    1. [GFO] Reminder...no Illinois Interest meeting in January.
    2. Kristy Gravlin
    3. I'm sure you were looking forward to the meeting this month... BUT it is December! The month when people are continuously behind with their letter writing... their cooking... their shopping... their cleaning... and their rest. So we never meet in December. That will give you one more day to get your act together before things need to be done. We'll be back in January...so watch for us then on the 14th at 9:30 a.m. Kristy, Harlene, Duane and all

    1. [GFO] Virginia Interest Group-Saturday, December 3, 10 am.
    2. The Virginia Interest Group will meet Saturday, December 3 at 10 am. This month's presentation will be "Virginia Migration Routes". Worn out land, overcrowding, new immigrants and most importantly, the availability of free or low cost land led to surges of migration through and out of Virginia and mandated new roads through frontier areas. Learn how and why particular routes developed, and how this knowledge will assist your genealogy research and give you a better understanding of your ancestors' lives. I hope to see you all on Saturday, December 3. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Judi Scott

    3. Please note the following extracted from the SSA website with regard to the availability of the DMF online. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Online availability of SSA's Death Master File Updated 10/20/2011 09:57 AM | ID# 149 Does Social Security make its Death Master File available online for the purposes of genealogical research? Social Security does not make its Death Master File (DMF) available online. Social Security maintains a file of death information known as the DMF. Under the Freedom of Information Act, we are required to disclose the Public DMF to members of the public. The Public DMF is a listing of reports of death that the Social Security Act allows us to disclose. The Public DMF does not contain information where SSA's only source of that data was a State record of death. Further, the Public DMF is not a complete listing of every death in the United States. Although the Public DMF is not available online from Social Security, the United States Department of Commerce's National Technical Information Service (NTIS) offers a subscription service for <http://www.ntis.gov/products/ssa-dmf.aspx> online queries of the Public Death Master File through their website. Please note that other parties have purchased SSA's Death Master File Extract through NTIS and then posted it on their own websites. Although these private parties call/refer to their own websites as SSA's death index or SSA's Death Master File, these are not endorsed by Social Security, nor can Social Security confirm that these private websites are kept up-to-date or accurate with our death data. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thus as replied by Krampetz one must go to the various sites with the SSDI (Social Security Death Index.) as it is not available to the general public online. To purchase (if you could), a CD or DVD copy of the DMF would cost $1825.00.... 1. [GFO] GFO Writers' Forum meeting on Saturday!!
    2. Hello Aspiring Writers, The Writers' Forum will meet on Saturday, November 12th, from 11:45 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. at the Genealogical Forum of Oregon. We meet the second Saturday of each month. Everyone is welcome, whether you have participated before or not. This is your chance to get started writing or improve your writing, whether you are writing for yourself or for others. We learn about good writing techniques -- write and read what we write to each other. Without exception, everyone who has participated in this group over the last seven years writes better than they did when they started. This year we are working with Roy Peter Clark's Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer published by Little, Brown and Company in 2006. Each year we work with a book, but this particular book has been the most helpful of any book we worked with. Now we are working more specifically on language and at this meeting we will be working with Tool 25 Workshop: "Learning the Difference Between Reports and Stories." Bring your lunch if you would like. Peggy ------------------------ Peggy Baldwin, MLS Family Passages LLC www.family-passages.com

    3. Hello everyone, On Saturday Tom O'Brien mentioned in one of his classes at the Family History Fair about us going to loose out on the SSDI soon. Today on a bloggers posting, GenaMusings, I found a link to the following bit of information. I am not posting that bloggers full words but giving you the website for your own reading as it is long and has links to other bits and pieces about this action by the government. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Changes to the Public Death Master File (DMF) and the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ http://stephendanko.com/blog/15164 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Effective today, 01 November 2011, the Social Security Administration (SSA) changed its policy on what records it will use as source material for adding new entries in the Public Death Master File (DMF) which, in turn, is used to create the Social Security Death Index (SSDI). The Agency decided that it can no longer use state death records to add new entries to the DMF. Furthermore, the SSA will remove approximately 4.2 million records currently on the SSDI because those entries were made based on information from state death records. I have reproduced a fact sheet about the change later in this post. You can download the original Fact Sheet from the Social Security Administration's website. The National Technical Information Service which distributes the DMF on the web has also issued an Important Notice about this change. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (There is more and if you wish to read it follow the link to Stephens blog that I have posted above. 3. What a wonderful guy! Both Jay and Sue Balfour gave and gave to the Forum. Their cheerful faces were busy in the publishing shop every Tuesday I worked as an RA, back at the Neighbors of Woodcraft, now Tiffany Bldg. Good people, in every way. We became great friends. Went to their 50 wedding - they were charming. Sue did many other things for genealogical research and Jay was always there with her. He enjoyed his Navy reserve group. Cannot say enough about these special people. I believe they are on our honored placques...and deserve to be in every way. It was fun that they took the time to find our about myself and my 4-H days in Washington Co. We had a meeting in our home garage shop about planning for the move to Gideon Street when my husband Dick helped design the setting. ( I shared my sewing project - tailoring a coat with Sue) Their dedication to the Forum deserves a really great article about what all they did and how well they did it. We have kept in touch every Christmas - this is one of the special things about the Forum and our friendships. Pat Burling
