas before finally shutting down their hosts in the last three innings and taking the victory. There were 47 runs, 32 base hits and 11 errors in the game and every starting Hustler had at least on RBI, with Max Clizer leading the way in that department with seven. 40 Years Ago, June 8, 1963 Cara Linn Wheeler, who was graduated this week from The Dalles High School, received a scholarship award this week from the Ford Foundation to study ballet at the San Francisco Ballet School for eight weeks this summer, beginning July 8. She will be taking instruction from Harold and Lew Christensen, brothers of William Christensen, head of the University of Utah ballet department in which Cara Linn will enroll this September. Dave Schreiber of Maupin (Oregon) has received a $3,000 half time research assistantship at Washington State University, PUllman (Washington), in agricultural engineering starting in September. Schreiber will work toward his master's degree while at WSU, where his special field of study will be soils and water. Jim Peterson's Chenowith Bulldogs (The Dalles) had a near perfect season this year with a 9-1 record, the loss being to the junior high school eighth graders. With that team, however, Chenowith won four out of five games. The Chenowith sluggers scored 51 runs on 43 hits to 28 runs and 26 hits by the opponents. 60 Years Ago, June 8, 1943 Marvin L. Markman of The Dalles and Wesley R. Ross of Wamic (Oregon) received B.S. degrees in engineering at the commencement exercises held May 29 at Oregon State College. Melvin A. Look of The Dalles received a B.S. in agriculture and Miss E. Ruth received a B.S. in secretarial science. Roy Darnielle of Gresham (Oregon), brother of Willis Darnielle of this city, is in The Dalles today in connection with his purchase of the D.S. Doyle grain and stock farm on Eight Mile Creek. The ranch already produces wheat, cherries, cows and hots and Darnielle states he intends to improve it further. Miss Margaret McDermid, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. McDermid of Wasco (Oregon) was graduated on Friday from the Oregon College of Education at Monmouth (Oregon). She received the degree of bachelor of science in elementary education and has signed a contract to teach next year at Oswego (Oregon). 80 Years Ago, June 8, 1923 Roscoe Krier and Griffith Williams started at 4 o'clock this morning on a bicycle trip to Portland. The boys were to make the city in two days time, reaching Cascade Locks tonight where they will make camp. A telephone call from Hood River about the middle of the morning assured their parents here that they were having a fine outing and keeping with the schedule. When in Portland they will visit at the home of Griffith's grandmother, Mrs. John Goss, and enjoy the Rose Festival. Four of the best golfers in the Pacific Northwest, Rudolph Wilhelm, Russell Smith, Walter Nash and Bill Handley, will play exhibition matches at The Dalles Country Club Sunday afternoon, as a result of arrangements made by local directors of the club. 100 Years Ago, JUne 8, 1903 A serious accident happened to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hunter last week at Mosier (Oregon). They had filled a beer keg with unslaked lime and afterwards poured in water when an explosion occurred and they both almost completely lost their eyesight. They were taken to Portland yesterday to ascertain whether or not anything can be done for them. Homer Angell, of whose record Dallesites are proud, returned this morning from New York, where he has just finished his course at Columbia college and received the degree of LL.B. {Bachelor of Laws}. As yet his plans for the future are not yet formulated. He expects, however, to wait until fall before entering his profession and will no doubt spend the summer on a surveying trip. Yes, Kenneth's wife Fern still lives in Indianola as does Kent Amsberry. Marvin has been a mystery to this family because he disappeared sometime in the late 1940's and was never seen or heard from again. At the time his mother, my great aunt Leona Amsberry died no one was able to locate him. Marvin did make some sort of attempt to contact the family sometime in the 1950's....he sent a letter to his brother Kenneth but Kenneth was dead then and Fern could not sign for the letter. I will forward the information you gave me on to Kent Amsberry as I'm certain he would be more than happy to have it. Again...thank you. Jacci Runyan

My records from "The William A. Amsberry and related families" book states that Marvin was born in Eping, ND, though Iowa would make more sense. His brother Kenneth's wife resided in Indianola, Iowa in 1970 at the time of this book. They had a son Kent Amsberry born 9/20/1948. Maybe he knows something about his Uncle Marvin.

Jane Rolfe of Grass Valley (Oregon) said her uncle, Fred Wegener, was the driver, and that Bessie, who was very popular with the citizens of The Dalles, was so proficient, she often made the right stops without being told. Moody bought her from the freight company and she retired to his comfortable farm, where she received the best of care.
