    1. [GFO] Family Tree DNA Sale for Family Finder
    2. Emily Aulicino
    3. Greetings! Those of you who have tested the Family Finder test probably know of this sale, but in case anyone wishes to get this test, I have about 20 coupon codes to share with those who will purchase that test. The code can be used only one time so you will need one for each person you are having test. For those of you who attended the last GFO DNA Interest Group meeting, you know that testing more of your family members (cousins, etc.) can be very helpful. This is your opportunity to get that test at the lowest price it has ever been. The Family Finder test, with the coupon code, is $179, but is regularly $289. The best sale we have seen is $199. The Family Finder test gives the tester matches anywhere on a six generation pedigree chart (if the tester is number one on that chart). It does not replace the Y-DNA nor the mtDNA test, however. Both of those test STRs (Short Tandem Repeats) and the Family Finder Test (FF) tests SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms) so how it tests is apples an oranges. The FF is an autosomal test of thousands of markers in your body (around ½ million, actually). IF you or anyone you know wants to order this test, please email me and I’ll send you a code that will get you the $179 price. ALSO…if you or anyone you know wants a Y-DNA 37 or 67 marker test or an mtDNA test, I still have left over flyers for those and those in combination with the Family Finder Test. This is two different situations. To get this flyer, send me an SASE or make arrangements to pick it up at my home. SASE to: Emily Aulicino 7814 SE 36th Ave Portland OR 97202 Best wishes, Emily If you do not hear from me in a timely manner, just write again...I was buried in email. There are now 14 states available to search by index, 18 states at 100%, 5 states above 95%, 5 states between 94% and 50%, 16 states 50% to 20% and only 4 states under 20%. Have a little celebration and do some more indexing! Susan LeBlanc

    1. Re: [GFO] 1940 Census Update
    2. The index for the 1940 Census is online at familysearch.org. The link is a box for the 1940 Census either at the top or a little ways down the page. This should take you to a US map showing different colors of states, depending on their status. The orange states are available to search by the index and you must click on them to get to the correct page. Down below is a short list of states and their status and right below those you can click to see the status of all of the states. There is also an overall status for the indexing project. If you have any problem accessing this please let me know. Sue LeBlanc Can I find this index online ? I am confused.

    1. [GFO] 1940 Census Update
    2. Five more states of the 1940 Census are now searchable by the index: Alaska, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, and New Hampshire. Seven more states are at 99% or better. That makes twenty one states. Hope you are still having fun, I sure am. I have been thinking how to celebrate when this is totally complete. I think we should have an Oregon party! Sue LeBlanc

    2. Kristy Gravlin
    3. Passing on this note I just got about English research...to any who might profit from it. It came from the Wigtown Scotland list (a great! List for those working on Scotland, particularly in the SW corner.) Kristy of Illinois Interest ================================================================ Thanks to the Guild of One-Name Studies for this heads-up about "a new database from the English Place-Names Society which provides up to date interpretations of English place-names." "Key to English Place-names, the reference to the origins of place-names compiled by the Institute of Name-studies University o of Nottingham": kepn.nottingham.ac.uk Search results include a helpful map as well as a detailed etymology of the place name. 1. [GFO] 1940 Census Update
    2. Three more states are available to search by index in the 1940 Census at familysearch.org. New are Wyoming, Utah and Florida. Others include Oregon, Colorado, Kansas, Virginia, Delaware and Vermont. That means half of the states that are 100% indexed are available. The link moved to lower down on the page this week. Keep up the good work as indexers and arbitrators. Then take some time to search for your ancestors.

    1. [GFO] Open Studios at the Ford Building
    2. Mark your calendars for Friday, June 1, 5-7 pm, and join the fun at the Ford Building, 2505 SE 11th Ave. Over 50 tenants in the building will have their doors open for the public to see. There are lots of artists, photographers, book sellers, a tea shop, and other interesting people that occupy our building. And of course, the Ford Food & Drink will be open. Stu, the pickle man will have pickles to sell. Genealogical Forum of Oregon will also participate (we will be open until 9 pm). Join us in saying "hello" to our neighbors. Parking may be a problem, so carpool or use TriMet if you can. Division Street Bus #4 is 1/2 block away and the Milwaukie Bus #70 stops on 11th & Division and 12th & Division. We hope to see you there.

    1. [GFO] Large donation
    2. A donation of 40 boxes of research material and books has been offered to GFO if we can pick them up. The location is Monroe, OR which is near Corvallis. Is anyone with a truck interested in driving there to pick them up? We have not given a "yes or no" answer that we will take the donation, so this depends entirely on whether or not we have a volunteer. If interested, leave a message at the library - (503) 963-1932 for Sandi Whiteman, Library Director.

    2. Gwen Newborg
    3. May 26th meeting--British Group It's been suggested that we do a program "where people could talk about where their ancestors came from and we could have a map to pinpoint things. (The map has been acquired) Folks could bring photos with them, also baptism certificates, clothes, naturalization papers, etc. We'd like to keep the presentations brief so that everyone can participate. "Snacks of Our Ancestors" will be shared. Do you have a family dish or recipe to share? Some of us find things at the Scottish Country Shop across Powell Blvd. for different snacks like Shortbread cookies (packaged in Scotland). Join us at 1 p.m. back in the conference room area of our new library. 1. [GFO] FTDNA Sale Flyers available
    2. Emily Aulicino
    3. Greetings! I told those who attended the April 10th DNA Interest Group Mtg. that I would probably have flyers left over from my presentation in Tacoma. I do. The sale prices are: Y37 maker for $129 Y67 marker for $199 mtDNA Plus $159 mtDNA Full Sequence $249 Family Finder $199 I do not ever recall seeing Family Finder less than this. If you want the flyer, you need to send me an SASE and tell me how many you need. They do not honor these forever, but within a reasonable time. That could translate into a few weeks. You can always order a test and swap a person later. This sale is for NEW TESTERS. No upgrades. However, to clarify, I offer an example: if you are a male who has tested his Y, but now wants an mtDNA or FF test, you just put your kit number on the form and clearly explain that you wish to add this new test to your old test kit. If you need more sample, they will send you a new kit, but otherwise will use your old one. You DO NOT want more than one kit number for a person. It becomes a mess. The contrary is true, also..women who have tested their mtDNA and now want FF, can do the same. OR if they tested FF and now want mt. Think of it this way: If you have tested with FTDNA and are ordering a different type of test (not an upgrade) then you can use this flyer by putting your Kit number on it and asking them to add this test to that kit number. Do not order a test unless you are sure that is what you want and you understand how it can and cannot help your genealogy. Email me with any questions and include your phone as I may not have time to email, but would rather explain over the phone. When the flyers are gone, you will have to wait until I may have more and that could be Mid-October at the latest. Send your SASE to: Emily Aulicino 7814 SE 36th Ave Portland OR 97202 Best wishes, Emily If you do not hear from me in a timely manner, just write again...I was buried in email.
