Gilhousen is very sick. Mr. C.E. Haight left this morning for Portland to labor for Uncle Sam on the U.S. jury. Miss Ursa and Master Eddy Michell returned this morning from a two weeks visit at Columbus (Washington?). The entertainment given by the German Gesang Verein Harmony netted about eighty dollars. Mrs. C.E. Haight, who has been quite sick for several weeks, is so far recovered as to be able to be up. James Fulton jr., is in the city. He reports the late rains have put the ground in good condition for the plow. Miss Annie Roberts, of this city has been engaged to teach the primary department of the Hood River school. Mr. H. Rice and Mr. George H. Riddell, the committee appointed by the farmers to meet with the board of trade, are in the city. Miss Nellie and Master Truman Butler were passengers on the morning train for Kansas, returning to school after a very pleasant vacation. Honorable E.L. Smith is now at Good Samaritan hospital, Portland. He is reported to be slowly improving, under the care of competent physicians and nurses, and we hope soon to be able to chronicle his complete recovery. (Glacier Newspaper). Honorable T.J. Stevenson, member of the legislature from Crook county is here on his way to Salem (Oregon). He was one of Wasco's live representatives in 1872, and will no doubt feel kindley towards old Wasco (county) in any legislation she may need at the coming session. Honorable E.B. Faull of Baker City (Oregon) has spent a day or two in our city. Mr. Faull is one of our railroad commissioners and informs us that that body has made a critical examination of the high trestle near Crate's Point (west of The Dalles) and find it perfectly safe, and they have also made a careful examination of the road and bridges between here and Portland. Reverend J.T. Eshelman, of Yakima (Washington), and one of the few Democrats elected to the Washington legislature, was in the city Saturday on his way home from Portland. He stopped off here to visit his brother Dr. Eshelman, and for old acquaintance sake made us a pleasant call. He has prospered in worldly affairs up Yakima way, likes the country and the people, and we are glad to see (as the election demonstrated) that they like him. He is of the opinion that his state should do something towards opening the Columbia (river) and will no doubt aid in every possible way in accomplishing this result. DIED John Ernst, an old pioneer of this county, died at the country hospital December 31st, 1890, aged 75 years. Deceased came to this coast with the 14th Rt (regiment?) of Infantry under Commander General Wool in 1852, and after being discharged from the army went to farming on Five Mile, later at Dry Hollow (The Dalles). He was a native of Thueringen, Germany. W.F. Guytin and wife, sold the west half of the southeast quarter, and the east half of the southwest quarter of section 4 township 1 south of range 13 east, to D. McKinley to-day. AN OPEN RIVER A public meeting will be held Saturday, January 24th, at the following places for the purpose of receiving subscriptions to a stock company to be formed for the purpose of placing boats on the river between The Dalles and the Locks. The person named will have stock books in their possession, and will be glad to receive any amount which farmers or others feel disposed to give. A full attendance of those interested is requested. The precincts will be represented as follows: Fairfield School House - George H. Riddle. Eight Mile - Henry Gilpin. Dufur - Horace Rice, A.M. Allen. Liberty School House - E. Pitman. Kingsley - H.M. Baxter. Oak Grove - S. G. Backeby. Wamic - E.N. Chandler. Tygh - Ben McAtee. Antelope - Allen Grant. Mosier - S. Husbands. Hood River - J. H. Middleton. Cascade Locks - Dr. H.A. Leavens. --------------------------- Mr. Oscar Stranahan has purchased machinery for a sash and door factory, which he will build here as soon as he secures a suitable location. He expects to have his manufactory ready for business by March 1st. (Glacier Newspaper). --------------------------- For the information of those folks in Wasco County who are growling about the action of the county court of Sherman county in leasing the free bridge road to a private individual and allowing him to collect toll thereon, we would say that the court acted by virtue of authority granted by section No. 4119 of Hill's Code which empowers the county court to lease any public road along the line of which there is insufficient labor to maintain such road. We are free to say that the circumstances in this case warrented the court in this action and in leasing the road they had the interests of the residents of that neighborhood in view. Fraternity names and organizations I am not familiar with. Advertisements placed in the newspaper were coded for easy identification in later issues. LOCAL BREVITIES Four tramps were furnished work yesterday by Recorder Knaggs. Mr. Frank Kincaid, County Commissioner, came in from Antelope (Oregon) Friday. Mr. R.B. Hood, who has the contract for distributing the water pipes, has the work about half completed. There are about 100 tons to be distributed yet. Mr. E Beck, bade good by to his many friends here after a two weeks visit and left for his home, San Francisco, on the delayed train this morning. He goes by way of Tacoma (Washington). Mr. Hampton has about a car load of cattle at the stockyards. The demand is light for beef owing to a large supply being laid in for the holidays, and the turkeys, geese and game have given the beef market a hard deal for the past two weeks. Mr. Glenn justly complains of boys breaking the electric lamp globes with their air guns. Five of them were broken in one day. Parents as well as boys are notified that any boy caught in the act will be prosecuted and will have to pay for a globe besides. The Gymnasium Club gave another of their very pleasant dances last night. The beautiful hall was well filled with happy young people, who tripped it lightly until after 12 o'clock. Professor Birgfelds' band furnished the music which was as usual excellent. Our popular merchant, Mr. N. Harris left Friday morning for Chicago (Illinois) and New York for a month's visit. He goes on a pleasure trip entirely, the principal object being to visit his old partner Mars. Epenstine who is at present in Chicago, and whom he has not seen for eighteen years. We wish him a pleasant journey and a safe return. Mr. Richard Allen of Portland is in the city. Mr. J.F. Hanrahan, at one time in charge of the boat building for the O.S.N. arrived here yesterday. Our reporter this morning found the genial city recorder busily engaged in patching up a beautiful oil painting which some ruthless fellow had torn in two. It is a picture of which Mr. Knaggs is very proud and he feels keenly the rough usage his property has been subjected to. Rosa Brune. --------------------- At Portland, Tuesday December 30, 1890, Mr. George K. Wentworth to Miss Famella A. Becker. Mr. Wentworth is well known here and is at present, we believe, superintendent at the car shops at Salt Lake City (Utah). -------------------- At the residence of the bride's parents, in this city Thursday January 1st, 1891, Honorable George Dysart of Centralia Washington, to Miss Cora Butler daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Butler of this city. Mr. Dysart is one of Centralia's leading attorneys, and through young has pushed himself rapidly to the front rank in his profession. At the last election he was returned to the legislature from his county, and is that style of man that will make himself felt, as well as heard in that body. The bride is well known to all our people, is a charming woman of unusual intellectuality, thoroughly womanly, and a fitting helpmeet for the big hearted and energetic gentleman on whom she bestowed her affections. The ceremony was performed by Reverend George Sickafoose, and the presents were numerous and bountiful. They left for Tacoma (Washington) on the delayed passenger train at 8 o'clock this morning, and will go from there to Olympia to remain during the session of the legislature which meets next Monday. The Chronicle extends its paternal blessing and joins their host of friends in hoping they may live to celebrate their golden wedding.
