Just a reminder that the Computer Special Interest Group will be having our bi-monthly meeting this coming Saturday February 18th from 9:30 to 11:30 AM in the rear of the library. (the Higgins Area?) In accord with our objective to investigate genealogical programs, a presentation will be made by Sue LeBlanc of the PAF program. (Personal Ancestral File which is free and is available via the LDS website familysearch.org) This will be a great opportunity to get an overview of this widely used software. Handouts will be available. After a lunch break, the Master Genealogist Software Users Group meeting will start at Noon and go til 2 PM. The program's publisher has finally released a new version (8) with many improvements. We will be taking a "look under the hood" at some of them. As always there will be a question and (hopefully) answer session as well. If anyone is has already found new features that are helpful and would like to share that discovery I encourage you to attend. This should be an interesting meeting. Hello Aspiring Writers, The Writers' Forum will meet on Saturday, February 11th, from 11:45 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. at the Genealogical Forum of Oregon. We meet the second Saturday of each month. Everyone is welcome, whether you have participated before or not. This is your chance to get started writing or improve your writing, whether you are writing for yourself or for others. We learn about good writing techniques -- write and read what we write to each other. Without exception, everyone who has participated in this group over the last seven years writes better than they did when they started. This year we are working with Roy Peter Clark's Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer published by Little, Brown and Company in 2006. Each year we work with a book, but this particular book has been the most helpful of any book we worked with. Now we are working more specifically on language and at this meeting we will be working with Tool 27 Workshop: "Reveal Traits of Character." Bring your lunch if you would like. Virus's have changed in the last 10 years, they come into your computers via a different path than they did back then. Your software can only be updated AFTER a malicious program is found. There is an additional thing everyone needs to do, and that is never never (add more never's as needed) Never, Download and run any file from a stranger (& be wary of friends ID's, as ID's can be faked!). And while I'm mentioning it, stay away from unknown web sites (some of those nasty emails can point to one instead of attaching their malware).. Did you know you can get infected by a malicious web page? That's why you also should have malicious web site blocking software too.. Bob In a message dated 01/18/12 11:13:43 A.M. Pacific Standard Time, ndhsr@yahoo.com writes: Hi everyone, Just thought I would tell you about a problem to be aware of. I found out myself the hard way. Maybe some of you already know about this? I kept getting pop up after pop up several times a day to download upgrades from Java and Adobe. I just kept closing them because I did not feel like I need upgrades from them. Finally about a month ago is when I got attacked by a virus. The computer guy told me why I got hit by this virus. He said those upgrades from Adobe and Java were critical upgrades. Some computer geek discovered that there were flaws in Adobe and Java’s programs that would allow you to bypass a computer’s security system. That is why they wanted you to upgrade your program. Finally some slime ball figured it out that, that is what those upgrades were for, figured out where the flaws were and then started sending out viruses to every computer on earth so the ones that did not decide to download those upgrades were vulnerable through those flaws in Adobe and Java which allows the virus to bypass their security and mess up their computer. That is what happened to me. I got hit with this virus and had to take it in to get it fixed. I don’t know if you were aware of this problem. If you aren’t and you have gotten a pop up to download Java and Adobe upgrades you better do it as fast as you can! Nathan
This is for all of you with fancy phones that you can send e-mail on. get what ever software it takes to lock them down. The bad guys are going in and mining data off of them and sending out porn etc. I have had several family members and friends that this has happened to. That also reminds me for you that don't know the proper protocol when sending out something to several people via e-mail. DO NOT put every ones address in the "To: or Cc" always use the Bcc: This makes it harder I am told to pull off the addresses to use for sending out bogus e-mails and viruses/worms etc. Also when forwarding stuff ALWAYS cut off all the old addresses for the same reason. None of us want porn, junk mail fro Viagra etc and the last thing any of us needs is a virus or worm. Happy computing. Janice

In case of possible closures at the GFO library (503) 963-1932, please call the library to be sure it is open before making the trip in. Some of our volunteers live at the higher elevations and may not be able to make it to the library. Cathy

Dear Abby, I have always wanted to have my family history traced, but I can't afford to spend a lot of money to do it. Any suggestions? Sam in California. Dear Sam, Register as a Republican, and run for public office. Abby
Mim, I'll take a look at the city directory collection when I'm at the GFO on Saturday, then let you know what it shows. You may already be aware of the following but in case you are not I decided to include it. The Foundation Company had shipyards in the following locations: Brunswick, GA Savannah, GA Kearny, NJ Newark, NJ New Orleans, LA Portland, OR Tacoma, WA There is a photo of the shipyard that was taken in 1918 at the following web site. It lists the book in which the photo exists. http://content.lib.washington.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/fishimages&CISOPTR=45053&CISOBOX=1&REC=7 Tom O'Brien
Oops. Sorry my request was entered twice and thanks to all those who gave me information.
Can anyone tell me where the Foundation Company shipyard in Portland was located? From June to December 1918 they built wooden cargo ships for use in WW I to provide food for the French. A cousin in my family was a carpenter there in 1918 and died that year because of an infected splinter in his finger.

to join the group on Saturday morning January 14th from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the GFO Library at 11th and Division to experience a program by Tom O'Brien on what's old and what's new in doing genealogy research. We used to do some things that seemed exciting... and now look dreadfully slow and cumbersome. And now we do some things that seem all but miraculous and will soon change to something even easier and faster. You may see something you used to do... Or something you do now... Or something you will soon be learning to do... It's a fun set of memories and future "what's next?" methods. All are welcome. Just come and join the crew. Bring a friend or two if you know someone who would like to get started in genealogy and/or computing. Kristy, Harlene, and Tom...for Illinois Interest
