The Dalles Daily Chronicle, Monday, July 8, 1895 page two DEATH OF HONORABLE J.C. MURPHY To The Editor: - Honorable J. C. Murphy died at his home near Antelope [Oregon] this morning at 7 oclock of concussion of the brain, caused by injuries received in a runaway July 4th. At that time Mr. Murphy was in good health, and driving, in company with E.M. Shutt, in his open cart, to see the races. Just before reaching the race track his horse became frightened and ran away, breaking the cart and throwing the occupants out, Mr. Murphy alighting on his head. He was considerably stunned, but nothing serious was thought of it at the time, as he rode his horse home that evening and made but little complaint as to any pain; but next morning he became unconscious. Dr. Pilkington was hastily summoned, and worked faithfully with him for twenty-two hours, but of no avail; he remained unconscious most of the time. At 5 oclock this morning he rallied for a short time and bade his family good bye, soon sinking again into unconsciousness, after which the end soon came quietly and peacefully. Mr. Murphy leaves a wife and six children living, thirteen grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn his loss. His wife and two children, Creed and Mrs. Clark, and several grandchildren were with him when death came. His daughter, Mrs. Wiley of The Dalles, has been sent for, and is expected to arrive in time to attend the funeral at Antelope tomorrow at 2 p.m. His eldest son, Charley, and his two youngest children, Ed and Fanny, are visiting near Silverton [Oregon], and do not yet know the sad misfortune which has befallen them; while two daughters, Mrs. McGreer and a little girl, preceded their father to the grave. Mr. Murphy has lived on his ranch adjoining town for over seventeen years. He was among the early settlers, was widely known and universally esteemed. Mr. Murphy has been a life-long republican, an earnest, consistent worker and had a state reputation for his sound principals. He was a delegate to the late state convention, and was the father-in-law of Honorable Henry McGreer, joint representative for Wasco and Sherman county. Mr. Murphy was a political writer of considerable note, and contributed slmost weekly to the political columns of the local papers. He was also a speaker of great ability at all conventions and public gatherings. In disposition he was kind and jovial, having a pleasant word for all and malice toward none. Many a heart will be saddened by the news of his sudden death. The entire community sympathizes with the bereaved family, for in his death they lose a kind and loving husband and father, and the country one of its most highly honored and respected citizens. He was upwards of 60 years of age, but was in good health, with the prospect of many years of life still before him. Peace to his memory. Signed Hornette Antelope, July 6, 1895. ACCIDENT IN THE DESCHUTES To The Editor: - Two gentlemen named John Ludwick and Adolph Haimen, respectively, attempted to cross the Deschutes in a canoe on July 4th. The canoe capsized and both men were thrown into the swift water. Ludwick has not been found. Adolph Haimen swam down the stream about two miles and finally reached the land. The men had been in Sherman county looking for work. Signed G. Victor, July 5th. AN OCCULIST OF EXPERIENCE Dr. J.P. Lewenberg, an eye specialist of 25 years experience, is now at the Umatilla House [The Dalles] where he will examine eyes for defective vision. He uses only the latest and approved methods in the examination of the eyes. He asks no questions of the patient, but reads the interior of the eye with the ophthalmoscope as you would a book. All defects of vision are corrected by carefully prepared lenses. He invites physicians and scientific people to investigate his method. No charge for examination. Childrens eyes examined and rating given in printed form available for school purposes free of charge. All who suffer with headache, dizziness or pain in eyes are invited to call and have the eyes examined. If you have glasses that make your eyes ache bring them to me and I will show you the cause. Dr. Lewenberg is not a spectacle peddler nor traveling optician, but was compelled by ill health to leave a lucrative practice of 20 years at Philadelphia and seek health in this genial clime. He takes this method of acquainting himself with the people of this coast for his future home. BRIEF MENTION page three Leaves From the Notebook of Chronicle Reporters. Mr. Frank Chase, whose place is about four miles from town, made final proof before the land office today. Reverend C.P. Bailey, of the First Baptist church of Prineville [Oregon], preached at the Calvary Baptist church of this city, yesterday morning and evening. He will preach again this evening at 7:30. All are cordially welcomed. A small party was given in honor of little Carmel Bolton this afternoon, at the residence of Mrs. J.W. French. The little ones had a delightful time on the grassy lawn and the day will be long remembered as a red letter one. City Treasurer Burget informs THE CHRONICLE that the money from the sale of city bonds has left Boston [Massachusetts] and will reach The Dalles about July 12th. The amount is $38,000. When the coin arrives Mr. Burget will issue a call for all city warrants and pay them. The Dalles will then be on a cash basis and the first steps in a more rigid economical government will have been taken. Word has just been received that Archie Bassoni, the grandson of Mr. Alex McLeod of Kingsley [Oregon], was killed by being thrown from a horse in Sherman county. His body was brought to Kingsley, where the funeral takes place today. The young man was a brother to Miss Annie Bassoni of whose death from poisoning mention was made in this paper some time ago. The Hood River campmeeting begins July 25th, at the Belmont camping ground. A number of efficient ministers have been engaged and a profitable time expected. Those who come in teams can pasture them at reasonable rates. Hood River is a beautiful place and the campground pleasantly situated. A cordial invitation is extended for all to attend and help make the meeting a success. Those who go should take their tents and prepare to camp. Reverend T.D. Gregory and Reverend F.L. Johns will be the pastors in charge. PERSONAL MENTION page three Mr. F.A. Seufert returned today from Portland. Mr. T.H. Johnston of Dufur [Oregon] is in the city today. Mr. W.E. Previous winners were Bill Turner in 1980, Ed Goodman in 1981 and Scott Wood in 1982. The court appointed defense attorney for one of 22 Indian fish law violation cases was removed from the case here Tuesday afternoon after telling the court he could not continue because to do so would abridge his clients right. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicles Files December 14, 2003 20 Years Ago, December 14, 1983 R. Ewart Jewell has submitted a draft copy of the proposed plans for reorganization of school districts 9 and 12 to Wasco ESD Superintendent Fred Krauss. The plan can be revised before it is submitted to the ESD board for consideration as a final draft on December 21. The U.S. Supreme Court today refused to block a scheduled deposition by the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh who failed to show up for the 10 a.m. deposition appointment in Portland. The Bhagwan had been ordered by a U.S. District Court to give a statement in a defamation suit filed on his behalf and against Wasco County rancher Rosemary McGreer. Four employees of the Wasco County Road Department are retiring after compiling a total of 117 years service. The are: Lloyd (Cork) Bailey, 33 years; Steve Bailey, 26 years; Bill Mathis, 37 years; Del McCain, 18 years. Their jobs will not be filled. 40 Years Ago, December 14, 1963 Razing of two houses is under way at Fourth and Washington streets to make way for construction of the new Williams office building. The two old houses, both of historic significance in The Dalles are the old Mitchell home on the southwest corner of the intersection and the E.M. Williams home directly to the east. Construction of a two-level building on the front part of the 100-by-100 foot property, leaving the rear for off street parking, will begin soon said Don Williams of Williams properties. Loss was estimated at close to $100,000 in a fire that destroyed Dintys truck service station at Biggs Junction early Saturday. Heavy equipment, some of it virtually new, plus other contents of the building including a valuable coin collection, owned by Harvey Hansen of Rufus [Oregon], the station operator, boosted the loss. The two story building, which burned about 4:30 a.m., had a fully furnished apartment upstairs. 60 Years Ago, December 14, 1943 Fire starting at 9:40 yesterday evening completely destroyed the large frame dwelling occupied by Mr. and Mrs. George Moore and their daughters, on what is known as the old brickyard road leading to Cherry Heights west of The Dalles. The flames originated on the roof, presumably from sparks deposited there when a chimney burned out, according to Charles Roth Jr., city fire chief, who responded with the booster truck when a silent alarm was sounded. The Dalles fire department has received the necessary priority for the purchase of a new fire truck it was announced today by Charles Roth Jr., fire chief. The priority came through 18 days after application had been made. Miss Marjory Tye, Wasco County home demonstration agent, and Nelson Lewis, assistant county agent, left yesterday for Corvallis [Oregon] to attend a meeting of county agents and home demonstration agents. W. Wray Lawrence, county agent, left over the weekend for the same sessions. 100 Years Ago, December 14, 1903 Residents up in the neighborhood of Madison street and those who make their way from the bluff down that street are determined to have a sidewalk between Third and Fourth and to that end F.W.L. Skibbe has prepared a petition which he desires that all who frequent that thoroughfare will sign. Any interested in the project are asked to call at his hotel and look over the document. In remembrance of the unselfish action of Reverend D.V. Poling in coming to their assistance at their memorial exercises the previous Sunday, the members of the Cascade Lodge B.P.O.E. attended the services at the Congregational church last night in a body. Besides there was a large congregation, which fairly packed the auditorium and class room, in the desire to hear Mr. Poling to speak on the story of Christ as told in the famous book, Ben Hur. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicles Files Sunday, November 30, 2003 20 Years Ago, November 30, 1983 While the short term condition of the aluminum industry is vigorous, accelerating power costs project an unstable future the president of Martin Marietta Aluminum said today. David C. Dressler said that while the plants were running at 90 percent capacity now, the future held a different condition depending on power costs and world markets. Dressler was asked to comment on the occasion of the 25th year of manufacturing aluminum in The Dalles. Installation of James J. Hogue as worshipful master of Wasco Lodge No. 15 will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 4 at the Masonic Temple and other elective and appointive officers will be installed. Most bowlers may bowl a lifetime and never come close to picking up the 7-10 split. But 13 year-old Toni McCollum has her 7-10 conversion out of the way already. Toni, an eighth grader at The Dalles Junior High, picked up the hardest to get split last Saturday during Eds McMuffin (Junior and Senior) league play at Recreation Lanes. 40 Years Ago, November 30, 1963 Assault and battery warrants have been drawn against three unidentified men who signaled a car to stop on The Dalles-California Highway three miles north of Dufur (Oregon) and administered a beating to a Portland couple, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Jeffers, formerly of The Dalles. Five old slot machines turned over to county authorities by a man in the Dufur area, who found them in a house he had purchased, were destroyed this week. Hauled to the city dump, the machines were broken and then for good measure were run over by a bulldozer to flatten them further. An order signed by Circuit Judge Malcolm W. Wilkinson called for the destruction of the machines, possession of which is prohibited by statue. Candy Fowler, A Dalles teenager, tied for third in the 50 yard dash in the junior girls midget division at the AAU Junior Olympics track and field meet held last summer, that organization announced today. She ran the sprint in 6.5 seconds. 80 Years Ago, November 30, 1923 Alluring visions of $13,000 reward for the capture of the three DeAutremont brothers, wanted for murder and the robbery of a Southern Pacific train at Siskiyou on October 11, speeded two automobile loads of Wasco County officers to Celilo (Oregon) late Wednesday night. Assurances on the part of C.E. Frye, store proprietor at the village that he had recognized Roy DeAutremont resulted in the flying trip. The officers returned with their hopes smashed and their revolvers smokeless, in absence of an anticipated battle. In a foot ball game marked by spectacular plays, The Dalles High School eleven defeated Albany (Oregon) on Amotan field [The Dalles] yesterday by a score of 18 to 7. By this victory the local school team won an undisputed right to test its mettle against the best Oregon has to offer for state championship honors. The game was featured by an 85-yard run by Quarterback Pete Stadelman for a touchdown. 100 Years Ago, November 30, 1903 The James W. Nesmith Post G.A.R. attended the funeral of their late comrade, Andrew Jackson Linton, in a body yesterday afternoon. The services, which were conducted by Reverend W.E. Rossman, were held at the family residence on the East Hill. Deceased, who was a victim of consumption, came from Wyoming to Oregon on account of his health twenty years ago and settled on Ten Mile Creek. He resided there until last summer when with his wife he came to The Dalles. At the time of his death he was 65 years of age. History Mystery Photo November 16, 2003 [Text only] Apparently last week's puzzler, was more of a stumper than we thought. Helen Elsmore and Terray Harmon both recognized the event as a May Day celebration, with kids weaving a may pole. The actual caption on the picture says "Dalles Hospital recreation area 5th and Laughlin, 1890 W.O.W. May Day." Of course that leads us to the interesting question of what "W.O.W." stands for. Our first thought was "Woodmen of the World," a fraternal insurance order that used to operate a retirement home in what is now the restored Columbia Gorge Hotel, [Hood River] but that organization wasn't founded until June 6, 1890 in Omaha. And it's not the Workers of the World, which was known as the IWW for International Workers of the World and wasn't founded until 1905. Any ideas? If you have any suggestions, please contact Rodger Nichols, 541-506-4603; rnichols@eaglenewspapers.com or fax 541-298-1365. The Dalles Chronicle November 16, 2003 Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicles Files Editors note: The Chronicle inadvertently ran the November 16 Looking Back column last week [November 2, 2003]. This is the column that should have appeared. 20 Years Ago, November 9, 1983 Attorney General Dave Frohnmayer today filed a complaint in Wasco County Circuit Court seeking a ruling on whether the city of Rajneeshpuram is legally a city and whether it can receive public money. Frohnmayers complaint, filed on behalf of the state of Oregon, alleges that the city, which was founded by followers of the Indian guru, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, violates state and federal constitutional provisions involving separation of church and state. 40 Years Ago, November 9, 1963 Some increases in the number of unemployment was noted in early November by the Oregon Employment Service office here serving four counties, said N.E. Swan, manager in his monthly report, but payrolls were slightly larger for John Day Dam than a month ago. Seasonal layoffs were noted. Now on the list of dam workers are 517 with a total for all dam and allied relocation projects about 1,500 men. The Dalles slushed its way through a heavily muddied Amotan Field (The Dalles) to its seventh Inter-mountain League victory, defeating Mac-Hi 32-6 and completing its season with a 7-2 second alone in second place. Senior quarterback John Altendorf passed for one touchdown, ran for another and was one of 14 seniors playing his last football game for the Indians (The Dalles High School). 60 Years Ago, November 9, 1943 The Dalles fire department again was call, at 8:10 last night to the ruins of the Kerr-Gifford flour mill fire on East Second Street, where another blaze might have endangered surrounding property, had it not been promptly brought under control, which required 45 minutes. The ruins continue to smolder today, with one fire hose ready for action on the premises at all times until the burning grain finally is extinguished. Carl Stiefel, Wasco County war finance chairman, will be the guest of honor at a testimonial to be held in Portland on Friday, November 19, according to word received from E.C. Sammons, state chairman. He will be featured participant in the statewide meeting of the Oregon War Finance committee Million Dollar club, the program to be broadcast over a statewide network at 8 oclock that evening. 80 Years Ago, November 9, 1923 Cartons of toys and useful things, to alleviate the suffering of victims of the earthquake in Japan, are being prepared by school children of The Dalles for shipment on the S.S. Franconia, to the school children of Japan. The boxes are expected to arrive in Japan by New Years Day. Under the supervision of their teachers the pupils are busily packing the cartons with materials such as needles, scissors, brightly colored materials, crayon pencils and ribbons, which it is hoped will please the fancy of the children of Japan. Bids for construction of the Dufur-Tygh Valley (Oregon) grade section of The Dalles-California Highway will be opened by the state highway commission at Portland on November 26 according to an announcement made this morning by C.W. Wanzer, division engineer. The work will start shortly after the award of the contract. The section is 10 miles in length. Co9mpletion of construction on the Cow Canyon section is expected next week. 100 Years Ago, November 9, 1903 For fifteen years past the hearse owned by William Mitchell has done service in The Dalles, carrying the remains of loved ones to their last resting place. Mr. Mitchell recently disposed of it and in its place a fine new hearse, purchased by Ward and Robertson, will be used. It arrived yesterday morning and is a handsome thing, modern in every respect, the dull black trimmings and gray draperies setting off the glossy black to good effect. Special meetings which have been held at the Methodist church during the past three weeks closed last night and Reverend Williams, who has been assisting the pastor, returned to his home at Prosser [Washington] today. During the past week Reverend Williams has preached some splendid sermons and proven himself not only an able, but earnest worker. The Dalles Chronicle November 23, 2003 History Mystery Photo (Text Only) "A trio of aviation buffs picked up on last week's photos. Lafie Foster, Dan Sanders and Willis gholsten all knew that the top plane was a stunt plane piloted by Tex Rankin. He was a nationally-known celebrity in 1939 when his air circus visited The Dalles, having set several records, including a speed run from Canada to Mexico, and a stunt pilot as well. The United Airlines liner marked "Flagship", was part of Rankin's entourage. The event can be dated exactly, thanks to a souvenir kept in the same photo album in which the plane pictures were found. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicles Files November 23, 2003 20 Years Ago, November 23, 1983 A recall effort against Wasco County Sheriff Bob Brown ended Tuesday when a group circulating petitions for the recall failed to meet a 5 p.m. deadline for turning in the petitions to the county clerks office. Wasco County Clerk Sue Proffitt said she was notified at midafternoon on Tuesday by a spokesman for the Committee for Fair and Impartial Wasco County Government that the petitions would not be filed. Sealed bids on farm equipment sold by the Internal Revenue Service brought a total of $21,787.56, far below the $482,649 in estate taxes the IRS claims Al Stelzer owes. Included was a combine which sold for $5,000. There were vehicles and other farm equipment involved. 40 Years Ago, November 25, 1963 Note: The newspapers for November 23, 1963 were filled entirely with stories about the assassination of President John Kennedy. Item in Looking Back are taken from November 25, 1963 All three members of a Portland family was killed early Monday three miles west of Hood River (Oregon) on US 30 when the driver lost control and their westbound car skidded sideways in front of a truck. They were identified by the office of state police here as Rubie Lee Drake, the driver; William E. Drake, her husband; and Shirley Ann Drake, 14, their daughter. 60 Years Ago, November 23, 1943 A former livestock owner from Antelope (Oregon) today holds the distinguished flying cross, one of the top ranking army valor awards. He is S/Sgt. Robert E. McGreer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin E. McGreer and assistant radio operator of the Lib ship, Sweet Adeline, who received his award in connection with the record low level bombing attack which his Lib group made on the Rumanian oil fields at Ploesti. Walter R. Bailey, manager of the Columbia Fruit Growers, who a couple of weeks ago was seriously injured when a piece of hot metal flew into his left leg when a motor truck gasoline tank exploded at Rufus (Oregon), this morning for the first time returned to his desk in the warehouse at the foot of Madison street. His leg is still encased in a cast, but he is able to walk stiff-kneed, unassisted, except that he uses a cane. 80 Years Ago, November 23, 1923 Three million gallons of water a day can be pumped from the new city well without maximum pressure. Announcement to this effect was made today, following a test of the well by members of the water commission and, is beyond their greatest expectations. The well was drilled by George, Scott, a Portland contractor, at a cost of $2,400. He said last night that he believed that with maximum pressure the well would deliver 4,000,000 gallons of water every 24 hours. 100 Years Ago, November 23, 1903 Last Wednesday an overcoat and some other articles were stolen from the California restaurant and since that time Marshall Wood has been on the lookout for the culprit. Saturday afternoon he arrested one Ben DGrout, who has been in the city since last September, and of late seemed to have no occupation. DGrout admitted the theft and his case came up this afternoon. Our friend, J.T. Rorick, who has been ill for some time past, we learn is suffering with a genuine case of typhoid fever. We trust, however that J.T. will down the illness and come out on top. Tomorrow night the Wasco Tribe, I.O.R.M. [Improved Order of Red Men] will have a grand ball at the Baldwin opera house. With Birgfields orchestra furnishing the best of music and the effort which has been made to make this affair a success, a good time is assured all who attend. Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicles Files November 9, 2003 20 Years Ago, November 16, 1983 A five-alarm fire destroyed three businesses in the 1200 block of Kelly Avenue early today. There were no injuries. Lost in the fire were the Morrell Business Machines, 1207 Kelly Avenue; the Pirates Chest, a second hand store operated by the Wasco County Humane Society, next door to the north and a craft shop operated by Loretta Powell, located next door to the south. 40 Years Ago, November 16, 1963 In response to questions put to her by enforcement officers, as well as in her signed confession, Mary Lucile Karnes has told of efforts to start fires at various points in addition to the blaze that destroyed two business places Sunday on West Ninth Street. The fire early Sunday morning destroyed Ninth Street Supermarket and Sawyers Variety Store, with loss exceeding a quarter of a million dollars. John Shipley of Moro (Oregon) was elected president of the Sherman County Wheat Growers Association, affiliated with Oregon Wheat Growers League, at the annual meeting Friday night at which members heard reports and passed a number of resolutions. Sessions were held at the courthouse in the courtroom. Other officers named were Charles Burnett, vice president; and Tommy Thompson, secretary, both of Moro. Retiring president Hildred Zell of Wasco (Oregon) presided at the all day meeting. 60 Years Ago, November 16, 1943 William Ralph Bellinger, 28, said to be a drug addict, this morning was bound to the Wasco grand jury, in default of $3500 bail charged with robbery by force. Wylie Russ Hill, 18, a hitchhiker with him at the time, was held as a material witness in default of $1000 bail. Bellinger is charged with being the man, who, on Sunday morning entered Donnells drug store, and, placing his right hand in his pocket to simulate a gun, pointed it a M.Z. Donnell, proprietor, with a demand that he turn over all narcotics under the threat of death. The combined glee clubs and choruses of the junior-senior high schools will be presented in the annual Thanksgiving vespers service at the auditorium of The Dalles High School on the Sunday before Thanksgiving under the direction of Miss Myrtle Schmidt, head of the vocal music department. The choruses include 150 voices, both boys and girls. There will be no instrumental numbers this year because of the illness this fall of C. Robert White, head of instrumental music. 80 Years Ago, November 16, 1923 Negotiations have been completed whereby the United States forestry department will soon place on the market approximately two billion feet of virgin pine and fir timber, which lies in the forest reserve south of Friend (Oregon). This announcement, of such import to The Dalles and Wasco County, was made this morning by Congressman N.J. Sinnott upon returning from Portland where he and John G. Heimrich were engaged in a conference with United States District Forester George H. Cecil.
