    1. [GFO] Saturday Morning's Illinois Interest Class
    2. Kristy Gravlin
    3. the June meeting of the Illinois Interest Group--9:30-11:30 The topic of the day is: ³Places I¹ve Seen in Illinois² combined with ³Places I¹d Like to See in Illinois² Some of the group has been lucky enough to actually get to Illinois where they may have been able to do some researching... and certainly were able to see some sights/sites that they can tell the others about. Have you researched there? What County? What did they have that really caught your eye? Did you get to the public library? to the genealogy society? to the historical society? the local cemetery? the appropriate courthouse? a museum in the area? to the local tourist traps? Plan to tell what you saw and whether it was wonderful‹well worth adding to our ³to do bucket list² or maybe not so much but another thing you experience that was worth the bucket list might be _______ Have you been unable to get there as yet? Then what would you like to see in particular? What county? What town? What tourist-type place? Where did you hear about it? Why do you think it would be interesting? Does it have anything to do with your family research? Or is it interesting for another reason? If you can bring picture[s] about it to share around the table, that would be good. The format will be informal discussion...with all taking turns at listening and tossing in their 2-cents worth as the morning goes. Hopefully someone will be able to make a list of places mentioned so that we can have a written list of what to see when next we go to Illinois. Kristy

    1. [GFO] Update on 1940 Census
    2. As of this morning six states are now available to search by index. They include .Delaware, Colorado, Kansas, Oregon, Virginia and New Hampshire. Fifteen other states are getting close, including Washington. The map on familysearch.org under the 1940 tab indicates which ones, but the by state status has been down for a couple of days. Indexers need to keep up the wonderful work that they are doing. Thank you to all of the dedicated volunteers who are making this possible. If you would like to join in the fun, it is not too late to get involved.

    1. [GFO] Writers' Forum Saturday at the GFO!!
    2. Hi Everyone, The GFO Writers' Forum will meet on Saturday, May 12th, from 11:45 until 1:45 p.m at the Genealogical Forum of Oregon. Everyone is welcome, whether you have participated before or not. This is your chance to get started writing or improve your writing, whether you are writing for yourself or for others. We learn about good writing techniques -- write and read what we write to each other. Without exception, everyone who has participated in this group over the last seven years writes better than they did when they started. This year we are working with Roy Peter Clark's Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer published by Little, Brown and Company in 2006. Each year we work with a book, but this particular book has been the most helpful of any book we worked with. Now we are working more specifically on language and at this meeting we will be working with Tool 30 Workshop: "To Generate Suspense, Use Internal Cliffhangers."" Feel free to bring you lunch, so you can stay to monthly meeting at 2 p.m! Hope to see you there!! 3. Hi Don, The first thing I did was check the website for BLM and looked for the DLCs for the surname of PARKER. The information I found at BLM led me to look for the Document number I found on the internet on the microfilm at GFO. From what Laurel says, there must be another drawer for the Washington DLCs which I'll look for the next time I'm at GFO. I have sent an email to the contact at BLM regarding my question, but haven't heard back yet. Thanks. 2. You may find land patents for ODLC on the BLM web site, but not the actual donation land claim applications. You do need to consult the microfilm for that. 3. Jan, This may not answer your question, but the GFO catalog shows we also hold Washington (Territory) donation land claim microfilms. Perhaps one of these will help. You will see both Olympia and Vancouver certificates. I'm researching Donation Land Claims and have run into something confusing to me. I'm not sure on what side of the Columbia River I should be looking for the paperwork on a couple DLCs. Based on the location of the two claims, my mind logically says I look at the Washington DLCs, even though the Authority says it is an Oregon-Donation Act. Is my thinking correct....do I look at Washington DLCs? The BLM website states the following regarding the Authority: September 27, 1850: Oregon-Donation Act (grant) (99 Stat. 496). Washington was a Territory in 1853 and a State in 1889. Using the Washington Atlas & Gazetteer, by DeLorme, I've been able to narrow down the two claim locations to the Camas, Washington area. Township 2N, Range 3E, Sections 23, 24, 25, 26. Date: January1866. Land Office: Olympia. Township 1N, Range 3E, Sections 11, 12, 13, 14. Date: August 1871. Land Office: Vancouver. (I have the names of the claim owners, Accession number and Document number for the above two claims.) The microfilm boxes at GFO only show land offices in Oregon. Has anyone seen the microfilm for the Washington DLCs at a repository in Vancouver, or maybe some place in Portland? If so, where? I don't want to have to drive a long distance to find and read the film. Searching the DLCs for Oregon has given me new information (names, dates and places), and I've been able to use other information in the claims as a needed source to verify other family information. 3. Jan - you might try www.glorecords.blm.gov for original donation claims and sometimes actual document images. Also, for OR and WA claims, go to www.blm.gov/or/ for additional historic info. You have all the info needed to initiate searches. - - Don ----- Original Message ----- From: "Laurel Smith" <bearpair@comcast.net> To: "'Jan Fenter'" <jfent@hevanet.com>; "'ORFORUM'" <ORFORUM@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 04, 2012 12:51 PM Subject: Re: [GFO] Help please with DLC confusion > Jan, > This may not answer your question, but the GFO catalog shows we also hold > Washington (Territory) donation land claim microfilms. 1. [GFO] 1940 Census Update
    2. Check out the familysearch.org 1940 Indexing page. Now orange states have easy access to the indexing of that state, fully searchable. These pages also include great information about the state. Incredible what familysearch is doing with this project. Can hardly wait for Oregon to turn orange. The 1940 Census is 24.85% indexed. At this rate it should be on track for completion sometime in late July. Everyone is amazed at the progress. Please encourage those you have contact with to do some indexing. For the Genealogical Council of we have over 8100 lines or 202 batches completed. We could use you on our team!
