Published by The Dalles High School Students, December 1922. FOOTBALL pages 51 - 55 Goldendale (Washington) Defeats The Dalles The Dalles high football aggregation tasted defeat for the first time this season at the hands of the snappy Goldendale eleven Saturday, November 18, at Brown field, Goldendale, by the score of 18 to 13. By virtue of the win Goldendale clinched the honors for the Mid-Columbia. Both teams played good ball, and Goldendale won the game by breaks. The break came in the last minute of play when Camlend of Goldendale pulled a statue play and got away for 20 yards. Camlend completed a pass that put the ball on The Dalles' one-yard line, after the whistle had blown, the full-back of Goldendale shoved the ball over the line which gave the winning touchdown. Time after time, the Goldendale halves broke through The Dalles line, only to be stopped by R. Van Orman, The Dalles safety, who never missed a tackle. The Dalles men were not up to their usual form in the game and played brilliantly in streaks, but failed to hold in the crises. The Dalles team did not show its old time fight any time during the contest, only when they would get their backs to the goal line, they would fight like tigers. Those who played a good game for The Dalles were: Cooper, H. Van Orman, and O. Mann on the line, and Wilcox, Esping, R. Van Orman and Davis in the backfield. Wilcox played a good game at quarter until injuries caused him to be taken from the game. The only substitutions made during the entire game for The Dalles were E. Mann at tackle for Gibson and K. Stone at quarter for Wilcox. The Dalles' first touchdown came in the end of the first quarter when, after advancing the ball to the 10-yard line, they lost it on failure to make yardage. Goldendale punted with The Dalles blocking kick with Bolton, falling on the ball. After making 8 yards in three downs, with 2 yards to go Wilcox went over for the first touchdown on a sneak play. Esping failed to kick goal. On the next kick-off due to an error of a few Dalles' players, Kaiser, fullback of the Goldendale aggregation skirted the side line the entire distance of the field for a touchdown. Goldendale failed to convert goal. Score, The Dalles 6, Goldendale 6. The Dalles' second touchdown came in the second quarter after the Goldendale line had failed to hold on a punt, and The Dalles boys broke through and blocked it, with Cramer recovering on the 5-yard line. Esping carried the ball over on the next play for a touchdown and also converted goal. A few minutes after the opening of the second half, Goldendale attempted a drop-kick which failed to go over the bar by a few inches. The ball see-sawed back and forth over the field until the last 5 minutes of play when after a series of double criss-crosses, which were very complicated, they put the ball over. Goldendale failed to kick goal. Score, The Dalles 13, Goldendale 12. With about three minutes of time left to play in, Goldendale became desperate for another touchdown and carried the ball up to the three-yard line on criss-crosses, and with 15 seconds left to play in Goldendale lined up very fast and put the ball across, but failed to kick goal. Score Goldendale 18, The Dalles 13. The individual stars of the Goldendale team were Camlend at quarter and Kaiser at full, Camlend seemed to be able to go through The Dalles line at any time he wished, as he made some wonderful runs around the ends. The line-up of the teams was as follows: The Dalles - Ends, Mann and Bolton; tackles, Cramer and Gibson; guards, Cooper and Jameson; center, H. Van Orman; quarter, Wilcox; halves, Davis and R. Van Orman; full, Esping. Goldendale - Ends, Collins and Musgrave; tackles, Dayton and Riley; guards, Teb and Coffield; center, Mort; quarter, Camlend; halves, Brunner and Wheeler; full, Kaiser. Officials - Referee, Goldquist, Portland; umpire, Tatro, The Dalles; head linesmen, Brooks, Goldendale. Published by The Dalles High School Students December 1922 NEWS NOTES Pages 47-49 Junior Class Play "The Amazons", the Junior Class play, given at the Civic auditorium, November 28, was a whimsical "romancy romance", having an old English background plus a great deal of modernism. Miriam, over the fact that all of her boys were girls, firmly resolved to make men of them anyway. But even the stern heart of Lady Castlejordan could not resist the "little arrows", and she at last abandoned her plans for the more natural ones of her daughters. Beulah Esping personified Lady Castlejordan, and judging from the stately grace and ease with which she acted her part, she might well have been that worthy lady in reality. Wilbur Stadelman as Reverend Roger Minchin, an old friend of the family, in whom the girls found a sure refuge and staunch friend, portrayed his part exceptionally well. Lord Noel, or Lady Noeline Belturbet, considered the "pick of the basket" and the most manly of Lady Castlejordan's sons (forgetting the fact that her heart was just like that of any other girl) was exceedingly well represented by Arvilla Kretzer. Lady Wilhemina, or Lord Willy, the effeminate of the Castlejordan "sons", whose tender heart was a willing recipient of the wiles of gleeful cupid, could have found no better or more pleasing representative than Eleanor Dickenson. Lord Tommy (Lady Thomasin only when away from Overcote) who came as near being a boy as a girl could be, was cleverly portrayed by the swaggering, boyish manner of Helen Toomey. The part of Viscount Litterly Barrington, the graceful, self-confident cousin of the three young ladies, was given due honor in the gallant courting and winning personality of Harry Wickman. William Ketchum, displaying exceptional talent in the part of Andre de Grival, the Frenchman who was "all English", but who persisted in saying the right things at the wrong time, kept the house in a continual uproar. Walter Emerson gave a notable personification of the lofty H'Englishman, Galfred, Earl of Tweenwayes, who thought the honor of becoming a Tweenwayes' wife enough to melt even a man's heart - confound it! Verla Miller as "Sergeant" Shuter made a very fitting physical instructor for the girls, and nearly always helped the principles of Lady Castlejordan. The part of Fitton (a gamekeeper) was ably played by Paul Schiller. Floyd Cook, as the old butler, had a very difficult role to play, but he did it in a very fitting manner. Elbert Kirk in the part of Orts (a poacher) showed considerable ability in "treating 'em rough". Transcriber's note: I've refrained from copying articles that do not include names of residents; some of the colloquial terms we'll have to guess at the meanings of; present day capitals used on certain words were not used then. Fraternity names and organizations I am not familiar with. Advertisements placed in the newspaper were coded for easy identification. STRAYED A 2-year-old Hereford cow, branded M T on right hip, upper bit on right ear with calf, strayed from my place during the summer. Word comes in from Kingsley (Oregon) that Miss Margaret Bolton, who has been dangerously ill for the past week is somewhat improved. Parties holding tickets for prizes at Gumbert's are requested to seal same in envelopes and return to Gumbert's not later than January 5th. Ernest Jensen is closing out his business in Hood River (Oregon) and will move to Idaho, where he has found a good opening to go into the candy-making business. At a meeting of the Methodist Sunday school board held Wednesday evening, the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: J.S. Landers, Superintendent; F.R. Angle, 1st Assistant Superintendent; W.E. Gilhousen, 2nd Assistant Superintendent; W.A. Kirby, Secretary; Mable Collins, Treasurer; Chas. Collins, Librarian; Lloyd Laughlin, Assistant Librarian; Edith Randall, Organist; Miss Collum, Assistant Organist; W. Cross, Chorister. Beginning the new year aright Herman Wheeler and Miss Annie Bunnell of Cascade Locks (Oregon) and John Ira Taylor and Hattie Caroline Purser, of Hood River (Oregon), petitioned County Clerk Lake for marriage licenses, which were granted this morning. At the yearly election of the Women's Relief Corps, the following officers were chosen for the ensuing year: President, Mrs. Blanche Patterson; senior vice-president, Mrs. Jessie McArthur; junior vice-president, Mrs. Carrie Brownell; captain, Mrs. Ella Grimes; secretary, Miss Anna Stubling; treasurer, Mrs. Belle Burger. It has been a long time since Mr. and Mrs. William Woodroe had as large a family of Royal Neighbors and their friends as were inmates of their household new year's eve. They had made ample preparations, so were ready for all who came to watch the year out and the new in. A count was taken before lunch and sixty were served. They must have had a fine time as it was between 3 and 4 o'clock before all departed. The watch meeting spent at Fraternity Hall with Cedar Circle was pleasant and enjoyed by about two hundred people. A varied program was given. Little Leah Booth personated the new year and came in on the stroke of 12, presenting hand painted calendars to each one present. It was 1 o'clock before the audience dispersed. George Mann, who lives in Thompson's Addition, was fortunate in one sense of the word and unfortunate in another on Wednesday afternoon. Driving into the city, when about two hundred yards beyond the brow of the brewery grade, the double tree broke and his horses started to run down the grade. Before they had gone far they ran against a large rock and fell over the embankment onto the rocks eighty feet beneath, killing one of them instantly and the other died a short time afterward. This is a great loss to Mr. Mann since he refused $300 for them not long since. Mr. Mann was fortunate in jumping before the crash came. Reverend B.E. Koontz, complaining witness in the Nickelsen case, said to a reporter: "The statement that there is such a strong protest against Dr. Brown trying the case and that Bishop Cranston removed him is false and untrue. Dr. Brown requested the bishop to appoint Dr. Gibson or some other presiding elder. He did this through the counsel of both sides, and in a personal letter himself and the bishop stated to Dr. Brown that to accommodate him he would do this, and not because he would act unfairly in the matter. This appointment of Dr. Gibson as chairman of the investigating committee does not displace Dr. Brown as presiding elder. He is still in control of every other matter pertaining to the case, and still is in full authority concerning C.D. Nickelsen and the Colfax church. Another well-known citizen of The Dalles - one who has lived here for many years - died suddenly at noon today, and those who have been accustomed to seeing Charles Fouts pass in and out among them for years will see him no more. Mr. Fout's daughters, Frances and Alberta, being away, the former a stenographer in Portland and the latter visiting her uncle in Oregon City. Mr. Fouts had been batching with Mr. Root on the hill. For two weeks past he has been complaining; but this morning started down with Mr. Root and having placed his tools in his pockets said if he felt better he would finish a job of carpentering which had been waiting for him for some time. Growing tired, he suggested that they go down to Page's home at the end of Liberty street to rest. They did go, but Mr. Page was not at his home and they came on up Second street. He grew worse and complained of a severe pain in the region of his heart. They stepped into Charlie Frank's saloon and Fouts sat down a mom! ent. A little later he walked to the back room followed by Root. Soon he grew much worse and rested his head on the table. A physician was summoned, but before he could reach the saloon, Mr. Fouts had died. He was a man of about 53 years and leaves a wife (who unfortunately has been an inmate of the insane asylum for some years) and two daughters. A brother, also, resides at Oregon City (Oregon) and one at Dayton, Washington. The former is expected here tonight, and it is likely the remains will be taken to Portland for burial. ______________________ STRAYED Came to my place near M. Speicenger's, one spotted red and white steer, with long hair; no visible brand; two crops on right ear. Owner can have same by proving property and paying all charges. J.L.
