    3. I had an opportunity today to visit the library and would recommend if you get such an opportunity, do so. The Dalles Library is fortunate (through hard work and effort I'm sure) to have an outstanding genealogy section in its holdings. It has hundreds of genealogy related books in addition to collections stored in card-stock folders that are located in the enclosed glass bookcases. These folders are in heavy plastic file holders inside these bookcases. These card-stock folders are not stored alphebetically or indexed so be sure to give yourself plent of time to browse. They are continually adding to their inventory. I took an unscientific survey and learned the following: Name of county Plastic file holders Baker 1 Benton 1 Clackamas 3 Clatsop 1 Columbia 1 Coos 1 Crook 1 Curry 1 Deschutes 1 Douglas 4 Gilliam 1 Harney 1 Hood River 2 Jackson 2 Jefferson 1 Josephine 1 Klamath 1 Lane 4 Lake 1 Lincoln 1 Linn 3 Malheur 1 Marion 5 Morrow 1 Multnomah 2 Polk 1 Sherman 4 Tillamook 1 Umatilla 1 Union 1 Wallowa 1 Wasco 13 Washington 2 Yamhill 2 Oregon 6 Oregon State 4 Oregon Donation Land Claims 2 Washington State 4 Clark Numerous items Klickitat 1 Skamania 1 Yakima 2 Copied and submitted by Earline Wasser Member of Columbia Gorge Genealogical Society c/o The Dalles/Wasco County Public Library 722 Court Street The Dalles, Oregon 97058 http://community.oregonlive.com/cc/genealogy Browse http://historysavers.com/orwasco/ for recently updated information regarding Wasco County. 3. The Dalles Chronicle September 8, 2002 Compiled by Elroy King of the Chronicle. 20 Years Ago, September 8, 1982 Tom Adams clocked a 1:48:17 to win the Labor Day Triathlon, while side Morrison and Dan Nelson clocked the fastest times for female and male finishers in the 10-kilometer Labor Day run. Adams was one of nine finishers in the triathlon, which combines swimming across the Columbia, bicycling and running. Placing second was Chris McKenzie in 2:07.8. 40 Years Ago, September 8, 1962 Three "very dangerous" prisoners who broke out of the Wasco County jail Friday night by overpowering jailer Elmer Buskuhl were still at large late this morning. A large scale search produced nothing to indicate where the hardened, armed criminal trio may have gone or their mode of travel, except for the pickup truck in their initial getaway. The escapees were being held here for the night while being transferred from San Diego (California) to Spokane (Washington) to face armed robbery charges. Casey Jones made his last run for Union Pacific here this week. The veteran locomotive engineer, who started with steam and finished when diesel had almost completely taken over U.S. railroading, brought a freight train in from Hinkle (Oregon) and stepped down from the cab for the final time. K.E. Jones, whose "Casey" originated in baseball not with the fabled locomotive engineer of song and story, had worked for UP out of Portland and other points, but mostly out of The Dalles. 60 Years Ago, September 8, 1942 The proposed abandonment of the Shaniko (Oregon) branch of United Pacific railroad had its opening hearing this morning and this afternoon in the city council chambers in The Dalles city hall with R.T. Boyden, I.C.C. (Interstate Commerce Commission) examiner from Washington, D.C. taking the evidence. The railroad occupied the morning hours with a presentation of its data and evidence to be followed by attorneys and other spokesmen appearing on behalf of the wheat growers, livestock and other interests of both Sherman and Wasco counties, through which the Shaniko branch operates its freight and limited passenger service. 80 Years Ago, September 8, 1922 The city water commission has accepted the recommendation of the chamber of commerce water committee that a huge storage reservoir be constructed at Brooks Meadows to augment the present water supply and the matter will be placed before voters at the November election. Such was the delectation today of J.T. Rorick, president of the water commission. Winter Banana apples are now being packed at the local plant of the Oregon Growers Cooperative Association for shipment by freight to the eastern markets, Manager C.R. Thompson said today. Late varieties of pears are also being shipped to the east, but this fruit is going largely by express. Edward P. Livingston of Hood River (Oregon) has been named manager of the local office of the Western Union Telegraph company and took charge of the work today. Mr. Livingston succeeds W.H. Vanderboom who was recently promoted to the managership of the office in Bellingham, Washington. 100 Years Ago, September 8, 1902 Stockmen in the Bakeoven (Oregon) neighborhood have had no end of trouble and much loss from mange among their horses. While many have complied with the rules governing such disease, others are slack and thus it is impossible to stamp it out. At 3 o'clock this afternoon, William Gilhousen received a message from his wife, who is visiting at Wrentham (Oregon), saying that the barn belonging to M.D. Farrington had just been destroyed by fire, and with it a horse, ten tons of hay, seventy-five sacks of wheat, a new drill and other farming implements. The first meeting of the Good Intent Society of the Methodist Church will be held at the home of Mrs. S. Bolton Wednesday afternoon. All members are requested to make an effort to be present. 3. Published by The Dalles High School Students FOOTBALL pages 55 - 57 James John 7, The Dalles 2 The Dalles High School football team outplayed the heavy James John team in all departments of the game on Amotan Field, Thanksgiving Day, but a costly fumble in the first quarter spelled defeat. The quarter back of the James John team picked up the fumble and raced 80 yards for a touchdown. They also kicked goal. Playing the last game of his high school career, Esping stood out as the individual star, making yardage every time he was called upon. O. Mann and H. Van Orman played the outstanding game in the line. O. Mann going down on punts and stopping the receiver as he caught the ball. Cramer, although not physically able played the entire game and played well. Jameson, Bolton, Cooper and Gibson all played an outstanding game for The Dalles. Stadelman at quarter played the best game at quarter that was seen on the field. Wilcox although crippled played a few minutes and Stone played a good game at quarter also. Ron Van Orman did not play his usual bang up game. Other halves who played a good game but failed to get under way were Davis, Martin, and Conner. The Dalles kept the ball in James John's territory the entire game but lacked the punch to put it over. In the last few minutes of play Esping threw a pass to R. Van Orman who received it on the 5-yard line here the James John team held The Dalles for downs and The Dalles lost the ball. James John received the ball, but The Dalles players were on him as soon as he received the ball, thereby giving The Dalles a safety, their only score for the game. The Dalles was outweighed approximately 15 pounds to the man, but it was The Dalles' fight that kept the James John players from registering more points than they did. The Dalles warriors took the ball over a dozen times in the entire game from the center of the field down to the shadow of the goal posts only to lose the ball on a fumble. It was only one costly fumble that cost The Dalles the game on the 20-yard line, when making a line plunge, The Dalles fumbled with Robertson recovering and racing to the goal posts for the only touchdown of the game. One of the greatest sensations of the game was Stadelman's playing at quarter who whenever he did take the ball seemed to be able to walk through the James John line for 4 and 5 yards at every attempt. All three of the quarters seemed to use their heads to advantage against the James John team as their quarter would try to guess where The Dalles was going only to be fooled by our quarters, by a split buck with Esping going through the enemies line for yardage at every attempt. The game ended with the ball on the James John 80-yard line in their possession.
