Looking Back, A Glimpse Through the Chronicle's Files The Dalles Chronicle October 6, 2002 (Chronicle Editor's Note: Papers for October 6, not available). 20 Years Ago, October 8, 1982 In case of an injury to a teammate, Ken Dayley of The Dalles could play for the Atlanta Braves in the World Series. This is if the Braves, currently trailing St. Louis 1-0 in the National League Championship Series, get to the world series. Dayley, a left handed pitcher who graduated from The Dalles High School in 1977, was added to the Atlanta major league roster too late to be eligible for the playoffs, according to Steve Langston of the Braves' publicity department. 40 Years Ago, October 6, 1962 "This is tremendous" and with these words Lt. Commissions Glenn Ryan, territorial commander, summed up his impressions of the new Salvation Army headquarters to be dedicated here this Sunday. Commissioner Ryan, who arrived Friday evening, put his enthusiasm into additional expressions of praise for the new facility at Third and Madison streets. Three amateur boxers from The Dalles area tonight are scheduled to appear on Portland televised amateur boxing shown on Channel 11 at 9:30 p.m. They are Eddie Edmo, of Wishram (Washington), 175; Steve Smith, Mosier (Oregon) 70; and Chris Brace, The Dalles, 60 pounds. They have been training here under the American Legion's ring program. 60 Years Ago, October 6, 1942 Today marks the opening of the first direct transportation between the ocean and The Dalles, with the arrival in this city of oceangoing tugboat and a barge bringing to this port a shipment of more that a half million gallons of gasoline. Captain A. Leppalauto of this city, general manager of the Inland Navigation Company, said this morning that this cargo comprises not only the first direct shipment of gasoline from the ocean to The Dalles, but is also the largest single shipment to arrive in this city at any one time. Leslie Thouvenel Jr., who joined the state police about one year since, was sent first from The Dalles to Astoria (Oregon), then to Baker (Oregon) and this week began duty on the Pendleton (Oregon) station, where he expects to remain permanently. Thouvenel was in the first army draft leaving Portland, but being with the field artillery for three months he received a medical discharge, whereupon he signed up with the state police. 80 Years Ago, October 6, 1922 Elmer Williams, predatory animal inspector of the bureau of biological survey, with headquarters in Portland arrived Wednesday in Dufur (Oregon) and is to be in this territory for a week. The bureau of biological survey is carrying on a cooperative campaign with the county and stockmen to eradicate coyotes. Two hunters are being used in Wasco County, one in Dufur and the other in Maupin (Oregon). Sheriff Levi Chrisman and Deputy G.L. Coleman yesterday afternoon conducted a raid on the farm of H.L. Morse. Two 50-gallon kegs of prune mash were found on the premises and were confiscated. This morning in the justice court Morse pleaded guilty to the charge of manufacturing and having in his possession illicit liquor and was fined $250. The Morse ranch is three miles east of Friend (Oregon). At a recent meeting of city school principals, it was decided to issue report cards for grade school pupils monthly instead of every six weeks, which has been the custom in the past it was announced today by Superintendent Will E. Wiley. 100 Years Ago, October 6, 1902 This is nothing short of criminal carelessness to leave a gaping pitfall like the sewer ditches on a public highway without a danger signal, was proven by the accident which befell L.E. Crowe Saturday evening. Starting home from the store he proceeded to drive up Federal Street, for the moment forgetting the sewer ditch, when of a sudden his horse was precipitated into the ditch with the wheels on one side of the buggy in a like predicament, while he was thrown about ten feet on the debris ahead. Mr. Crowe was not seriously injured, the horse was somewhat cut and the buggy was badly demolished. Transcriber's Note: I've refrained from copying articles that do not include names of residents, some of the colloquial terms we'll have to guess at the meaning of, present day capitals used on certain words were not used then. The Dalles Daily Chronicle, Wednesday, January 7, 1891 Front page. OPIUM SMUGGLERS CAUGHT Portland, Jan. 7 - The police to-day arrested Joe Billings and Thomas Collins who had in charge about three hundred pounds of unstamped opium. Billings and Collins were conveying opim in an express wagon, to a hiding place in a remote part of the city. The opium was turned over to the customs officers. LOCAL BREVITIES Page Three John Parker and Mr. Wallace of Hood River (Oregon) are in the city. Mr. Orion Kinersly, who has been at Arlington (Oregon) since last Sunday returned this morning. Mr. J.W. Condon goes to Weiser Idaho to-night to bring down a carload of horses he has there. Mr. Deerhake is so far recovered from his wound as to be able to sit up. He is out of danger and will soon be well. Mr. I.C. Darland brought a stage load of Goldendaleites (Washington) here yesterday morning; among them T.L. Masters, J.C. Richards and Ed. Snipes. Honorable H.L. Leavens, of Cascade Locks (Oregon), came up this morning to assist the county court and his colleague in looking after the county's business. Mr. J.H. Shearer is in the city. He says that his sheep are in fine condition, and that everything the stockmen have are wintering unusually well. John Watson, a Prineville freighter, while unharnessing his horses in this city last evening, was kicked on the right leg just above the knee, which came near breaking the member. He is barely able to be around to-day, with the use of crutches. Mr. Brooks, the U.S. signal service officer, hoisted the first signal this morning. It is a white flag indicating clear weather, and being hoisted over the CHRONICLE building, we wish it distinatly understood that the white flag does not apply to the CHRONICLE but only to the weather. Crowe went down to Hood River (Oregon) this morning and will return tomorrow. Robert Kelley, of Kingsley (Oregon), is in the city. He reports everything lovely in his locality. Mr. L.E. Crowe went to Hood River this morning to attend a meeting of the Hood River Townsite Company, of which he is president. Mr. Lowe, the engineer in charge of the city water works, has arrived and will superintend the construction of the work as it progresses. Dr William Lee, of High Prairie, who is an excellent veterinary surgeon, returned home this morning from Pendleton (Oregon) where he was called to attend to a valuable horse. Mr. Irwin, of Idaho, stopped off at the stock yards Tuesday with 300 head of beef cattle, to rest and feed them. They go to the American Cold Storage Meat Packing Co. of Portland. Charley Richmonds team became frightened while waiting for a train the other night and started to run away. They only got across the street, when they collided with a big lamp post that anchored them. No damage except breaking one of the irons on the end of the tongue, to which the breast straps are fastened. The sneak thief referred to elsewhere in this issue, has been getting in his work in good shape and is evidently desirous of starting a livery stable. Sunday night he, or some one else, stole a set of harness from Mr. Wakefield, another from George Miller and another from H.C. Neilsen. He also took an overcoat from Miller's place. A "Ghost Dancer Here". An Indian reported yesterday that Sunday an Indian arrived on the train from Dakota, that he had been wounded severly, and showed the Indians here his wounds. Claiming to have been killed and brought to life again by the Indian Messiah; that he has aroused considerable excitment among the Indians here, who are dancing, and that he is trying to instill the Messiah craze into them and get them to go to war with the whites. It is not probable the fellow, if he is here, could induce the Indians to take any stock in his statements, but a few such runners scattered among the Shoshones and Piutes south of us might cause serious trouble. From Sarah Winnemucca's statement, just such messengers have been sent among her people, and it may be possible that the story told by the Indian here is substantially true. Fraternity names and organizations I am not familiar with. Advertisements placed in the newspaper were coded for easy identification in later issues. The Dalles Daily Chronicle, Tuesday, January 6, 1891 Page Three. LOCAL BREVITIES Mr. Varney reports strawberries in blossom, a sufficient evidence of Oregon's equable climate. Mr. F.H. Stanton and Mr. Ax Rahm of Hood River (Oregon) were in the city yesterday. Honorable Henry Blackman of Heppner (Oregon) arrived here last night and left by this morning's passenger for Portland. Mr. Blackman is one of the few democrats in the state senate, and having no political axes to grind will no doubt prove a valuable member, as he is bright, quick to catch a point, and energetic in backing up anything he undertakes. Some wretch with no fear of the law, and no regard for the rights of others, last night helped himself to a set of single buggy harness belonging to Mr. Jud Fish. The thief emptied a sack filled with pitch kindling wood, and evidently used the sack to carry off the harness in. The same fellow probably stole two collars from a teamster at Books & Beers, and got away with a whip from someone else. From indications the fellow will have a horse before long, so it is well enough to lock the stable doors now. The west bound Fast Mail distinguished itself this morning by giving birth to a bouncing girl baby, or rather a woman on the Fast Mail do so. Conductor Coleman was in charge of the train and received an intimation of what was about to happen after the train left Umatilla (Oregon). A physician on the train was summoned, several kind ladies volunteered their services and the young lady was ushered into the world as the train rushed along the bank of the Columbia (river) at the rate of twenty-five miles an hour. We suggest that according to the eternal fitness of things she should be named Columbia. Thus again is the wonderful productiveness of Oregon exemplified, and the climate given another boom. Misfortunes never come singly, but they seem to have come with unusual severity on Mr. Fred Rawlins formerly train dispatcher here. Just after his resignation, his wife dislocated her ankle, and all three of his bright little children were taken down with scarlet fever. Kitty died, and, owing to the contagious nature of the disease was followed to the cemetery by her bereaved parents alone. Zaida and Mellis rallied and were thought out of danger, but this morning the sad news reached us that Mellis, the little boy, is dead. Mr. and Mrs. Rawlins have a host of friends here who sympathize deeply with them in their bereavement. Delores was a wife, mother, grandmother and one heck of a raffle ticket saleslady. She was well known and loved by many people, but especially by her family. Many thanks to the Parkdale (Oregon) Fire Department Rescue and EMT's (Emergency Medical Technicians). They worked tirelessly trying to revive her. I have no doubt they did everything possible. Many friends have come forward and flooded our family with cards, letters, food, phone calls, visits, flowers, well wishes, love, donations to charities and condolence. I don't know what we would have done without them. I'd especially like to thank the Hood River (Oregon) Elks Club to include the management, staff, officers, trustees, members and spouses. They made our entire family feel like members of the Elks family. I'd also like to thank the Hood River Valley Adult Center, the Parkdale Veteran's of Foreign Wars and the American Legion for their many cards and condolences. A special thanks to Fireman Rod Blumenthal for staying until our daughter arrived. There are so many people to thank that helped us in one way or another we may have missed. If so, please forgive us. We do thank you all. Ed Kelly and family. Surnames: Hull, Howe, Smith, Crockett, Lloyd Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/nZB.2ACE/183 Message Board Post: There's a wonderful article in the Hood River News dated 28 Sep 2002 about a Boy Scout who has chosen restoration of Frankton Cemetery, aka Backus Cemetery, as his Eagle Scout project. Unfortunately, the newspaper has apparently chosen not to show the story in its online version of the paper, but I wanted to let you know the project exists. Many local businesses and people, as well as the Hood River County Historic Museum, have become involved in the project. Thirteen graves have been found, but it is believed 27-39 people are buried at Frankton Cemetery. According to the newspaper article, the young man ". . . welcomes any historical or genealogical information pertaining to the cemetery." I hesitate to put personal information on the web, but if anyone is interested please email me privately at bpjohnston@charter.net and I will send you contact information. Beth Perry Johnston

Dear Rooters, The Oregon State Archives is pleased to announce the launch of a new searchable index. The Oregon Historical Records Index incorporates data that was originally found in three separate on-line indexes. The Genealogical Locator, the Portland Birth records and the Portland Death records are now combined and can be searched from one site. Additionally, the index has nearly doubled in size with close to 400,000 entries. Significant newly indexed records, such as the statewide delayed birth records which were transferred to the Archives from the Center for Vital Statistics, and the World War 1 personnel service records compiled by the War Historian, are now available on-line. Enhanced descriptions of the records have been included to help researchers identify what the records are likely to contain. You can view these descriptions by clicking on an entry from the list found at: http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/banners/genlist.htm This index is created in large part through the efforts of volunteers who work on flattening, refoldering, and reboxing these original records and perform the data entry. Please visit the new index: http://genealogy.state.or.us Contact the Archives staff at reference.archives@state.or.us if you wish to request copies of the records. If you have comments about the new index please send emails to me directly at layne.g.sawyer@state.or.us Happy hunting. Layne Sawyer Oregon State Archives Source: OREGON-L@rootsweb.com
A reader asked where I have my website to archive the Polk's City Directory information. I thought others might find the answer useful. ANSWER: I do not have a website. I take photocopies of the actual book and then input the information into the ORWASCO-L@rootsweb.com mail list (or the OREGON-L; ORHOODRI-L; ORSHERMA-L mail lists that you receive the information on). As you know I am inputting them in stages due to the amount of typing involved. The only archives I would have is found in their program http://archiver@rootsweb.com Enter the name ORWASCO; OREGON; ORHOODRI or ORSHERMA in the inquiry box and click on submit. By clicking on a particular year and month, a list of the submitted items have links to view them. The older items are at the top of the page and the recent items are at the bottom of the page. They are then listed by subject and submitter. Thanks to the reader for asking. Earline
