Sunday, October 27, 2002 Compiled by Elroy King 40 Years Ago, October 27, 1962 Linda Bellamy was recently elected president of the Young People's Foreign Mission Society of the First Church of the Nazarene. Other officers elected were Chuck Pryor, vice president; Adrian Herrick, secretary-treasurer; Ernie Cuff, prayer and fasting chairman; Judy McConnell, study chairman; and Lo Ann Hansell, publicity. Mrs. Tom Cuff is sponsor. 60 Years Ago, October 27, 1942 For the three weeks October 5 to October 24, inclusive, it was stated this morning by W. Wray Lawrence, Wasco county salvage committee chairman, trucks have collected and weighted in 666 tons of scrap metal, based on known figures for The Dalles and reports from salvage committee chairmen throughout Wasco County including the schools under the leadership of Frank Brumbaugh, county superintendent. The Wasco County Defense Council, at its meeting last night, discussed at length the placing in the windows of The Dalles homes the 4 by 5 inch defense sticker showing a white triangle inside a blue circle bearing the letters CD (civilian defense) in red inside the triangle with the words "We Stand Prepared" in the margins. These stickers already have been distributed to block wardens by Virgil Kelly, chief air raid warden, to be given to householders meeting the home defense requirements. 80 Years Ago, October 27, 1922 Colin E. Davis has withdrawn his name from the list of candidates to be voted on November 7, leaving but J.C. Egbert as a candidate for councilman from the first ward. The withdrawal was received yesterday afternoon by the city recorder in a letter. Burglars who foresaw the need for warm clothing during the cold winter days did their shopping last night when they entered the A.M. Williams & company store and generously outfitted themselves. This at least was the theory of Chief of Police Frank Heater after he had investigated the robbery which was reported early today. Bud Crofton and Hans Blaser chased S.J. Hamilton of Portland four miles yesterday as he was speeding down the highway. Crofton and Blaser were driving the former's Ford coupe about yesterday when Hamilton passed them. The two speed cops gave chase and finally overhauled the bigger car. Hamilton was fined $10 in the municipal court by judge D.L. Cates. 100 Years Ago, October 27, 1902 The partnership between Drs. Geisendorffer and Klebs having been dissolved, the latter has taken up rooms recently occupied by Dr. G.C. Eshelman in the Vogt building, a few doors west of their present office and will continue practice independently. Boorman, William Boorman, P.F. Cordes, S.F. Blythe, E.C. Miller, J.F. Armor, and Fred Howe. At the meeting of the alliance Wednesday night four new names were added to the list of members. Mr. Lucas Henry, lately from Nebraska, entertained the alliance in an address. Mr. Henry has had considerable experience in the work of the alliance and he gave a history of the rise and progress of that organization in Nebraska. The committee on entertainment has prepared a programme for next meeting, in which there will be addresses by Messrs, Joseph Soesbe and C.L. Gilbert. "Excelsior" was adopted as the name of the alliance. The next meeting will be held Friday night, January 16th, at Barrett school house (Hood River Glacier). LOCAL BREVITIES page Three J.H. McDonough left for San Francisco this morning to have his eyes treated. Captain Spencer who was here Saturday on a business trip returned to Portland yesterday. Mr. Eugene Price and daughter of Ellensburg, Washington, are in the city visiting old time friends. Mrs. A.H. Jewett of White Salmon (Washington), who has been visiting friends here for a week or more, returned home yesterday. Mr. J.A. Varney went to Portland yesterday, and will attend a meeting of the state horticultural society today. Hen (Honorable?) E.L. Smith has so far recovered as to be able to leave the hospital and was taken from Portland to his home in Hood River to-day. Mr. Hugh Gourlay was a passenger on yesterday's delayed train, bound for Salem (Oregon), where he will probably remain during the session of the legislature. Our old townsman, Mr. J.L. Thompson met with a terrible accident Saturday night which may leave him a cripple, or possibly cost him his life, he was a passenger on the west bound freight which leaves here at 8:10 PM. Near Bridal Vail (Oregon) the train broke in two, and Mr. Thompson went to the platform to see what was the matter. The train was not running and Mr. Thompson holding by the railing stepped off as he supposed to the ground. The night was very dark and he failed to see that he was on a trestle and so fell a distance of about twelve feet. His right leg was broken in two places above the knee. He was brought home on this morning's passenger, and is being attended by Drs. Logan and Rinehart. Condon superintendent primary department. Mr. W. McD. Lewis today took the contract for digging the ditch and bringing the water from Clear creek to the Oak Grove (Oregon) country. This ditch was begun by the Oak Grove and Juniper Flat Ditch company. The completion of this ditch will make this one of the best sections of Wasco county, and the fact that Mr. McD. Lewis has taken the contract is a sufficient guaranty that it will be done. Mr. W. McD. Lewis arrived in from Wapinitia (Oregon) Tuesday evening, on his way to Portland and thence to Salem. He informs us that there has been more rain in the country around Wapinitia than between that place and The Dalles. He has made a proposition to the Wapinitia folks to complete the Clear lake ditch, and it is probable arrangements will be made by which the work will be done in the spring. It would be of immense benefit to three or four townships, and should be completed as soon as possible. PROBATE COURT In the matter of the estate of Daniel Bolton, deceased. Hearing of final account, ordered and adjudged that the administration of said estate be allowed to be closed, and said estate fully settled. In the matter of the estate of W.H.
