    1. [ORHOODRI] The Dalles Daily Chronicle, Tuesday, July 23, 1895
    2. Earline Wasser
    3. The Dalles Daily Chronicle, Tuesday, July 23, 1895 BRIEF MENTION Leaves From the Notebook of Chronicle Reporters Antone Bowers has just purchased a Craver & Steele header. There has been a great deal of farming machinery sold this year in The Dalles. A.J. Douglas, a prosperous farmer near Dufur (Oregon), has bought a J.I. Case threshing machine. Yesterday afternoon a man started to see how fast he could ride up Second street and rode into the arms of Marshal Blakeney, who was waiting for him. The city was $5 richer when the officer got through with him. There is some merit in a scheme for the city to rent Second street during the quiet hours of the day for $5 a ride. It would help to pay the interest coupons. Judd Fish will soon make his debut on the streets astride of the latest improved bicycle. He has been faithfully practicing for several weeks on a private track under the Umatilla House and the facility he shows in learning proves he has a great future before him as a bycyclist (sp). Due notice of his appearance will be given later at which time Henry Fowler will retire from the contest. The fruit raisers are busy shipping their products today. The street in front of the fruit warehouse has been crowded with teams all day and Manager Pinkham has had his hands full attending to the receipts. A car for Denver leaves The Dalles tonight, loaded with blackberries, peaches, peach plums and apricots. Fruit raisers are waiting anxiously to hear returns from the car that went Saturday. The preliminary examination of John Dalrymple is being held today in Justice Davis' court. This evening, if the Dalrymple case is finished, the trial of Lane Mahaffy, who is charged with issuing fictitious checks, will be held. Tomorrow the case of the State vs Myron Taft, arrested for stealing grain, will occur so it can be seen that the justice court is keeping up with the revival that is talked so much about in other lines of business. The city marshal received a telegram from Sheriff Houser at Pendleton (Oregon) asking him to try and arrest two boys who would probably pass through The Dalles. The boys had gone through before the telegram reached here, but today Policeman Connelly arrested George Gillenbach, Andrew Anderson and Charlie James, three young boys who have started to see the world. They will be detained until word can be received from Pendleton. The board of fire delegates held a special meeting last evening in the city hall. The meeting was called to chose (sp) judges and clerks for the coming fireman's election and to make all necessary arrangements. The election will be held August 5th and the polling place will be in the engine house. The board chose as judges John W. Lewis, R.B. Sinnott and Matt Shoren while George Gibons and Fred Van Norden will serve as clerks. No candidates have yet been announced for chief of the department. During the absence of Captain Waud, who will be away during part of the week, Captain McNulty is in charge of the "Regulator". He looks well in his accustomed place and old travelers find it very natural to see him as they come aboard the boat. Captain McNulty carries a handsome gold watch presented by Capt. J.C. Ainsworth and the directors of the O.S.N.Co. for good seamanship shown while in command of the old "Idaho". It is a beautiful trophy and the manner and reason for which it was given can well make any man feel proud. MOSIER BREEZES What Our Correspondent Has To Say About Happenings In Mosier Neighborhood James Carroll and wife, and A.B. Craft went to Portland this week to visit friends there. Mr. Paul Howard of Eugene City (Oregon) is visiting his aunt, Mrs. Mosier. He is on his way to Harney (Oregon). Mrs. Taylor from Three Mile and children are here visiting her relatives. Mr. Earnie Moore and wife, Wm. Powell and Miss Mary Powell of Moro (Oregon), encamped near Mosier creek bridge last Saturday night. They were on their way home from Trout lake (Washington). They report a good time. Mr. Wm. Phillips' wife and child are up from Portland visiting friends and relatives. Reverend Stark of this place is home again. He has been preaching at Oysterville, Washington but having to come home he resigned his charge. Everybody is glad to see him back. He preached last Sunday at schoolhouse in district No. 52 just after Sunday school. PERSONAL MENTION Mr. B.F. Laughlin went to Portland in today's local. Ex-Governor Z.F. Moody is in the city today from Salem (Oregon). Mr. A.E. Bevans of Nelson, Skamania county (Washington) is in the city. Mr. James Whitten, a resident of Antelope (Oregon), is in the city. Mr. O.B. Harley, a merchant of Hood River (Oregon), is in town today. Mr. H. Herbring returned on the boat last night from Stevenson (Washington). 3. History Mystery Photo The Dalles Chronicle June 15, 2003 (Text Only) Barney Ross, Terray Harmon and Jake Grossmiller all knew that the house pictured above was the Edward C. Pease house, located on Fourth Street here the parking lot for U.S. National bank is today (just west of dentist Doug Reid's office). Ross said his grandmaother Pearl Cheney worked for Mr. Pease in his Pease & Moody department store in The Dalles (located where Craig Office Supply is today) Ross also said his wife dusted the house in her youth because her aunt, Osa Gillette, was cook and housekeeper. The house had a ballroom on the third floor. It was torn down in 1963. 3. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through the Chronicle's Files July 13, 2003 researched and assembled from the Chronicle archives each week by Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, July 13, 1983 Despite strong opposition from two school board members and most of the audience; the District 9 board voted 3-2 at a special meeting Tuesday night to change a proposal it had earlier on the cost of District 12 using Sid White football field. The new proposal kept the flat $250 fee per game but eliminated $1,000 in money or material toward a new broadcast booth at the field. County Commissioner Rick Cantrell announced today he was resigning effective August 10 to accept a missionary assisgnment for his church. Cantrell served four years as Wasco County judge and on November 2, 1982 was elected to a four year term as commissioner. 40 Years Ago, July 13, 1963 Dedication of the new gymnasium and convent of St. Mary's Academy will take place with ceremonies the afternoon of Sunday, July 21. Principal speakers will be Most Reverend Francis P. Leipzig, bishop of the Baker (Oregon) diocese. Various other deignitaries will gather for the occasion. The Reverend Virgil Brown, new minister at the Evangelical United Brethren Church, replaces the Reverend Roy Erford, who left for Los Angeles in June to do graduate work toward his doctorate degree. Reverend Brown has previously served churches in Reardon, Washington, for two years and in Colfax, Washington. 60 Years Ago, July 13, 1943 The Pines Dairy, largest fluid milk supplier in the local areas, will go out of business July 15 it was announced today by Mrs. Gladys L. Rogers, owner. Inability to operate under the OPA milk price ceiling, plus a serious shortage of experienced help, motivated the decision to quit, Mrs. Rogers explained. The Pines Dairy has been in business her for 18 years. Construction work on the second story of the administration building at The Dalles airport began last Friday in a small way but "really got underway yesterday:, according to Councilman Paul Weigalt today. The necessary lumber is on the ground, and the contractor and carpenters are pushing work on the building, which when finished will be occupied by the civil aeronautics administration personnel, now housed at the old airport field and by the S & M Flying Service of Portland, which leased the field for commercial and civilian flying last week. 80 Years Ago, July 13, 1923 Amid a great tribute of flowers and in the solemn confines of the First Congregational Church, last rites for Mrs. P.J. Stadelman, wife of Mayor Stadelman, were held this afternoon at 3 o'clock. The church was packed with friends and relatives of the deceased. All stores and business houses of the city were closed between the hours of 2:30 and 4 o'clock this afternoon during the ceremonies in reverence to the departed woman, who was held high in the esteem. With a change in the management of the Franklin Motor care company and the addition of two men in the repair shop, announcement of a policy of "better service" to Franklin and Star car owners was made yesterday. H.F. Murch who has been with the Portland Motor car company for the past three years has taken over management and George Kerr has been engaged as bookkeeper for the company. 100 Years Ago, July 13, 1903 Saturday Judge Sears overruled the motion of Martin V. Leasia for a new trial and sentenced the convicted murderer of his father in law, Ferdinand H. Drews, to imprisonment for life. Thirty days were allowed the prisoner's attorneys Murray and Watts, in which to prepare and file a bill of exception. Those who have made the trip to Mt. Hood over the Barlow route or from Portland, will remember Hector Campbell, who kept the Summit House. A visitor to that place last Wednesday found his dead body in his isolated store, where he had died alone and unattended. The coroner of Clackamas county investigated the case and found that death resulted from natural causes. Interment was made in Portland. 3. History Mystery Photo (Text Only) "We had a huge response to last week's photo, and no surprise. This is one of the most famous photos taken in the area. When it appeared in The Chronicle, it was headlined "Remarkable Rescue." The incident took place on September 7, 1952 at Celilo Falls. Eight-year-old Danny Sampson, a Yakima Tribal fisher, fell from his platform upriver. Archie Bushman, of the Umatilla Tribe, was fishing on a downriver platform and used his dipnet to pull Sampson to safety. The photo was taken by Robert L. Wheeler, founder of Wheeler's Electronics in The Dalles an amateur photographer who happened to be on the scene that day. "Life" magazine used a slightly different shot from the same roll of film as its cover, calling it "miraculous." Celilo Falls, 12 miles upstream from The Dalles, was covered by the waters impounded behind The Dalles Dam at the completion of the dam in 1957. We heard from many people, including Kristina (Sampson) McConville who said Sampson was her father's older brother and that he has since passed on. Joe George sent this message: "I was fishing at Celilo the day it was taken, about 100 yards downstream, but I didn't know of it until I got back to my car at the Celilo Cafe a few hours later. I didn't think much about it as one or more Indians would fall in each summer during the big fall run. Footing was wet and slippery. The scaffolds were rickety, making it very tricky footing." Willis Goldsten said his father and older brother were both at the falls that day and saw the whole thing." 3. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through the Chronicle's Files July 6, 2003 Looking Back is edited and compiled each week from the files of The Dalles Chronicle by Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, July 6, 1983 The Dalles City Recreation Commission will have five members named by the city council instead of two named by the council, District 12 school and the county. An ordinance passed Tuesday night by the council authorizes the appointment of five members instead of six, and Mayor John Lundell said those people now serving on the commission would continue if they chose to do so. The Dalles City Council Tuesday adopted after modification a proclamation in support of the Mid-Columbia Chapter of the National Organization of Women. Katie Young, a member of the organization, presented the resolution and asked for the city's criteria in passing it. Hazel Phillips, recently retired owner of Hazel Phillips Travel, The Dalles, has been named a member of Amtrak's select Golden Spike Society. The agency is one of less than 400 of Amtrak's 8,700 authorized travel agents given special recognition for a "unique contribution toward the promotion of rail passenger service." 40 Years Ago, July 6, 1963 Donnell's Drug Store, founded here in 1895 by M.Z. Donnell, was sold the first of the month to Joe Burns of Yakima (Washington), who also owns Davies Drug Company in The Dalles. The store was opened here after Donnell sold a drug store in Goldendale (Washington). When the elder Donnell retired, his son, Merrill Donnell assumed ownership and ran the store until his death in October, 1959. His widow was the operator of the business at the time of the sale. Burns says he plans to operate the store at the same location at Second and Washington (streets). 60 Years Ago, July 6, 1943 Donald E. Heisler, state representative from Wasco County, left his home in The Dalles today for Fort Douglas, Utah. Although draft exempt because of his legislative duties, Heisler volunteered for service and was inducted June 22 at Spokane (Washington). He spent the last fortnight closing his business affairs here and announced that unfinished items of business may be take up with W.M. Wilkinson, local attorney. A Wamic (Oregon) rancher, George Nelson, was judged best all-around cowboy at the eighth annual St. Paul (Oregon) rodeo which ended last night. He won the wild horse race and was second in the wild cow milking, bronc riding and bull dogging. 80 Years Ago, July 6, 1923 Wasco County authorities this morning decided to construct the Wrentham (Oregon) Market road without letting a contract and Roadmaster P.W. Marx will commence this work as soon as ordered to do so by the county court. At the present time there is a question as to the advisability in beginning the construction now or waiting until after the harvest season is over. Marx estimated that the road would cost in the neighborhood of $62,400 and based this as a reasonable bid for contractors. Alicense to operate the open air dance pavilion on the highway west of The Dalles was granted this morning to E.T. Hicks and Ward Webber by the county court. Heretofore the pavilion had been licensed by the city and the proprietors were informed last night by the council that the premises were outside the city. 100 Years Ago, July 6, 1903 While the accidents to the floats in the night parade were deplorable, since it almost spoiled an excellent display of the best The Dalles has ever seen, they might be said to have been lucky after all no serious injuries resulted. A report from Miss Barnett today says that while she was badly bruised on the right side, no bones were broken and she will be about in a few days. 3. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through the Chornicle's Files June 29, 2003. Looking Back is researched and compiled each week by Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, June 29, 1983 The amount paid for legal services by the Northern Wasco County PUD came under fire at the PUD commissioners meeting Tuesday night. Hazel Phillips, who said she was appearing only as a PUD ratepayer, asked for an accounting of the legal fees for PUD, particularily those paid to Stan Heisler, the attorney for the local PUD. A team from The Dalles brought the Sasquatch Fours golf championship back to town with a victory in the two-day, 36 hole event held at The Dalles Country Club. Bobbie Griffiths, Dolores Smith, Fumi Sato and Bev McKinney combined for a low net score of 264 to beat another The Dalles team by three strokes. 40 Years Ago, June 29, 1963 The new Zoning Improvement Program (Zip) of the Post Office Department will go into use Monday throughout the nation, Acting Postmaster James Sandoz pointed out today. It is a five-digit system (the number for The Dalles is 97058) designed "to speed mail delivery by cutting down on the number of steps required to move mail from sender to addressee" Sandoz said. The Wasco County Democratic Central Committee re-elected three offices Friday night, including Robert Welty as chairman, Mrs. Charles Wilson as vice-chairman and Georg Wernmark, treasurer. Mrs. Otis Sheets was named as secretary, succeeding Alvina Morris. 60 Years Ago, June 29, 1943 The two county fire trucks, in charge of H.R. Robinson of Rowena (Oregon), and Herbert Morrow, road foreman at Wasco (Oregon), were called at 3:16 Monday afternnon to help extinguish a fire on 12 acres of brush pasture land owned by J.E. Kennedy, three miles south of Wamic. 80 Years Ago, June 29, 1923 A special meeting has been arranged to take place tonight at the Chamber of Commerce for the purpose of organizing The Dalles branch of the Oregon State Motor association. Business men generally have been invited to meet with A.H. Lee, president, and Fred DeElliott, field secretary of the Oregon State Motor association, who are in the city to complete arrangements. Through a transaction which was completed yesterday, C.S. Hampton of Pendleton (Oregon) purchased the Hackett-Gott furniture from D. Gott, possession by Mr. Hampton taking effect immediately. The new owner of this well known local business establishment is a furniture man of long experience. Mr. Hampton recently sold his half interest in the Cruickshank-Hampton of Pendleton. Following the disposal of his Pendleton business, Mr. Hampton visited many points in the northwest looking for a location. 100 Years Ago, June 29, 1903 A distressing accident in which Fred Foster, one of the deck hands on the steamer Dalles City lost his life, occurred near Bingen (Washington) landing yesterday. It appears that he was scuffling with a fellow, and attempted to run around the yard rail, when he missed his footing and fell overboard. The alarm was immediately given and a boat lowered, but before assistance could reach him he sank and no trace could be found of him. Andy Baldwin, who for a number of years had been proprietor of the Baldwin saloon in The Dalles, has purchased the Columbia Hotel and will take charge of the same tomorrow. Mr. Baldwin is well and favorably known throughout Eastern Oregon and when formerly in business was one of the most popular men in that line, and that he will make a success of the venture is a safe prediction. 3. History Mystery Photo The Dalles Chronicle June 29, 2003 (Text Only) Sharp-eyed readers with long memories recognized last week's mystery photo, as the warehouse for the Wasco County Grain Growers, a cooperative managed by Louis J. Kelly The warehouse was constructed west of The Dlles in 1937 to take advantage of barge shipment of bulk grain made possible by construction of Bonneville Dam. Sacked wheat was emptied into the elevator, and from there discharged into waiting barges in the river below. The elevator was sold to Kerr Gifford company in the early 1950s and then to Cargill, Inc. in 1955. Wes Ranslam e-mailed that he worked in the elevator "first in 1967 briefly and then worked in it for 35 years from 1959 to 1994." Former Wasco County Judge Bill Hulse said he helped build the structure, working for carpenter Fred Bolander.
