Born in > Eugene, Oregon August 28, 1931, she married Benjamin Albert Benedict in > Eugene, Oregon, June 17 1951. They were married 54 years. Ellen obtained > her Ph. D. degree from Portland State University in 1978 in Environmental > Sciences and Resources - Biology. She taught biology at Portland State > University and Malheur Field Station, and served as an adjunct professor > of Biology at Pacific University. Her scientific research included the > systematics and biogeography of pseudoscorpions, and the ecology of > caves, with publications in the Journal of Arachnology as well as Caves > and Other Volcanic Landforms of Central Oregon, Guidebook NSS Geology & > Biology Fieldtrip 1982; A Self-Guided Auto Tour of Diamond Craters, > Oregon Geologic Gem; and other professional and popular articles. She has > edited: North American Biospeleology (four years), Oregon DAR Newsletter > (eight years) and The Forum Insider (four years). For most of 1980, she > had been employed by the Burns District of the Bureau of Land Management > in an on-site study of Diamond Craters that culminated in its > establishment as an Outstanding Natural Area (ONA). A fellow of the > National Speleological Society, she chaired the 1982 N.S.S. Convention in > Bend, Oregon, in keeping with her long and continuing interest in the > lava caves and flora and fauna of Eastern Oregon. Ellen is survived by > husband Benjamin, four sons and one daughter; Mark (Vancouver, WA), Earl > (Eugene, OR), Lyle (Chicago, IL), Alice Knapp (Apple Valley, CA), & Alan > (Tacoma, WA), and nine grandchildren. > A past officer of the Genealogical Forum of Oregon, Inc., she joined the > National Genealogical Society in 1990, and was the National Program > Chairman for the 1991 NGS Conference in the States.
