Social Security does not make its Death Master File (DMF) available online. Social Security maintains a file of death information known as the DMF. Under the Freedom of Information Act, we are required to disclose the Public DMF to members of the public. The Public DMF is a listing of reports of death that the Social Security Act allows us to disclose. The Public DMF does not contain information where SSA's only source of that data was a State record of death. Further, the Public DMF is not a complete listing of every death in the United States. Although the Public DMF is not available online from Social Security, the United States Department of Commerce's National Technical Information Service (NTIS) offers a subscription service for <http://www.ntis.gov/products/ssa-dmf.aspx> online queries of the Public Death Master File through their website. Please note that other parties have purchased SSA's Death Master File Extract through NTIS and then posted it on their own websites.
