Peggy, and others I know that ancestry.com is worth it to many to pay for it. But not for me. Guess I am not serious researcher. I have a couple of brick walls that will likely stay that way. They have many employees doing this work. They also have the most amazing collection of records, well beyond what any other service has -- passenger list images (not found on the Ellis Island web site), city directories, etc. As a professional genealogist, Ancestry.com is my number one go to place for genealogical records. The free services just don't have the breadth and depth of information, although, I also use them. You are not paying for public records, you are paying for the effort that goes into making them available, in an easy to search interface.
