Just watched the youtube video from the National Archives on the 1940 Census. If you have not seen it, I think it is worth your time. Find it at _http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXY1pHEf5hU_ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXY1pHEf5hU)
I want to pass along some importnat information. You may work on other states while waiting for your state to come up. If you are not signed up for indexing please do so today. With the release of the 1940 census being less than a week away, we wanted to reach out with answers to a couple of frequently asked questions: 1) When will my state be available to index? The best way to know if your state is available to index is to check the Current Projects page on the indexing website. Check back frequently to see if your state is posted. Remember, it may take up to two weeks to make all of the states available for indexing but some states will be completed within a matter of hours after release. 2) Will I be able to index records at the county level? No. Indexing will occur at the state level. With the complexity of the census, it is not possible to efficiently post records by county. Thank you for your involvement in this monumental project!

Hello Aspiring Writers, The Writers' Forum will meet on Saturday, March 10th, from 11:45 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. at the Genealogical Forum of Oregon. We meet the second Saturday of each month. Everyone is welcome, whether you have participated before or not. This is your chance to get started writing or improve your writing, whether you are writing for yourself or for others. We learn about good writing techniques -- write and read what we write to each other. Without exception, everyone who has participated in this group over the last seven years writes better than they did when they started. This year we are working with Roy Peter Clark's Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer published by Little, Brown and Company in 2006. Each year we work with a book, but this particular book has been the most helpful of any book we worked with. Now we are working more specifically on language and at this meeting we will be working with Tool 28 Workshop: "Putting Odd and Interesting Things Next to Each Other." Bring your lunch if you would like, especially if you would like to stay for the GFO monthly meeting. Peggy ------------------------ Peggy Baldwin, MLS Family Passages LLC www.family-passages.com
Virginia Group Meeting, Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 10 am. Peggy Baldwin has a great presentation for us: Using Virginia’s Personal and Land Taxes to Solve Problems .
It's that time again! So gather your album, supplies and heritage photos and join us for an afternoon of fun on Sunday from 1:00 to 4:40. We do have some papers available for your use. And I'll bring cutting tools to share. If you prefer digital scrapbooking, bring your laptop. I notice on line that there are many, MANY digital programs available. Just Google "digital scrapbooking" to see all the options out there. Maybe one of them will peak your interest. A couple of them got my attention: Scrapgirls.com appears to have quite a few digital heritage packages, and Viovio.com has lots of options for digital online books. I'm currently using the Creative Memories digital program if you'd like to see how it works. Hope you can join us. Bonnie LaDoe
The GFO will be participating in the First Friday openhouse March 2, 2012 to be held at the Ford Building from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. At the present time, only the basement level tenants plan to be involved and we hope this will be an every-month affair. Please feel free to join us this Friday to do some of your own research or to be available to answer visitors' quiestions.

Virginia Group Meeting, Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 10 am. Peggy Baldwin has a great presentation for us: Using Virginia’s Personal and Land Taxes to Solve Problems Tax records are one of the most available and reliable sources of information about where your Virginia ancestors lived and/or owned land. Because many early Virginia records have not survived, including deeds and census, tax records fill in the gaps. Taxes were taken every year and help show our ancestor’s migratory pattern.
