    1. [ORHOODRI] [Admin] Happy Thanksgiving and Best Wishes for the Holidays
    2. Beth Perry Johnston
    3. Greetings and best wishes for the holidays to all! Now that the holidays are here, we all get a little busier and perhaps don't spend as much time at the computer as usual, but perhaps the best gift we could give someone would be a link or clue to that elusive ancestor, so I think a roll call is in order. There are a couple of rules, though: --The subject line should contain enough information to make it useful, i.e., at least the locality / surname(s) you're interested in and if possible a date to set the time frame. A subject line that says just "Roll Call" is not sufficient. If you've really hit a brick wall, using a subject such as "Looking for Information on John Doe Smith" is fine. --There is to be no flaming or personal attacks. If the information you have doesn't agree with the information someone else posts, you're welcome to discuss the differences on the list but do it in a civil manner. The purpose of the roll call is to share information about our families with others, so if you have information to add to or questions about a roll call posting, feel free to join the discussion. Now, back to the turkey! Beth

    2. Pete Wasser
    3. The Dalles Chronicle, November 17, 2002 40 Years Ago, November 17, 1962 Indicted slayer-suspect Edward Willis Sheckler became a Wasco County jail resident Friday. Gilliam County Sheriff Volney Thomas brought Sheckler here for confinement pending psychiatric examination of the suspect. Wasco county officer's said Thomas indicated this procedure will begin in Portland next Friday. Sheckler was indicted by the Gilliam County grand jury and is accused in the fatal shooting of State Policeman Ralph Bates the evening of November 8 on the Oregon Trail highway east of Arlington (Oregon). Ross R. Rakow's victory margin in the Superior Court judgeship race was reduced to 33 votes when absentee votes in the November 6 election were counted. Judge Rakow, a write-in candidate, held a 79-vote lead over Edward P. Reed, before the absentee votes were counted. 60 Years Ago, November 17, 1942 Eric Johnson, member of the Wasco County salvage committee, is getting everything lined up today for loading two railroad cars with scrap metals from the local salvage piles this week for shipment to war smelters. The actual labor will be performed by a crew under the direction of Vernon Obrist. Galvanized metal, fenders and light pieces of scrap will be placed in one of the cars and the heavier scrap metal in the other. 80 Years Ago, November 17, 1922 Miss Pearl Emory of Vancouver (Washington) arrived in The Dalles this week to take the place of Miss Gertrude Southworth as the teacher of penmanship in the high school. Miss Emory is a graduate of the Benke-Walker business college in Portland. Two declarations of intention to become United States citizens were filed at the office of the county clerk this morning. Edward T. King and Johnny Conroy, both natives of Ireland, were those making the declarations. 1. [ORHOODRI] Sgt. First Class William Smith's 'big sand box'
    2. Pete Wasser
    3. The Dalles Chronicle November 15, 2002 by John Huffman So you haven't seen Oregon National Guard recruiter SFC Bill Smith around The Dalles armory or the ropes course up at The Dalles High School lately? It's because he volunteered for an approximate nine-month deployment with the 1-186th Infantry Regiment out of Ashland (Oregon) to Sinai, Egypt. Sgt. Smith is one of 520 Oregon National Guard troops deployed to the Sinai peninsula as part of a peace-keeping mission knows as MFO (Multinational Force and Observers) keeping guard, keeping watch over the Sinai, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aqaba and the air space. Smith, a recruiter, wears a number of hats. He's a counselor; 520 soldiers a long way from home need someone to talk to so he's kind of the chaplain assistant's assistant. He's also responsible for recruitment retentions. He organizes recreation trips to places like Cairo, Egypt and Elat, Israel. Smith, a mountain climber, also received permission to build a climbing wall and begin training soldiers to properly climb, count on each other and work as a team. Smith ended up with about eight volunteers for his first ropes training class in Egypt on October 31. Sgt. First Class William Smith and 519 other Oregon National Guard Soldiers can't wait for the Oklahoma Guard to relieve them the end of January 2003. In the meantime, they are keeping peace in the Sinai. 3. Transcriber's Note: I've refrained from copying articles that do not include names of residents, some of the colloquial terms we'll have to guess at the meaning of, present day capitals used on certain words were not used then. Fraternity names and organizations I am not familiar with. Advertisements placed in the newspaper were coded for easy identification in later issues. The Dalles Daily Chronicle, Saturday, January 17, 1891, Front page. The masquerade last night was a success financially and otherwise of which Jackson Engine Company, may justly feel proud. There were thirty-six maskers, and the hall was filled to its utmost capacity with spectators. There were several elegant costumes but as we cannot mention each as being the most beautiful, we are compelled to forego the pleasure of mentioning any except the prize winners. We know The Dalles and know when we are well off. Mrs. Richard Barker, as a Spanish girl, took first prize, a plush work case; Mrs. Mat Blazen, as nurse girl, securing the second, plush collar and cuff box; Julius Fisher, as a marine, took first gentleman's prize, a gold headed cane, and Julius Wiley as North Dalles tramp, a fine bronze table gong. Everybody was well pleased with the evenings entertainment, and we are glad indeed to note the fact. LOCAL BREVITIES page three Mr. Richard Barker of Nansene (Oregon) is in the city, he informs us that but little rain has fallen in that neighborhood, not enough to make plowing possible. The many friends of Mrs. Lulu D. Sampson will be pleased to learn that she has been appointed clerk of the senate committee of commerce. There was a pleasant social gathering of young folks at Mr. Wentz's residence Thursday night on the occasion of Miss Lena's birthday. The feature of the evening which afforded lots of amusement, was the "blind auction". A LEADER (newspaper) reporter visited The Dalles CHRONICLE office Monday evening and found the best equipped office east of the mountains. Cradlebaugh is making a success of the new paper. (Klickitat Leader). Mr. H.A. Moss at one time resident agent of the O.R.& N. Company, at Portland and now manager for a large company at Coos bay (Oregon), is in the city. Mr. Moss came over to be present at the marriage of Miss Nellie Lusher, his wife's sister. MARRIED At the residence of the brides parents in this city, January 17th, Miss Nellie Lusher, daughter of Mrs. Rudolph Lusher of this city to Mr. George St. John of Tacoma (Washington). The bride is a native of The Dalles and one of its most charming young ladies. Mr. St. John carrying away one of our brightest girls, brings to mind forcibly those lines of Hood's: "Were there no beauteous dames at home And no true lovers here, That he should come so far to win The dearest of the dear." We join a host of friends in wishing the young couple unbounded prosperity and a long and happy life. They left for their future home, Tacoma this morning. WE THANK YOU The Dalles, January 16, 1891 At a regular meeting of the W.C.T.U. the following resolution was unanimously adopted: Resolved, That this Union present a vote of thanks to the Dramatic Club for their gift of one hundred dollars, the proceeds of the drama, "A Celebrated Case". The gift has come in a time of need, the Union being in debt for literature, wood and light. They also desire to thank the public who so generously responded to the call to help the reading room. Mrs. S. French, Secretary REAL ESTATE TRANSACTION The Dalles Land and Improvement Company to R.E.L. Simmons, lot one in block seventeen, of Thompson's addition to Dalles City. BORN In this city Friday, January 16, 1891, to the wife of Dr. J.G. Boyd, a daughter. Charles Haight over hauled his ice chart recently the same not having been in use since last fall, and the present weather indicating the approach of spring. He discovered that a rat had somehow got shut up in the box presumably three months ago. When the box was opened the rat was found not only alive but actually fat. The rat had devoured all the lining of the safe, and if given a few more weeks would have eaten it up entirely, thus surrounding his surroundings. It is a pity he was disturbed for we verily believe that he would have "eaten himself out of house and home". 3. Susan, I don't have any info on their marriage, but I do have birth and death dates for them both.. and Myron's tree back to abt 1600. Did they have any children?? I don't have any listed for them. Myron would have been my great grandfather's Brother. (my maiden name was Whitecotton) Sorry I don't have any marriage info on them.... Let me know if you would like any other info. Actually.. now that I think about it, I think that perhaps Myron is buried in the same area as the rest of the Whitecotton family in the Pine Grove Cemetery. I went there this spring and took some photo's and I belive I remember seeing his headstone too... Wonder if Hazel is buried with him? 3. No Franz in my family, sorry! Here is a list of some of my Surnames. Whitecotton, LeMaster, Vanalstine, Henson, Wonsyld, Moore, Betz, Lindley, Pratt Also trying to find information on the Belts family. Charles Harvey and Christine Belts. They came from Ill to Pendleton, then to Hood River. We own their house. it was built in 1907, when they both died, their niece ( i belive.. or their estate) sold the house to my husbands grandparents (in 1960) We are the 3rd owners of the house. When we moved in there was a book shelf full of old books that my husbands grandmother gave to me so she didn't have to mess with. I opened them up and found that they were books owned by the original owners! Inside of the set of encyclopedia's are newspaper clippings, some as old as 1919. Each clipping is filed into the appropriate place in the encyclopedia ( Article about a president, filed under president etc). Also is a diploma of sorts when Harvey finished contractors school and a note of recomendation written in 1901 and several 4 leaf clovers. From what I know, I don't think that they had any children.. and were taken back to ILL to be buried. Living in the house that they built and lived in for almost 60 years, I would love to know more about them. 3. The Dalles Chronicle, November 10, 2002 20 Year Ago, November 10, 1982 Wasco County employees have agreed to a wage reduction agreement drafted by the county court, and although nothing has been signed it appears there is no problem with the pact County Judge Rick Cantrell said today. Cantrell said he had attempted to contact Kim Korshoj, of the Federation of Federal, State and County and Municipal Employees this morning but found Korshoj was out of town. However, said it was nearly two weeks since a letter outlining the agreement had been sent to the union and nothing negative has been heard. 40 Years Ago, November 10, 1962 Among the winners in the "Make it Yourself with Wool" finals held in Portland was Jo Morast of The Dalles, who won the nod for best dress. The senior championship went to Sandra Kay Olson of Salem (Oregon) and the junior championship to Janet Moberg of Battle Ground, Washington. 60 Years Ago, November 10, 1942 Miss Ruby Thompson, executive secretary of the American Red Cross in this city, stated today that for the first time a woman, and not a man, has been chosen in the person of Mrs. Lyle Hickok as chairman for the Red Cross roll call and war relief drive, which will be put on in March 1943. The change from a man to a woman was made, she said, because of the war conditions. This action was taken at the regular monthly meeting held in the county courtroom last night. So many automobile tires, in excess of the five allowed by the government to each car owner, have been delivered by Wasco County people to the Railway Express Agency here, that The Dalles office has room for little else. Nearly 300 tires a day have been deposited in this city at the express office, and though they are shipped out on every train to the U.S. warehouses for appraisal and payment, all forms for pasting on the tires received were used up by the midafternoon yesterday. 80 Year Ago, November 10, 1922 Officers of the local chapter of the Oregon State Retail Merchants were chosen last night in a meeting at Hotel Dalles. L.A. Schanno was elected president; H.S. Rice, vice president; and J.T. Henry, treasurer, Ernest Cramer and Bert Thomas were chosen members of the local board of governors, which is made up of five persons, including the president, vice president and treasurer. 100 Year's Ago, November 10, 1902 Mrs. A. Hardy's dancing school will open at the Baldwin hall, Tuesday night, at 8 o'clock sharp. Instruction in dancing will be given until the hour of 11. Good music will be furnished by the school. A general invitation is extended to all of good reputation. Class of adults, one term including twelve lessons, $6. Lessons will be given twice a week, every Tuesday and Thursday evening. SERVED HIM RIGHT Front page Portland, Jan 13 - Harry Carson, of Astoria (Oregon), was convicted to-day in the U.S. court of the charge of sending an obscene letter through the mails. LOCAL BREVITIES Mr. Eugene Price leaves for home to-day. Mr. A.C. Sanford, of Wasco (Oregon) is in the city. Mr. C.P. Heald, one of Hood River's (Oregon) most prominent fruit-growers is in the city. Mr. F.H. Lee editor of that wide awake paper the Klickitat Leader (Washington) was in the city yesterday. Last Thursday Mrs. Smith of Grant (Sherman county), a lady of 82 years, fractured her thigh, by slipping while getting into bed. Frank Rutledge, the man injured so badly by the powder explosion last week, died yesterday morning. He was 24 years of age and unmarried. Mr. Deerhake has so far recovered from his wound as to be able to get down stairs, which he did for the first time yesterday. His brother is with him. Mr. C.W. Nibley of Salt Lake City (Utah), one of the principle members of the Oregon Lumber company, whose mills are located at Hood River, and at North Powder (Oregon) is in the city. Mr. Amos Underwood one of Skamania's county (Washington) commissioners and his brother Edward, were in the city yesterday. They are pioneers of that county, and have one of the finest farms in it. B.F. Loughlin lost a set of double buggy harness Saturday night, and Alex Thompson and West. Rice each lost a set of single harness the same night. Whoever it is stealing, is evidently intending to go into the harness business or else to start a livery stable. Mr. J. Craft, of Deschutes (Oregon), made us a pleasant call this morning. He says he like the CHRONICLE very well, that several cases of diphtheria have occurred in that neighborhood, one death, that of Arthur Clawson the nine-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Clawson, resulted from it last week. The school in District 30 is temporary closed; and a new school building is being erected. Mr. W. Pashek of Fifteen Mile had stopped his team yesterday afternoon in front of Mr. Vogt's store, and had just got out of his wagon, when a locomotive passing across Washington street whistled. This frightened the horses, and they turned sharp around cramping the wagon and breaking the tongue. Before Mr. Pashek could catch them they had got under headway; turning the corner at the CHRONICLE office they ran up Second street to Brooks & Beers where they stopped. There were forty dozen eggs in a box in the wagon when the team started, but when Mr. Pashek examined their remains, he smiled and felt grateful that eggs are only worth fifteen cents a dozen. The horses were uninjured and ten dollars will cover the entire loss. THE NEW OFFICERS List of the Officers Who Are in Charge of the M.E. Sabbath School.
