Fraternity names and organizations I am not familiar with. Advertisements placed in the newspaper were coded for easy identification in later issues. The Dalles Daily Chronicle, Thursday, January 22, 1891, page two Sandy Olds is to have another trial, his fourth one for the killing of Emil Webber. This time he gets a change of venue and will be tried in Washington county. It is safe to say that he will not be convicted of murder in the first degree since the supreme court has virtually held three times that his offence was not of that degree. The case has been a peculiar one, and illustrates the fact that the law can be given a hard chase, in its pursuit of criminals, if the race is properly managed. LOCAL BREVITIES page Three A.J. Wall of Eight Mile, made us a pleasant call to-day. Frank W. Mitchell, head bookkeeper for Mitchell & Lewis of Portland, is in the city. Sidney Young returned this morning from Salem (Oregon) where he has been visiting friends for several days. J.A. Anderson shipped two double-decked carloads of sheep to the sound (Puget Sound?) and Victoria (British Columbia, Canada?) Wednesday night. School Superintendent Shelby who has been visiting the school at Cascade Locks (Oregon) came up on this morning's train. Deerhake who shot himself some time ago, is nearly recovered and we understand expects to start home in a few days. Mr. Henry Deckert, who fell down the stairs at the Jackson House Monday is paralyzed on his right side from the injuries received. The forfeited railroad lands are now open for settlement and Mr. Hugh Gourlay, made the first application at this office under the new law to-day. We had the pleasure of examining specimens of coal from the Fossil (Oregon) mines yesterday. They were shown by Mr. Norton, and are certainly of excellent quality. Captain George Thompson tried some of this coal in his forge and is highly pleased with it, claiming it is nearly as good as Cumberland. An article elsewhere in this issue is good reading on the subject. Mr. George W. Smith brought to this office to-day a specimen of both wheat and barley grown on Mr. W.N. Crawford's place in Klickitat county (Washington), seven miles from The Dalles. The specimens were grown in the field, and they are both headed out. The stalks are eighteen inches in length and can be seen in the windows of the CHRONICLE'S office, an unanswerable argument on the equableness** of our climate, and prolific character of our soil. DIED In this city January 22d, at 1 o'clock a.m. Mrs. Nettie Bost. The funeral took place this afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Bost moved here from the Big Bend, during the winter. Mrs. Bost is the daughter of John Hinkle of Silverton (Oregon). She leaves a family of five children. The Dalles Daily Chronicle, Tuesday, January 20, 1891, Front page MADE AN ARREST AT LAST Joe Day Arrests An Escaped Convict in Portland. Portland, OR. Jan. 20 - Detective Joseph Day arrested William Long alias Jones this morning. Long was in November, 1887, convicted of a burglary in San Diego county, California, and sentenced to twelve years in the San Quentin penitentiary. While being conveyed to prison by Sheriff Long he eluded the officer at Oakland (California) wharf and has till now avoided recapture. LOCAL BREVITIES page three Mr. Henry Sexton of Wasco (Oregon) is in the city. Mr. H.C. Rooper of Bake Oven (Oregon) is in the city. Master Frank French left to-day to attend the university at Salem (Oregon). R.F. Gibons is confined to his home with an attack of sciatic rheumatism. Mr. Charles Rosenfeld of the Rosenfeld - Smith Company of Portland is in the city. Mr. J. Blumlein, representing Mason, Ehrman & Company of Portland is here on a business visit. Honorable O.M. Scott, county judge of Sherman county, honored the CHRONICLE office with a visit this afternoon. J.M. Rogers of Boyd (Oregon) returned home Saturday from a short visit to Missouri, the home of his father. He formed a partnership while there with a nice young lady and brought her home with him. We wish him and his young wife a prosperous and happy life. It looks very much as though the tramps who stole the outfit from the box car Sunday night and hid it under Saltmarshe's platform had intended to set fire to some building in that portion of the town that they might get a chance to plunder houses left unguarded. Harness-stealing seems to be a favorite avocation with petty thieves in Pendleton (Oregon) at present. Several citizens have lately had harness and other articles stolen from their barns. Saturday night the stable of Levy Hays, who lives on Nob Hill, was entered, and a set of double harness taken. So far there is no clue to the robber, who will probably soon open a harness store in some other town. (East OREGONIAN). Monday evening Mrs. Watson who had been up the road on a hand car, on his way home discovered that some wretch had bolted two fish plates together and placed them on the track near the willows above town. There was an evident intent to wreck a train, and the attempt was foiled more by good luck than anything else. Hanging is not severe punishment enough for this offence but unfortunately it is the limit beyond which we cannot go. The attempt to wreck a train should be made a capital offence. Colonel Nevins arrived home from Salem (Oregon) to-day. Mr. S. Husbands, of Mosier (Oregon), is in the city. Mr. Husbands is reconciled as to the destiny of the new county project. Honorable E.L. Eastham, member of the Oregon Legislature died at his home in Oregon city (Oregon) last Sunday morning. Misses Lillie and Clara Allen left this morning for Rockford, Illinois to attend school. Mrs. DeLyle accompanied them. George Bancroft, the eminent Historian, died in Washington city, D.C., on the 17th inst. (instant) after a brief illness. He was born in 1800. Messrs. Printz & Nitschke are having the old platform and rubbish cleaned off the lot adjoining the store occupied by Snipes & Kinersly for the purpose of building for themselves a store for their furniture business in the coming season. The young ladies Shakespearean club met with Miss Iva Brooks last evening and had an enjoyable season reading Othello. Such gatherings are very profitable as the acquaintance with standard authors assists in literary acquirements. BOARD OF TRADE MEETING Board met at their rooms last night, A.S. Macallister, president; and B.S. Huntington secretary, both being present and the attendance being fair. Acommittee consisting of A.S. Macallister, Robert Mays and G.T. Farley were appointed to go to Salem and urge the passage of Senator Watkins' postage bill, and to look after such other matters as are of interest to Wasco county. Honorable C.M. Cartwright and A.J. However, that sign has been there for more years than I care to remember, yet everyone used the final "e," and as your father-in-law pointed out it's still on cemetery paperwork. Beth

Also.. on the Idlewilde/Idlewild thing. My father in law says he doesn't know of any "formal" reason that it was changed (e dropped) or that it even was. He said he believes that on their checks and the sign it still has the "e". I'll have to drive by and pay attention one of these days :)

Surnames: Crowe Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/nZB.2ACE/185.1 Message Board Post: As far as I know, the most comprehensive listing of Hood River County cemeteries is found here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~orhoodri/hrcems.htm . Also as far as I know, none of Hood River's cemetery burials have been transcribed, and I've found only one cemetery with email, and that's Idlewilde Cemtery -- you can click on that link in the above URL if you'd like to send a message asking whether the Crowes are buried there. Idlewilde Cemetery would be a good start as it is by far the largest cemetery in Hood River County. Beyond that, their place of burial could depend on what part of the valley they lived in or their religion. Also, the deaths you report are recent enough that perhaps someone who reads this message board or its corresponding mailing list might know in which cemetery to look and will respond to your message. Best wishes, Beth

Even as late as 1977 that name was used on paperwork. Does anyone know when or why the final e was dropped off the cemetery's name?
