The Dalles Chronicle January 7, 2002 A Portland woman died on Saturday afternoon when the vehicle she was riding in slid broadside into the path of a pickup on Highway 35 at Milepost 64.29. Pronounced dead at the scene was Yvette Barhishindi Mubalama, 28. Oregon State Police said she was riding in a 1984 Toyota Tercel operated by Luvumbu Ndongala Hassan, 33, also of Portland. The Toyota was northbound when it skidded out of control on a curve and into the southbound lane, where it was hit by the 1998 Ford pickup operated by Darryl Brian Barton, 31, 1218 Tucker Road, Hood River. Hassan suffered head injuries in the crash and was taken to a Portland hospital by LifeFlight helicopter. Barton and his three passengers were all uninjured. Road conditions at the time of the accident, 12:25 p.m., were wet with patches of slush. The OSP said alcohol was not a factor in the crash. OSP troopers from The Dalles investigated the accident, assisted by OSP officers from Portland and Hood River county deputies. The Dalles Chronicle January 2, 2002 By Elroy King of The Chronicle Two men died when they were struck by a pickup that skidded out of control on an icy overpass at Milepost 43 on I-84 Monday night. Dead at the scene were Hector Manuel Virgeon-Orozco, 32, 3344 AGA Road, No.J-8, Hood River (Oregon); and Kevin Ronald Fitzsimmons, 28, Tacoma, (Washington). An Oregon State Police report said the fatal incident involved two accidents. In the first, at 9:27 p.m., Orozco's Nissan eastboung pickup went out of control on icy overpass and veered to the right and hit a side slope and rolled over, coming to rest on its wheels. Orozco was not injured in the initial accident, and another vehicle with two occupants stopped to assist. Fitzsimmons got out of his vehicle and he and Orozco were standing next to the Nissan pickup when a Toyota pickup, operated by Augusten Reyez-Chavez, 26, Aberdeen, Washington also went out of control on the ice. It hit the Nissan pickup and hit the two men, then hit the Nissan pickup and rolled over. Fitzsimmons' body was found under the Toyota pickup. Chavez was taken to the Hood River hospital for treatment of a broken leg and was later taken to a Portland hospital. A passenger in the Toyota, Gabriel Fuentes, 22, had head lacerations and was taken to the Hood River hospital. A second passenger, Rigerberto Reyez, 19, was not injured. The other person in the Fitzsimmons vehicle, Desiree Durand, also of Tacoma, did not get out of that vehicle and was not injured. The OSP report said Chavez consented to having blood and urine samples taken, but at this point there is no reason to believe alcohol was a factor in the accident, the OSP office said. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/nZB.2ACE/136.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Greetings, A suggestion for discovering a little more info on deaths, especially when there are no death certificate.... contact the cemetery directly and ask if they have records for the internment. I have discovered they can be the best source sometimes and they are usually delighted to help. I have two early Oregon deaths 1906 & 1911 in Wasco, Sherman Co. They were buried in Portland, but there are no death certificate or even a noticeable grave left. One day I started telephoning the various Portland cemeteries determined to find something out about my great great grandmother. Riverview Cemetery actually had copies of the Internments and were happy to send them to me in Germany. So good luck, if you try this angle. Sara
